The African Burial Ground National Monument Indoor Visitor Center is open today: Monday, January 20, 2025, from 10 am until 4 pm. The Outdoor Memorial is closed due to icy conditions.

Thomas Downing (c. 1791-1866) opened an upscale oyster cellar, the Thomas Downing Oyster House, at 5 Broad Street in 1825. He was an abolitionist, and his restaurant was used as a stop on the Underground Railroad.

Winter operations have begun at Governors Island National Monument. Fort Jay courtyard will be closed for the winter. Castle Williams will be open for guided tours only. The tour schedule is Wednesday through Sunday at 10:30am, 12:00pm, 2:00pm, and 3:00pm.

The African Burial Ground National Monument Outdoor Memorial has been winterized, with the water turned off for the winter season. The outdoor memorial will still be open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00am until 4:00pm, weather permitting.

Due to the Championship Celebration parade for the NY Liberty, we are anticipating heavy traffic and delays in Lower Manhattan tomorrow, 10/24/24, starting at 6AM and running until at least 1PM. Broadway is expected to be closed from Reade St. south to Battery Park.
