I mean who is running the science and technology in a democracy if the people don't know anything about it? if we are not able to ask sceptical questions to interrogate those who tells us something is true, to be skeptical of those in authority, then we are up for grabs for the next charlatan, political or religious who comes ambling along. It's a thing that Jefferson lay great stress on. It wasn't enough to, he said, to enshrine some rights in the Constitution and Bill of Rights - the people had to be educated, and they had to practice their scepticism and their education, otherwise we don't run the government, the government runs us" It's everyone's duty as a citizen to be sceptical and to question authority. And to make sure our schools are educating our children, not feeding them propaganda.

I'm just an engineer, so obviously not the sharpest tool in the box, but it seems to me that, in the US, government departments are opposed to a government department finding out what government departments are spending money on, including the government department that's responsible for the government's money.
