The Nigerian Embassy amazed me in Benin Republic on Friday. Two officials of the embassy got to the court before me and stood on both sides while I took questions from the special prosecutor at the Court for the Repression of Economic Offences and Terrorism in Porto-Novo. (1/8)
On Saturday, I left
@fijnigeria
after about four years.
Truly, good journalism can change the world immediately. I saw it when organisations upheld employee and customer rights, when agencies took their responsibilities more seriously, when erring police officers got punished,👇
They turned me into a star in court and guarded me through my subsequent stay in Benin Republic. H.E. Olukayode Olugbenga Aluko, the ambassador, also stayed back in his office till 10 pm to receive me. It was an overwhelming show of love.
How the police came about their terrorism charge against me beats reason, and I’m glad the court upheld my innocence. I feel so proud to have been spoken for by
@DavidHundeyin
,
@SavvyRinu
,
@PIDOMNIGERIA
,
@DanielRegha
and other young Nigerians whose voices the world listens to.
I express gratitude, hoping the same treatment is extended to every law-abiding Nigerian in need of such support. My boss,
@fisayosoyombo
, bade sleep farewell from the moment it was clear to him that I had been arrested.
It was Nasiru, a fellow inmate at the Parakou Central Police Station, who memorised my number and, upon regaining freedom, confirmed my arrest to my friend,
@MMiluyi
, and my boss. Thank you, Nasiru. People like you show the world that brotherhood can go beyond borders.
It was his efforts, those of the embassy, sustained media pressure, legal representation and advocacy efforts facilitated by the
@fijnigeria
and
@CPJAfrica
that culminated in my release from detention.
You might want to ask, ‘Why did he film national park officials while in a conversation with them?’ I had introduced myself as a journalist looking to speak with them. Two, the officers behaved in a manner several tourists and foreigners in my shoes would consider inappropriate.
I thank Rachida Houssou, the BBC Africa correspondent in Benin, my
@fijnigeria
family and every journalist who stood by and spoke for me. I also appreciate the
@CJIDAfrica
and other media groups who contributed to my release and well-being out of detention.
For the record, I am not a jihadist, and nothing incriminating was found on me. I was simply arrested for recording a conversation with officials of the Pandjari National Park while on the second leg of a Nigeria-Benin environmental investigation.
I'm glad to take up a new role as editor,
@fijnigeria
. All thanks to God, the management of FIJ, the editor-in-chief,
@fisayosoyombo
, and the entire team for believing in me.
I appreciate the efforts of H. E. Adebowale Adesina, Nigeria's ambassador to Togo,
@DapsyOly
, the publisher of
@PremiumTimesng
, and other prominent Nigerians who contributed to my freedom.
when the tables turned against cheaters and oppressors, and when victims smiled again after FIJ's stories.
I’m glad to have contributed to these stories in different capacities, especially as editor. 👇

This is why we call for a transition to clean energy.

Dear boss,
@fisayosoyombo
, working with you is one of life's beautiful gifts. Your dedication inspires me, and your selflessness makes me see life a little more differently. Sincerely, you are one of the greatest leaders in the world. I wish you a very happy birthday.
Happy birthday, Boss. Working by your side has been a privilege. Today, I join everyone at

In December 2021, I received a tip-off that ‘some people’ were selling babies.
After spending the following 19 months tracking them, I bought my own baby from them last month — for N2 million.
Find out who they are on

Nigeria produces uniforms for 300,000 corp members every year, and these eventually end up in landfills. How about making these clothes recyclable from the start, reducing cost, and cutting down emissions at the same time?

On the shrinkage of Lake Chad, I wrote this piece earlier this year. It used to be one of the largest lakes in the world and millions of Africans leaned on it. But now, it's almost gone! And we have insurgency and bloody clashes in replacement.

I, Damilola, take you to be my beloved.
To protect and care for you.
To be at your side in the face of government neglect.
To fight for you against illegal felling.
To love and cherish you always.
I promise you this from my heart, for all the days of my life.

Please, pay attention:
If all the worms on this planet right now die, the planet will cease in about 12 to 18 months.
Suppose all the insects die today, in about four years' time, all life will cease, including you and me.
But if all human beings die, the planet will flourish.

I beg to disagree with you on this, sir. A bill to ban generators is one that'll pitch us towards sustainable energy transition. There are already solar systems way cheaper than all these fossil-burning generators, and that's what the world needs now as climate change roars.
The Senator that sponsored the Bill to ban generators in Nigeria & send those that sell or use them to jail must be insane. He ought to be tied up, placed in a straight jacket, put in a strong sack filled with weights &dropped in the deepest & darkest part of the Atlantic ocean.
How each leader tackles the present parallel threat of a pandemic and

Everyone fighting for the earth is doing one of the very best things anyone can ever do, for the earth is really a fine place, and it's worth fighting for.
At this point, zero waste is one of the best things any manufacturer can target: If it can't decompose, it should be used and used again. That's the circular economy we are talking about.
