Portrait of the artist on the release day of her new album "broken things." I've gotta go teach Joyce to a room full of lovely college seniors. But while I talk about moocows and Christmas dinners gone awry, you can pick up a copy of my album on bandcamp. 😀
I would add to this the increasing unlikelihood of eking out a living making music thanks to streaming services like Spotify and independent music culture's abandonment of underground music. Don't @ me. I know.
The suicide epidemic among artists, particularly musicians, is harrowing. It's almost as if being a creative person during late capitalism, a relentlessly hateful government, on a boiling planet is... bad.
Hang in there. Ask an artist if they're ok.
@PhDinProgress17
Gotta say: my spouse is my biggest supporter and could possibly give the "elevator talk" about my research better than I could. He also read my dissertation front to back several times--undoubtedly more than me OR any of my dissertation committee. I feel lucky.
To those of you in the academic community, especially early American literature, I am very sorry to inform you that Dr. Sarah Schuetze died this weekend.
I want to talk about her.
Happiest of birthdays to
@jimmyjacktoth
, born with a to-do list in his hand. He's my favorite person by a dozen country miles, and I think everyone who knows him well would say that the world is a brighter place because he's in it.
I know most of y'all are too young to have seen Juno, but there's this moment when Natalie Portman makes the Scrubs guy listen to her iPod (or was it vice versa?) and says "hey listen this record will change your life." And this was the record.

Married

on a Kentucky horse farm 11 years ago after a whirlwind courtship. The past year has thrown a lot at us, so I'm more grateful than ever to have him by my side. (He never believes me when I say so. 😛)
ON DYKER BEACH THERE STANDS A DOG, A MAN & his Selmer Varitone tenor saxophone. Fort Hamilton, the Verrazano Bridge, Belt Parkway & Staten Island are all behind him. His—our?—future would he heard on the 1968 Savoy Records lp, THE ELECTRIFYING SOUNDS OF THE PAUL JEFFREY QUINTET.
Re: What do you do at that point?
The answer: Whatever the hell I want.
Here's some unsolicited advice: Love your friends with kids; love your friends without kids. Don't make assumptions about their lives either way. Don't be a Shane Morris.
Millennials who are very cavalier about not having children are in for a shock when they enter their 40s & realize life is only half over. What do you do at that point? Keep trying to be sexy & have fun? I expect to see a lot of sadness & confusion about what to do at that point.
Experimental music twitter has taken a beating this semester, but my first year seminar students are into it; their favorite unit was the experimental music unit, with multiple shoutouts to Basinski and Lucier for changing the way they think about music.
From the abortion news to the school shooting news, the omicron variant news, and the shameless parading of lists of “music most listened to” on a platform that is killing the livelihood of working class musicians, today is an unbearably dark day on social media.
Just finished our JJT covers comp listen! My first time listening on speakers and
@jimmyjacktoth
's first time hearing everything. 2.5 hours! I hope you all get a chance to check it out; it's really special and honestly a great introduction to the strange world of James Toth.
Happiest of birthdays to my best friend,
@jimmyjacktoth
. He is usually touring on his birthday, and while I love having him home, the pandemic is the Twilight Zone twist. Here’s to touring again someday, and to celebrating the greatest person I know. 🥂
The most sad and desperate thing I’ve done in my adult life to date is pour the potato chip crumbs into a bowl of dip and eat it with a spoon, which I did just now. 🤦♀️
My sweetest shadow, Virgil, is 13 today! Blows my mind that if he were a person he’d be an adolescent by now. He’s the greatest; we feel lucky for every day he’s still with us.
Thrilled to announce that sound artist & composer amelia courthouse (Leah Toth,
@thescrvnr
) is returning w/ a dazzling new album of her singular “hymnambient” music, BROKEN THINGS, out 9/6 on limited edition vinyl & digital and available for preorder now.
Pretty wild & wonderful that this exists: Wilco in-store at Repeat the Beat in Royal Oak, MI, in June 1995. Just another example of music history that simply wouldn't exist if a taper hadn't been in attendance.
Y’all be sure to wish this guy a happy birthday today! All he wants are the house to himself (it’s his lucky day), pizza and cake (which is on me) and every release in the Tone Poets series (on you?). HBD
@jimmyjacktoth
!!! ❤️
My husband: Hotel rooms should never cost more than $50 per night; a men’s haircut should never cost more than $12. Am I married to an idealist or a time traveler?
This is *the thing* too many men do when a woman tweets about music: woman tweets something that shows her knowledge; man responds with a) the assumption that OP hasn't heard Bare Trees or whatever, and b) a command.
Nobody asked you, 💥ROB 🇺🇸💥. Take a hike.
Happy birthday to the chicest and also the most aloof and independent Capricorn I’ve ever known, my mom, who lurks here to make sure I’m not using “the f word.” She’s my favorite.
It was fun chatting with
@jasonpwoodbury
for
@aquadrunkard
about making my new album and about becoming church musicians as teenagers. (We both did!) Give us a listen below 👇👇👇👇👇👇
and support AD if you can. It's a great thing they've got going!

To be clear, I’m not talking about an *Animal Collective* book (which, whatever, that’s fine, too). I’m talking about a New Weird America book. That would have a section on AC perhaps, but also and definitely Charalambides.
Fact: if you want to drive alt music dudes up the wall, criticize the Velvet Underground ever so slightly. Probably drive some normie dudes crazy, too, tbh.
Honestly I love getting some asshole this worked up about the fact that I chose not to have kids. There’s a lot of us, my dude, and you’re not getting any of our votes. 😚 😀
JD Vance’s wife stated, “My husband did not intend to insult all childless women; his remarks were aimed only at those who choose to be childless, not at those who are trying and unable to have children.”
You know this is worse, right?
Please tell me Mrs. JDV that you know this.
Happy birthday to my sister-in-law Kara, a.k.a. "The Boo," regular star of the Staten Island Advance. She's so busy being serenaded by old-school pop idols (her favorite) we can barely get her on the phone.
My friend
@CraigCrowder
says “old dogs are sacred.” This one, always the “baby bear” to me and
@jimmyjacktoth
, is going on 12 and just started retired racehorse injections for his arthritis.
My mom, who got her first vaccine today (!!!), texted me just now: "Is Steely Dan still alive?" 🧡🧡🧡
I mean... Is Steely Dan still alive? Yes, Steely Dan is still alive!
My family just made two mistakes: 1) asking me “what’s the big deal about 2001: A Space Odyssey?” and 2) hanging around for the answer.
This is what you get for pushing “higher education” on me, Mom.
I've made the (possibly bad) decision to go ahead and teach Spinal Tap in my film class this semester. What are the chances 80+% of it will not land with the Zoomers? 😬
So long, Sarah. 🧡 Wherever you find yourself I hope there's vegan Indian food, puppies, opossum, and Morrissey and Spandau Ballet playing on repeat in the greatest 80s mixtape of all time.
One awful thing about loss is that even when people tell you how sorry they are, they seem to think you need to be *over it* three weeks later when, literally three months later all you can think about is how to make everything just stop for a minute.
We are v excited to announce our new release,
@thescrvnr
alter ego amelia courthouse's dreamy ambient album ruby glass! Available digitally & on limited edition cassette 11/22 & up for pre-order on Bandcamp now, where you can also preview the title track:
Shout out to all my Twitter followers who are quarantined with a "rogue Virgo": A Virgo who, prior to 7:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, asks their partner "What does your day look like?" and expects an answer in which all the events of the day are squared off in hourly increments.
My philosophy: more Jimmy Smith, not less. I’m too lazy to photograph the turntable rn, but organ jazz is good, and you should listen to it more often.😎 🤘
I'm about three or four months from being able to communicate with people exclusively through Leonard Cohen lyrics. I suspect I'll lose followers over this.
Hey, it’s worth creeping your friends out to show some gesture of love and appreciation. Get drunk and do it if you have trouble expressing emotion. Just see that you do it.
When you are a lady whose key interests are in music and/or film, it doesn't matter how old you are or how many degrees you have, there will always be a kind man--of literally any age, 14-90--to give unsolicited recommendations and tell you what to think.
#allthesegenerousmen
every picture of The Band is so funny: one really handsome guy, one handsome guy, one cool guy, the shiftiest looking person you've seen in your entire life, and a guy who looks like their weird uncle
This exquisite record is eight years old (!!!) but is never very far away from my turntable. I love it so—every note is perfect, and it takes on new resonance just every time I listen to it.
