Soane is known for his harnessing of natural light, so it’s no surprise that some of the art he purchased reflects this fascination. Both Soane and Fuseli cut through darkness with shafts of light, whereas Soane and Turner both bathe their respective creations in a warm glow.

These paintings of India (Chunar and Fatehpur Sikri) by William Hodges (1794) hang in our Picture Room. Hodges presents romanticised versions of these landscapes he’d seen on his travels, constructing a version of India for the British audience.

‘Victory’, believed to be Soane’s final addition to the Museum, was restored to the Breakfast Room just before the anniversary of his death in January, thanks to the careful work of our conservation team.
