Today marks 51 years of the all-volunteer force. The Nixon administration ended the draft in 1973, allowing Americans to serve in any military branch. The brave members of our diverse force voluntarily dedicate themselves to protecting and defending our nation.

Recently, I had the honor of raising the new Minnesota state flag at the Temple Army National Guard Readiness Center in Arlington, VA. The new flag depicts the North Star inside an abstract shape of Minnesota and a light blue banner representing the states more than 10,000 lakes.
Recently, the National Guard Bureau's Jr. Enlisted Club organized a food drive and then completed a “Ruck for Hunger” road march to a local food pantry in Arlington, Va.

Today, we recognized the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act of 1948. 76 years later, women are eligible for every job in the Army Guard and make up about 14% of the force.
We recognize women’s impact to national security, ultimately enhancing our war fighting capabilities.
With high ocean temperatures, climate scientists expect this year to be an active hurricane season.

Hours before his retirement date, Maj. Gen. William Zana, the National Guard’s director of Strategic Plans and Policy and International Affairs, returned to serve one last shift as a Sentinel at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Arlington National Cemetery.
One of my highest priorities is supporting our Army Guard Soldiers regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation.
