Early New England #Christmas traditions: .Ha! Got you: There weren't any. "From 1659 to 1681, Christmas was banned in Boston by the Massachusetts Bay Colony to prevent 'disorders and superstition'". #VastEarlyAmerica.2/6.

Seems like an apposite time to recall and celebrate ratification of the Bill of Rights. This simple and powerful mid-century modern design by Herblock marked the 175th anniversary on a postage #stamp. How will we mark the 225th?. #philately #VastEarlyAmerica.2/4

I've always loved this 1838 colored print of the Erie Canal at Little Falls, from Bartlett's immensely popular American Scenery: the nocturnal scene so evocative of the encounter of culture with nature. #VastEarlyAmerica. 3/4

Apart from childhood memories of that song about the Erie Canal, most of us have no idea of the importance of canals in moving people & goods in the early nation. BTW that song was written only at the start of the 20th century. #VastEarlyAmerica.2/4.
