Musa, the owner of this brand, is a young hard working fellow who sources tomatoes from small farmers in northern Nigeria. Unlike my product(Tomato Jos), his product is pure 100% tomato and it only goes through one process: solar drying. Please patronize him! The product is good.
I’m in an Uber & I’m so impressed. My driver is SERIOUS about getting a job. He keeps copies of his CV in his glove compartment. He’s got good work experience, he’s buying a car on layaway, he’s treating the ride like a low-key interview & I’m here for it. Someone pls employ him!
Ok. I’m going to share my best explanation as to why tomato prices are high. I’m going to do it as definitively and comprehensively as I can, so that next year when they’re high in June I can point everyone back to this thread.
Just got an $800,000 quote for a solar-powered system to run our irrigation pump.
Alternatively, we can buy a $35,000 diesel engine and spend $15,000 per year on diesel & maintenance.
It will take 51 years for the solar to “pay for itself.”
How is solar cost effective?
Welcome new followers! I’m Mira. Born in Boston, USA to an Indian dad & a Finnish mom. Been living in Nigeria since 2008 except for 2yrs when I got my MBA at

. I try to stay positive & drama free. ❤️
I’ve had a lot of strange experiences living in Nigeria for the past 12 years, but this is a new one! Currently flying from Lagos to Kaduna with a plane full of soldiers… 😳
If northern 🇳🇬 were its own country, it would have a population on par with Germany, a GDP per capita on par with Malawi, state & economic stability on par with Syria, and education levels on par with Somalia. Please, stop congratulating yourselves and help us out of this mess.
Congratulations to Everyone! All who endured harassment online & offline, because of Buhari. The footsoldiers & volunteers of the campaign, young and old, who made calls & canvassed, who hit the streets with the

message. The Presidential Campaign Council. Congrats!!!
Yesterday I presented a carton of
@TeamTomatoJos
tomato mix to the Honorable Minister of States for Trade and Investment. I’m so excited to finally be in the market!!
TJ on the road! Today we are meeting the Emir of Zazzau to introduce him to
@TeamTomatoJos
and thank him for allowing us to work in his kingdom with his constituents. Everyone on my team keeps saying they can’t recognize me 🙄🙄 I guess I should wear makeup more often
I’m doing some calcs for a potential investor and I had to look up our tomato output over the years and it made me proud of how far we’ve come.
2015: 9 MT
2016: 26 MT
2017: 73 MT
2018: 119 MT
2019: 500 MT
It doesn’t always feel like we’re making progress but we are, somehow...
Yesterday,
@TeamTomatoJos
donated tomatoes to our traditional ruler, the Emir of Zaria, so that the
@Zazzau_Emirate
can provide for the needy as we head into Ramadan. We are grateful for our strong relationship with the community! Barka da azumi 🙏🏾
Starting up a factory is never easy, no matter how many times you’ve done it before… But despite all the challenges, I just love seeing
@TeamTomatoJos
sachets come off the line and knowing that we have the freshest product in the market!

I don’t like to post my location in real time but DON’T pass through Suleja right now if you can avoid it. Tons of boys in the street “protesting” ie trying to tear tarpaulins off trucks that are moving goods so they can steal what is inside.
Wrote this note to myself in October 2013, about a week after my fiancé broke up with me - right around the time I started thinking seriously about finally starting TJ. Had it on my bathroom mirror as a daily reminder. My mom saved it for me in the cabinet 💖
It all sounds so tidy and successful when a talented writer captures my journey, but believe me it's a HUUUGE struggle. I struggled, in 2014, I'm struggling today, and I'll probably still be struggling in 2025. Thank you
@MadeItInAfrica
for publishing this! 😅
I’m back in Nigeria after a 2-week rafting trip in the Grand Canyon that literally changed my life. So why was this trip so special, and what does it mean for me now?
First of all, I was completely offline for 2 full weeks. No phone, no internet, not even a watch.
A small piece of good news to counter all the bad: we think our partner maize farmers might reach yields of 10 MT per hectare this season! Each of the “maize cages” pictured holds the harvest of one farmer, from the 0.25 hectares that he or she cultivated.
At this time of year, tomatoes typically sell between N3,000 and N6,000 per 60kg basket at the big markets in Northern Nigeria.
The price today is N22,000.
The more followers I get, the less I feel like I can post what I’m really thinking… does anyone else feel this way? It’s like a weird form of self censorship.
I will say, this is the most orderly queue I have ever experienced when boarding a flight in 🇳🇬. All of the soldiers queued up in a long single file column and us civilians were too scared to try and jump the line or conduct any nonsense. We all meekly filed in behind them.
One of my friends who farms rice in Adamawa just told me that his fields yielded 8 MT/Ha this season!!! 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
This friend had never farmed before 2015. He faced SO many challenges and defeats, but he kept going and now the chickens have come home to roost.
WE MOVE!
I went online at 4pm. Bought a ticket for the 6pm train from KD to Abuja. Payment went through, ticket was issued and I printed it. Drove to Rigasa and entered at 5-ish as the arriving passengers disembarked. Stood in line. Showed my ticket, boarded the train!
Amazing!! 🙌🏽💫🎉
Here are some recent pictures of the maize and soy that our partner farmers are currently growing.
@teamtomatojos
has been supporting smallholder farmers to feed the nation since 2014!
My amazing aunts! These women, the younger twin sisters of my grandma, both became doctors at an age when medicine in India was dominated by men. They have traveled the world, written papers, & Mahtab Aunty (right) is a direct inspiration for Tomato Jos through her charity work.
Tomatoes are SEASONAL.
All over the world, open-field tomatoes are seasonal. They need cool nights, hot days, and a dry climate.
In Nigeria during the rainy season, it is hard to grow open-field tomatoes.
EVERY YEAR in June, the prices go up. Every year guys.
Affi baby get ready because next year our mango trees will be producing in earnest 🥭 🥭

It looks like nothing is changed but over half the welding is complete and cables have been terminated at all but two of the major assets. If you know, you know... 😏
Broke: never getting grants even though your applications are dope
Woke: realizing that the grantors already have specific people/orgs in mind before they even drop a request for applications
Master stroke: being one of those orgs that the grantors have in mind
I know a few ppl raising money for their respective companies and I'm incensed by the stories they tell me. Investors who want double their money if additional funds are raised sooner (sooner!) than the target, investors who don't want funds to be used to replay director loans...
I just saw this ad on TV: a company is offering 40% returns to investors in 6 months. The alleged opportunity is rice. They want to work with 700 groups of 250 farmers on 2 hectares each, starting in Kebbi State. That’s 3,500 square km of land, ie 10% of Kebbi’s land mass...
@borie_nla
If Nigeria were a serious country, they’d have the state ADPs go out and measure the acreage of each major crop planted. USDA does this for corn, soy, wheat, and other crops and it’s publicly available info.
But we all know Nigeria is allergic to collecting & sharing real data.
Tried to take a couple of stealth photos coming off the flight - please excuse the weird angles. They are all gathering outside while the rest of us have come to the luggage area.
Tomato Jos is now available in multiple super markets!! Get yours today 😋

Here’s what has happened so far.
My partner and I are supposed to fly to the US. We book a
@Delta
flight from Lagos to Boston via Atlanta, travel agent.
It’s Sunday. We get to the airport at 3:30pm. The flight is scheduled to depart at 10:30pm.
32 out of 35 hectares of maize have been planted! The heavy rains have made it hard to use the tractor effectively but we believe we are on track to finish planting our fields by the end of the month.

A) There’s a standard price 2 pay for MoPol services. We paid it.
B) My company is fully tax compliant. If you believe that taxes go anywhere other than into politicians’ pockets, the 50 ppl I employ probably contribute more taxes than u.
C) I live in KD, ain’t taking no chances.
As long as you realise that the Nigerian people are subsidising your keeping police officers as private security. I do hope white people in Nigeria who get this deal realise the cost on the Nigerian people.
When people ask me if they can invest in farmers through TJ, I try to explain that it's not easy to deliver returns like this. We're only now getting to the point where we can make farmers productive enough to walk away with a 20% profit after paying back their loans.

First, the good news: the war in Ukraine has negatively impacted many nations/regions, but Sub-Saharan Africa is actually doing BETTER than predicted so far this year.
IF you as my wife meet my side chick in a mall and you choose to disrespect me by making a show of it, if the babe respect's me and keeps her calm. I am upgrading her to wife, end of story.....
Gotta take the bad with the good!

Bottom right: sachet production

Good evening folks! I want to tell y’all a story. It is full of first times. My first trip to rural, northern Nigeria. My first real encounter with a person living with HIV. My first (and only) experience with burukutu. And possibly, the first seed of TJ sprouting in my head.
Have you ever wondered what would happen if you could give 1,000 small farmers the opportunity to cultivate maize on well prepared land, with all the inputs and support that they need to succeed?
Power wahala in this country go kee me. To run a “small-scale” (ie tiny for the world but big for Nigeria) processing facility I will need 4,800 liters of diesel for my boilers to produce steam, and 3,360 liters of diesel for electricity. PER DAY. 💀😭
Just spent a little time with Salome from our agronomy team, learning about all the different trials that are ongoing in our farm. Wow! It’s a lot.
Here are some soybean trials. We are conducting both variety and protocols trials, with multiple replications for every trial.

I hesitated to even tweet about the experience but, well, if it was supposed to be a secret they would have bought out the whole plane and boarded through another area, right? I don’t think I’m blowing the lid off anything here. 😬
I want to snap a picture but years of putting my electric devices away at check points has conditioned me to not even attempt it. (Even though the soldier sitting in the row in front of me is doing video selfie…)
