100% agree here. I still have some hope that there are people in many of these companies that understand the pragmatic as well as moral need for thinking about long term consequences of decisions. This was some of the thinking behind our work on risk innovation which, despite being aimed at startup success, never really got much traction:

After just over a week of using Deep Research this is a game changer for me -- the PhD dissertation I had it work on last week was revelatory, but more than this it's the ability of it to pull together thinking and insights I simply was not aware of. Using the term "artisanal intellectuals" increasingly to describe academics who aren't using AI!

I have never felt more certain that people making decisions about how AI and other technologies are developed need to read my books. And if that sounds like self promotion, tough -- the message is important!

Interesting take -- interested in your perspective on how we navigate unexpected, compounding and fast propagating downsides. Is that assumption that permissionless innovation will come up with solutions to adverse consequences faster than they propagate, or do we need to think more creatively about agile governance that helps avoid potential harms without stifling societal benefits?
