With no rain in sight and the soils now very dry it will be a rough 4 weeks for farmers, especially for some of the young ones who have never seen anything like this and have 2 amazing years. The emotional challenge will be huge across the State.

Dirty wheat in Aug - despite 118 g/ha Sakura + 2 L/ha trifluralin. So, with some left over trial IPU a farmer had a crack with a strip at 5 L/ha (left) or 3 L/ha (right) near Corrigin - I think you would agree 5 L has real salvage potential - kills big rye like nothing else can.

Atlantis (

) is great on brome grass and very handy on barley grass, rye, oats & phalaris. AHRI have shown that if u have not used an SU for 10-15 yrs that it will even do a good job on ryegrass. For $14.70/ha it is well worth considering.

I was told that Aquifer is not as good as SE14 and that this site hints at how good SE14 is. However, the devil is in the detail. It actually shows that in marginal moisture that bringing subsoil moisture up & then seeding improves

Chemical decomposition concerns - send a sample in and we will test it for free. We do it all day and virtually every day with our 3 chemists.
Take-away message is “keep it in the shade and sealed” esp for susceptible molecules.

An amazing season 2023 - problem was almost no rain from August onwards. Many 4 t/ha crops went 2 t/ha. Drought hurts and frost also complicates. Hopefully drought and frost tolerance in wheat is coming - this will be huge for NSW.

Very exciting result with 1.5 L/ha of glufosinate on mature ryegrass at York by

Great prices of fungicides - full rate of Tebuconazole (an SC) at $2.30/ha is hard to ignore with a UAN top up. We also have an AmistarExtra-TM equivalent as Azoxy Cypro, also an SC and a combo.

Are you considering buying chemicals? Just found a competitors price list who gives June and Dec terms. But their para is 26% dearer than ours and trifluralin/glyphosate is 10% dearer than ours. These terms are might be convenient they are actually very expensive 🤔

Recent update on the IPU - it really can take down mature ryegrass like perhaps no other in-crop wheat herbicide. Shame it never got registered in Australia - it is in NZ, Ireland & India. The path to market is feeling torturous.

Our radish research work with
#pyrasulfotole
either + or - crop safener. Seems NuFarm were right about it not being needed. The wheat has had 37.5 gai/ha of pyra. Then a low rate of 25 gai/ha sees fully dying susceptible radish vs nil. It’s a super cheap option ~$10/ha.

Newsflash - isoproturon is registered in NZ by 4F & has been safely used there for ~40 years. It is also registered in Ireland, India, China & more. An amazing molecule that never entered Australia as it was probably too good & detracted from profits of other lucrative molecules.

Yes Jake, I’ve had some useful scientific conversations on this & agree with your observation of the old rate. I smell a rat in the data. It is easy to bias trials & set then up to get the results of a bias. I published 12 papers myself - bias exists, I fought it.
Who says regular strength Zinc Phosphide mouse bait is ineffective. This is 12 hours post application.

A 4-way jar test - neat UAN at 50 L/ha plus 3 L/ha of
#Aquifer
plus 400 mL/ha of flutriafol (twice the top rate) plus 17% ZnCuSO4 at 2 L/ha. The mix was fine after 20 mins of sitting. But a 200 mL/ha rate of flutriafol would be better - the top label rate.

Aphids are building up now on the WA’s green growth of pastures and broadleaf crops. Aphids spread viruses & this hurts productivity. Using a selective aphicide, like pirimicarb is a smart strategy for vulnerable crops & pastures.

Hi Russell, the work I did with it in 1999 showed it made urea sown (drilled down) with canola seed safe - even at huge rates. I did 4 trials - all in the same yr but diff locations. I would encourage u to fiddle with this idea. The straight urea mostly killed canola as expected.

A sensible judgement - based on the evidence. This is unlike the USA rulings where they are based on sympathy and bias.
A Federal Court has handed down judgement in a class action against widely-used herbicide Roundup this afternoon.
Justice Michael Lee found there is not enough evidence to prove that an ingredient used in the popular weed killer causes cancer.

Well done Jusper for showing how hard you have to work to kill weeds and then in 3 weeks you will need to do it again as the tillage buries more weed seeds. If you had RR maize you could kill every weed in 5 ha in one day with 1 L/ha of glyphosate
