One thing I've learned is that not only do some folks not pay attention, but they also forget/miss context. Combine those 2, and you have a pretty toxic group of people who think they are right, but they aren't, and advocate cutting off their noses to spite their faces.

Agree. As with most newly, well productized, advertised, or monetized things around novel technologies, the hype will almost always exceed the immediate reality and will overshadow the work that still needs to be done.
It's also worth noting, a lot of people saying "AI will replace everything" seem to under-appreciate the insane complexities, and inherent nondeterminism, of a massive set of problems in the world. Even something as simple as The Game of Life can't be accurately modeled today.
