Thank you so much for your extraordinary outpouring of love on the Pacific Palisades fire. This fire has been a disruptive moment of reflection, action, and many life lessons which I feel compelled to share... 1) You are never invulnerable. As long as anything is out of your control (and so much is in life), accepting vulnerability as a consequence of being human is critical for everyone. As long as there is a corner, I promise you that there is some lack of clarity. Prada shoes, as fashionable as they are, burn as brightly as any value brand... their utility is fashion not invincibility. 2) The greatest collection we have is our collection of friends, our network of people that love us, think about us, root for us, need us, pray with us, believe in us, and the people who will miss us when we're gone. There is no group or thing more important than that network. A man or woman that sits on top of a castle with no friends, has no castle. 3) Local politicians. Politicians on the city, local level should be almost entirely apolitical. Their badge doesn't really matter that much. What matters is their ability to execute. Do you know how to manage people? Do you know how to manage basic services? Do you have vision? We need to measure mayors and council members pragmatic things like infrastructure improvement, crime, city growth, happiness measures, affordability OR affordability alternatives. Right now I believe the measure of electability in Los Angeles is the size of one's HEART... And, while that's nice, real leadership is a balance of BRAIN and HEART. Both. Heart doesn't beat without the brain. Brain doesn't work without a heart. I'll put it another way. A big heart with a bad plan is just as awful for your constituents. Hope, after all, is not a plan. 4) Insurance is a mandatory element of ownership. If you own something that will hurt you financially if it evaporates, you must have proper insurance. Even if you look around and see clues like 100 year old schools, other homes built in 1935, old parks... every clue establishing another landmark that you know means you're almost positively safe from a city-wide catastrophe. If you have to buy a home that's 10% less expensive to also afford comprehensive insurance, then buy the 10% less expensive home. This I beg of you. Please hear me out. Look at your coverages if your home is an important asset. 1) Loss of use, 2) Rebuild, 3) Grade of your insurer, 4) % of assets your insurer has in your local area just in case it goes up in flames. 10 years ago, we were underinsured. We were building a company. I didn't take the time to really scrutinize my coverage, and I didn't have the assets to cover a catastrophic loss of a home. That was the last thing on my mind. Playing defense. When you're ambitious, you're on offense. If I don't acknowledge that right now, I won't reach someone here who is playing offense, looking at my situation and saying - that's not relatable. You MUST play some defense if you own a house. If you rent a place, get proper renters insurance that covers your things and gives you proper opportunity to recover. On to us... We're fine. That beautiful outpouring of love was so well received and calibrating. The first week has been about communicating with insurance, establishing short and longer term housing, assessing the reality of things from a school, work, and other responsibilities standpoint. We have all of the important things sorted. Our lives are disrupted. Emotionally this was tough. It's tough to let go of so many memories. But, the damage on my family is limited to emotional and disruption. My older daughter Eden and I left at 3pm. We were some of the later people out. Eden snapped this photo from the backseat of my Jeep on the drive out. I'm saying this was a corner, and we didn't see the other side of it. And here's what was on the other side of it. Those Prada's wouldn't have helped me here. I love you all. We love you. We need for nothing. Heed the lessons above. And, may you never need insurance... but have it. Love, Jeremy
