Chaco Canyon is one of the most inaccessible National Parks in the country. Although it is well-known, there is no easy way to get there & no amenities once you arrive. The closest town is 60 miles away. There’s a gas station on the main road, near where you turn off on Hwy 550.

Anyone in the mood for a happy story? My aunt was visiting last week. I took her on a short road trip to NW #NewMexico . The Bisti was the last stop on the first day. We got there around 5. At the turnoff there were a couple of dogs in the road. One was a puppy. They needed

September is the tarantula migration. Please don't hurt them. Most of the ones you see strolling about are males. These guys wait three years before going on the trek for a mate and it is a one-shot deal, their last adventure. One shot deal. Unfortunately, roads are a problem.

I was wandering on Upper Rio Penasco road (south of Cloudcroft). Rolled down the window to take a picture of a horse grazing. Spent 15 minutes chatting w/the horse, because it wouldn't get out of the car. Very friendly.

There's no good road to Chaco Canyon. It is an Indiana Jones adventure the moment you turn off Hwy 550. The jolting journey evolves from adecent dirt road to a face rattling off your skull washboard for a couple of miles. There's a large wash on the way. Impassable after storms.

Absurdity. Texas is New Mexico's #1 market for tourism. That won't change, because we have the closest mountains. Winter fun and summer heat reprieve. Practical considerations. Many of us don't have time for other folk's manufactured conflict and drama. Southwestern symbiosis.
