Flick’s style of attacking is already so aggressive. Initially a 3-2-5, which becomes 3-1-6 when the ball is in opposition half. Focus on stretching the defence with width then 3 or 4 central players for quick combinations. Switches to the width holders.

This is why you need to right player profile and decision makers when you build up. The best players know this scenario inside and out. Fans will often blame the coach or the GK but why do we not question the midfielder.

Roberto De Zerbi taught me that the spare player can be found where the initial line of pressure starts from. Take this moment for example. Romero passes to Vicario, Gordon presses Vicario, Vicario plays into Sarr, Sarr recycles to Romero. The move starts and ends with Romero.

Why doesn't Erik Ten Hag back the high press at Manchester United? We've seen the data. We've seen the footage. Defenders not backing the front 6 high press, which creates a gap for opponents to dribble towards a retreating back 4. Let me explain the reasons it happens. 🧵

I write about how teams have found a solution attacking from out to in with inverted players. 📝 Against high and mid-block pressing teams, provoking the fullback to step out, increasing the gaps between the defenders and attacking the space in behind. Short thread. 5 Tweets🧵

➡️ As ball goes to the RCM the #10 for Huddersfield jumps ➡️He is unable to play a ‘lift pass’ to the RB similar to clip I’ve shown below due to the LWB being in a distance close enough to intercept the pass ➡️ the LWB is more likely to intercept the pass as it’s a slower pass

➡️Rcm plays a pass to the #10 which is free due to the ST being in between the two opposition midfielders ➡️It could be argued that the #10 getting on the ball is inevitable as if the LCM for SW covers off #10 ➡️The #9 is able to receive the ball and lay it off to #10
