It boggles my mind that we can grow beef off of land like this without any carbon based inputs while suppressing wildfire concerns and do it sustainably every single year and there’s still people against it
In a moment of weakness last year, females in my family wanted a speckled park heifer and I have no power when my wife and daughters give me a certain look. Well now this heifer had a heifer who I’m sure will also have a heifer and I may never financially recover from this
Grain producer- I bought a new 80 foot drill today with variable rate, sectional control, flotation tires and all new technology. I’m excited
Rancher- I replaced a panel with a new swinging gate. I’m excited
I just put our 9 year old daughter to bed. She has a white board beside her bed with upcoming events on it
There are 2 events on her calendar
Easter
Semen testing
Just killing it as a ranching parent over here
Myth: rocks don’t make babies
Fact: Rocks do make babies. In fact, they can have several litters every year. Their growth rate is exceptional, with some of the young turning out much larger than their parents
Me- yay I’m going baling
Hydraulic hose- are you sure?
Me- yep, hay is ready
Hydraulic hose- you know, it is 4:45 pm on a Saturday?
Me- oh no
Hydraulic hose- ya...watch this
Me- (eye trembling, small tear falling from cheek)
Hydraulic hose- goodbye cruel world (barf everywhere)
Spent an hour listening to some Joe Diffie songs and a couple thoughts came to mind
1) Man that was a good era of country music
2) What the hell happened to country music
So the old google machine tells me lemon grass is a warm season plant that only grows in tropical climates
In other words, they are bringing in cheaper beef from Brazil, Uruguay and Australia and calling it better for the environment
cow farts & burps are no laughing matter. they release methane, contributing to climate change. that’s why we’re working to change our cows’ diet by adding lemongrass to reduce their emissions by approximately 33%. learn about our ongoing study:

For being such a barbaric savage that hates animals and only worries about profits, I’m betting the average Western Canadian rancher has fed a lot more wildlife this winter than PETA ever has
So here’s something we tried for the first time this spring. Sleep can be pretty important this time of year, so we built a couple of these boxes. If one of the night checkers have a newborn and it’s cold out, we flip the box over it. Come morning, mama is there and calf is warm!
I heard a cattle bawling north of the yard this morning so I went out to investigate
I can’t prove it, but it looks like these cows killed a beaver
If I was to pick the murderer, it was 73X in SE of 1, with her hooves
Farm equipment electrical error codes are a lot like marital arguments
I have no idea what caused it
I have no idea how I fixed it
I have no idea when it will happen again
It doesn’t matter if you have letters behind your name, the type of equipment you drive, variety of seed, soil type, breed of cattle, type of fertilization, fungicide applications or if you do 2 headlands or 4 when seeding
It’s whether you got rain or not
We bought this cow as a heifer calf in 2007 for $725
14 calves later, she will be worth a lot more than her purchase price
It’s been a tough go in the cattle business, so try to focus on the wins
When an Ag salesperson asks me “so you just run cows or do you do any grain farming”, what they really want to know is if it’s economically viable for them to keep talking to me
Via plane finder, here are the flights currently in the air right now. The average Boeing 747 burns about 1 gallon of fuel per second. There are approximately 200,000 flights on average/day now
But yes, it’s animal agriculture that’s the problem
Tough day sending some 2007 born females to town. They were born at a low point and now they’re getting sold at a low point. Along the way were some good years for them and us
Better days are ahead, but it’s tough letting go of cows that did so much for you
Producing a nutrient dense product, from the sun’s energy, on land that is unsustainable for long term grain production
Hell, even the fencer is solar powered
We care for our livestock, our environment and our families

Everybody meet Layne Mitchell Stuart. Born last night at 7 lbs 14 oz. Both him and Mom are doing great.
It’s been a few years since we last went through this and it really is the best thing in the world
We were going to grow mung beans here for
#beyondmeat
, but then those trees would have to go
Instead, we will grow around 35,000 lbs of beef here. Just like we have for 25 years on this pasture
The last 5 days have been some of the most challenging conditions I have dealt with. 28-30 inches of snow followed by 4 days of -30 to -40 windchill
Thankful for hearty animals, committed family and a never quit attitude
Forecast looks good now and a nap is on the menu
If you’re feeling frustrated, just think. Somewhere, a freshly graduated, 22 year old computer whiz is on the phone with a 61 year old rancher trying to get his calving camera working
In the past 24 hours, I’ve saved a bull that was laying uphill, saved a calf whose head was stuck in a gate, and now have 70 calves bawling because somebody shit in their watering bowl
But ya, they’re intelligent, sentient beings
I just wish it was a better story. Cow went to walk by me in an alleyway, she decided to close her eyes while doing it. I went to swing my stick to stop her and and slipped underneath her as she ran by. Our cows range from 1000 lbs to 1600 lbs. This cow weighs 1599 lbs…
You don’t know stress until you’ve calved out a 4-H heifer that your daughter is hoping to show as a cow calf
All good but I need a nap, and warm weather
Thank you to a grain farming neighbour who let us bale up some damaged crop. Those 24 bales will help stretch out the silage pile and will keep a few extra cows around to next spring. It may seem small to you but it’s huge on a year like this
