I went to a recycling bin to dump old clothes. heard the cries of a cat inside, so called local police to get it out. Police confirmed cat cries. 90 min later, Fire Brigade came to break open the bin. the “cat” turned out toy, battery-powered one, with very convincing meows! 😂🤦♂️
I just resigned as an Editor for
@Animals_MDPI
. Their disregard for research standards and integrity has left me with no choice. I have had lingering doubts about this journal for quite some time. Reviewers and Editors - PLEASE BE MORE CAREFUL!

Good morning from Hong Kong. I may be in hotel quarantine for two weeks but at least I wake to the sounds of Siamang gibbons calling from the nearby Zoological Gardens.
Could academics stop telling me that they are working all weekend? I don't need to know.I don't work 7 days & I will not, unless forced on rare occasions.I prefer LIFE and to live.I'll point you to the graves of my parents who both died young. If you don't agree, that is okay.
I've only just heard about this really inhumane research done in the name of science, 2022 - permanent separation of mother & baby macaques to study attachment - def not cute & cuddly as the photos below might suggest!

Years ago as a student, I could not afford to do this - or indeed anything similar because I had to buy food and pay rent. Somehow I survived 🤷♂️ Be careful about selecting PhD researchers based on these experiences because they are not available to many.
New data show that female attendance at virtual science and engineering meetings grew by as much as 253%, and gender queer scientist attendance jumped 700% - When scientific conferences went online, diversity and inclusion soared:
I see a sentient mouse, possibly highly disoriented, & maybe at maximum stress levels. What would you think if it was your dog or cat? 🔻

. I’m not a historian but I do trust the findings of the University of Salzburg.
“We knew that already” is a common public response to animal research results. 1. It’s almost always untrue. 2. Be mindful that that view is extremely discouraging for young scientists, after so much HARD work usually taking years! I’ve been around enough to not let it bother me.
next time you read a paper [e.g. animal behaviour, ecology, conservation] based on data collected in the Global South, please just check to see if any authors are from the Global South. It's improving, but will take time and more awareness.
It amazes me that some people need evidence for something like this - whips cause pain in horses! But well done to the researchers for getting it done & published.
when are journal Editors going to move on from this phrasing? "needs to be thoroughly proofread and edited by a native speaker of English." esp when 4/6 of the authors ARE native English speakers! 🙄
If anyone is doing

and related research, one of the primary reasons to disseminate findings publicly is to improve the lives of animals. This is basic, but seems to be forgotten by some in competitive academia.
Not too many years ago, a researcher who was about to start working with me was asked at a conference, “why are going to work with him? Don’t you know that he’s gay?” Don’t forget that hateful bigots still exist! but hopefully a small minority.

Today is June 3rd, and I have worked at home since Mar 13th. There have been many crap days and no very good ones - almost 3 months! Had some productive days, but quite a few were definitely not. Sometimes I wonder if the twitter over-achievers are human?
So, myself,

The research model in which long-term behaviour/ecology projects use well off Western students working for free in developing countries (or even paying to do the work) needs to be reconsidered.

I am growing VERY weary of seeing published papers in which animal well-being was compromised, but little or no evidence of animal ethics oversight or approvals for the research. Scientists, Editors & Journals must do better!
