What drives protein complex evolution? 🤔 We explored the evolution of homomers and found: 1) Enzyme oligomerisation is environment-dependent: monomers dominate in extracellular space, while homomers are common in the cytoplasm. 2) Evolution follows constructive neutral evolution: quaternary structure is gained easier than lost, suggesting a non-adaptive process. This highlights that protein quaternary structures may not be driven by intrinsic properties but rather by cellular context (e.g., crowding, homeostasis). #evolution #proteins #Biology
