My overwhelming belief at this point is that everything that Israel is doing at this point is focused around securing the necessary land to build the canal it has wanted since its very inception; a Suez competitor that the US believes is critical to its survival in the coming multipolar world as the US loses its geopolitical grip on Egypt. The brunt of what they've done in the modern era has been focused around the Med-Dead and/or Red-Dead Canals, officially called Mediterranean–Dead Sea Canal(MDSC) and Red Sea–Dead Sea Water Conveyance (RSDSWC/Two Seas Canal). Both ostensibly to serve the purpose of revitalizing the Dead Sea foremost by refilling it with a mix of sea and desalinated water, desalination plants as a water source for West Bank/Jordan, and hydroelectric dams. But realistically these projects all stem from original Israeli plans to have a competitor to the Suez and it seems pretty obvious that every other justification for them is incredibly secondary (the desalination and Dead Sea refilling might specifically aim towards controlling West Bank as well through control of their water supply). Notably using sea water to refill Dead Sea is like a surefire way to fuck both seas up ecologically but given their earlier plans involved nuking a path through the desert I guess you can call that improvement. The World Bank produced a massive number of exploratory reports on these canal projects, which can be accessed here: Oh, the "Ben Gurion canal" project appears to have been a psy-op, one that the Egyptian PM is at least pretending to have bought? It started around the time the Evergiven wedged itself in the Suez (not an accident, I don't think) and talked about a November announcement of a Ben Gurion canal that only ever appeared in Arabic sources and not any Hebrew ones. Or, at least no Hebrew sources that can be easily verified through google searches. I would guess it was put out there explicitly for the purpose of muddying the waters re: canal intrigue or by Egypt trying to strike back at Israel diplomatically. Most recently World Bank funded a three-way cooperation between Palestinian Authority, Israel, and Jordan to build the Red-Dead, which turned into a long and expensive boondoggle (may or may not have involved sabotage and what have you). The paper I've referred to here can be found via the following citation: Who cares though? Right? That project sank every time, it was a big boondoggle that'll never happen, even if it was a back-door to getting a Suez competitor that Egypt would be willing to go to war over, even if the single most powerful geopolitical bully on the entire planet wants it to happen, it's irrelevant to us now. Except... The crown jewel of the whole thing, the centerpiece that I was quite proud of discovering: (machine translated from Hebrew via google): "Israel, the United States and the Palestinian Authority announced today (Thursday) agreements that will allow the "Sea Canal" project to get underway. As part of the agreements, Israel will supply the Authority with water from desalination facilities on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, as demanded by the countries financing the project. The agreements on the project were announced at a press conference at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, with the participation of President Trump's envoy to the Middle East, Jason Greenblatt, the Minister of Regional Development Tzachi Hangabi and representatives of the Authority. According to the agreement, Israel will supply 33 million cubic meters per year according to a distribution of 23 to the territories of Judea and Samaria, and 10 to the Gaza Strip, at a price of 100 million shekels. The Revenue Minister said regarding the timetables that currently they are awaiting a decision on the tender for mining companies in Jordan and Israel. According to him, within a year the company will be selected, and a 220 km long pipeline will be laid in the Arabah. He added that there will be a joint manager for the Jordan Israel and Palestine project and that "five years from today the project will be operational". Hanegbi added that "you can learn from this agreement that when you focus on specific issues and don't let the past affect you, you can move forward. Another lesson is discretion - that's the only way to move forward. If I have to give Greenblatt advice on this matter, I tell him - stay under the media radar. That's how you'll succeed." . The director of the Palestinian Water Authority, Mazen Ganaim, said at the press conference that the agreement will bring about a significant improvement in the lives of Palestinians, and will have an impact on the entire water problem between Israel and the PA. According to the Palestinian representative, "This is a regional agreement that is not related to the peace process. Regarding it, one should first of all want to reach an agreement." In response to an Al Jazeera reporter's question as to why the Palestinians should pay for "their water", the representative replied that "the price we pay for water is minimal". The major part of the project will be built in Jordan, and will include a Red Sea water desalination facility in Aqaba, and the burial of an underground pipeline that will flow salty water from the facility to the Dead Sea. The funding for this comes from the International Bank and countries that contribute to it. The international bodies conditioned the financial aid to Jordan on the condition that the Palestinians would benefit from it. In this framework, Israel will transfer water to the Palestinian Authority, in exchange for funding the Sea Canal project. The work on the Sea Canal is expected to begin in the coming months. The announcement was made after a feverish American effort in recent days. This, after the disputes in the core issues have remained since the announcement of the project in 2015, promoted by the then minister Sylvan Shalom." Discretion indeed! The corroborating evidence is that Greenblatt can indeed be confirmed to have been at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem on the week of the 26th of April, confirmed by multiple sources, though very few other sources refer to what was actually discussed there. Oh, here's the stuff from Palestinian NGOs claiming that PA is betraying West Bank in agreeing to RSDSC, lays out the argument that it's a play at water control, which...well obviously that was employed against Gaza to horrifying current effect and the World Bank definitely invested a lot of money to make it that way:
