I do think that new vtubers should ABSOLUTELY start with simple / cheaper models and work their way up.
But I also think that Vtubing is a really weird, very specific ecosystem of freelancing because of the nature of the medium. ⤵️

Mouth shapes are SO important to portraying the character/personality of a model. They're one of my fav things to rig!
You absolutely can have the best of both worlds if you're intentional with your mouth forms and make sure everything transitions smoothly!
my Very Hot Vtuber Take is that it's really a shame that unique mouth shapes have been ritually sacrificed in the past few years for the sake of more accurate mouth tracking

If I need a mask in Live2D that doesn't exist I just grab a random body piece that's roughly the right shape and rework it as needed.
For example one of my models has giant, invisible thumbs floating all over her body. :)
