February 1990 marked a massive turning point in South Africa’s history. On 2 February, former President FW de Klerk announced the ANC’s legalisation and Nelson Mandela’s upcoming release. Just nine days later, on 11 February, Mandela walked free from Victor Verster Prison near Paarl, after being incarcerated for 27 years. Also in February, five years earlier, Madiba’s daughter Zindzi delivered the struggle icon’s powerful rejection of a conditional release offer. And during this month back in 1977, prison guards conducted a dramatic raid on Mandela's Robben Island cell. Each of these February moments helped shape South Africa’s journey to freedom.
