Aave originally offered two types of interest rates: variable and stable. However, as of 2023, the stable rate has been fully deprecated. Let's take a closer look at what happened: First, what is the difference between them? The variable interest rate changes dynamically based on the pool's utilization ratio. It always checks how much of the pool's liquidity is being used. If it's a high utilization ratio, the rates spike ↗; if it's a low utilization ratio, the rates drop ↘. It's all about balancing supply and demand. The stable interest rate, however, despite its name, is not completely "fixed." It remains relatively stable but can adjust during extreme liquidity crunches and can be refinanced to a lower rate if the market improves. Think of it as a middle ground. 📝 Note that the interest rate choice applies only to borrowers, the supply rate is always variable. Because under certain circumstances, such as if all borrowers left the market, sustaining a fixed supply rate would be impossible. That’s why suppliers earn a share of all interest payments, whether borrowers choose stable or variable rates, minus platform fees. 🛑 However, the stable rate has been deprecated in Aave after a critical bug was discovered through the @immunefi bug bounty program. Although only certain assets were affected, the decision was made to fully retire the stable rate to simplify security reviews. All stable rate positions are being moved to variable. Some Aave forks, however, still offer stable rates.
