Potentially unpopular opinion but I feel the 'women are made of soft shapes and men are made of hard edges' stuff that many beginner art guides throw at you, has not only pushed a 'women are only soft and delicate' narrative, but convinced many artists they can't draw men
Learned recently about the tool in CSP that lets you edit your line width even on non-vector lines, and as someone who changes their brush size 2000 times a minute and then regrets it, it's a lifesaver
Twice recently I've seen artists I follow give up posting OC art because no one is paying attention to it and I'm here to tell you to SUPPORT CREATORS' OCS AND ORIGINAL PROJECTS 📢
If they draw fanart, don't JUST support their fanart!! Encourage them in everything they do!!!
Mini Paypal guide for artists taking commissions:
1. Always use invoices
2. Never ask your customers to pay via the 'friends and family' option
3. Do not ask the customer to pay the Paypal fee separately. This is against ToS. Build the fee into your pricing instead
I've seen a few people saying they're reluctant to RT artists' work right now because it'll only let them QRT and that's not true! Just leave the box that says 'add a comment' blank and it'll RT as normal. It's very frustrating that twitter is making this confusing
Genuine question. How do you just sit down and watch a TV show or play a game for hours without feeling an intense sense of self-loathing because you're not actively producing something?
It sounds dramatic but I just can't do it
Things I've learnt that I wish I'd known as a little babby artist:
- Never stop trying new things
- The perfect drawing doesn't exist, sometimes 'good enough' is good enough
- ✨ t h u m b n a i l s✨
- Fake it til you make it, self-deprecation helps no one
(cont.)
To the idiots out there saying "it's your fault if your art is stolen, just watermark it" - someone once cropped out 80% of one of my drawings to get rid of a watermark.
Stop putting blame on the artist, get off your ass and create your own content. Alternately, sit on a cactus
I used to get people complaining that my women were too masculine and my men were too feminine but buff women exist. Soft and slender men exist. Your characters all across the gender spectrum can look however you want. New artists, don't feel trapped by these apparent 'rules'.
I see a lot of artists who only draw women and say they don't know how to draw men because their bodies are difficult to get the hang of or it doesn't work with their 'soft' style, and I frequently wonder if it comes back to this.
I've seen a lot of artists saying they don't know what to buy to cut stickers now because of this, so just dropping a recommendation for the Silhouette - no additional fees, mine is 9 years old and I'm still using the original blade. Not sponsored, I just think it's neat
If you only WANT to draw women, fine, that's valid, I know some people choose not to draw men, but the 'MEN ARE MADE OF DORITO SHAPES AND HARD ANGLES' advice could easily be off-putting to people whose lines aren't a spiky mess like mine
Since this seems to be a hot topic right, now here's a list of places to get art of your D&D/TTRPG characters without using other artists' work/OCs without permission!
Feel free to add to this, it's definitely not exhaustive
This is absolutely nuts. I try to avoid art drama on main but reminder to everyone NOT to support BluePotionCo. She's already preemptively blocked everyone on the UK convention scene, and now this. Her products are created with art traced from official products and other artists.

When a man ran in and shoved a load of yankee candles in his coat, then another man ran in, yelled "STOP, I'M AN UNDERCOVER POLICE OFFICER," wrestled him and shoved the candles in his own coat before they both ran back out
- Failing at a piece is better than never starting it
- Mistakes mean you tried something different
- Make art for the people who want to be here to see it, don't chase those who won't care anyway
- REFERENCES ARE SO IMPORTANT
- Compare yourself only to the artist you used to be
Us, several years ago: hey do you want to play a casual little D&D game? We won't take it too seriously
Us now: so anyway we now have a marker of our part in the campaign on us for the rest of our lives
Level 10 Ez update! Plus bonus stormy version 🌩️✨ He's finally getting more comfortable using his magic and throwing around the big spells. I love this boy so much

A once-benevolent monarch twisted to corruption, wiped from history by those who once loved him, awakens centuries after his death in an unmarked grave. The Forgotten King is returned to repent.
Says the app that doesn't allow working links on posts, won't give you swipe-up links in stories til you hit 10k which is a distant dream for many small businesses, and doesn't show your posts to most of your followers 🙃
Kinda related to my last tweet but I've seen a few people say they're now afraid of doing OC comms which is a real shame. I'm not an authority but as someone who's done hundreds of OC comms - the vast majority of clients are incredibly understanding so please don't worry!
My table is THANCRED APPROVED 🎉
Shoutout to Peter Bramhill who appeared at my table while I was away and asked my friends if he could get behind it to take a picture
It will never not be funny that I play a half-orc who speaks with two accents and gained his magic from being thrown off a ship, but I've never had a single comparison to Fjord
Yet Vespertine is 'basically Jester' or 'basically Molly' because he is *checks notes* a tiefling
@ciaraturnerart
Also a woman who demanded a refund on a greeting card she had already sent because it didn't say 'happy birthday' in and she had to write it herself, someone who called my manager an evil bastard because he said carrier bags were 5p, and someone who wanted a refund on said 5p bag
The Blooming Grove 🌱🌼🍄
Anyone for dead people tea? 🍵 I've been wanting to draw Caduceus since he made his first appearance, and 1000 years later I finally got round to it! I adore this soft pink cow man💜

The amount of people I've seen countering artists asking people not to steal their OCs with "And yet you draw fanart. Curious!" is actually astounding. You're either being intentionally obtuse or just have so little clue that you shouldn't get involved in the conversation
When I first designed Ez this was the idea I had in mind because I was going to go draconic origin sorcerer, then I changed my mind to storm sorcerer. I'm glad I chose storm but wanted to doodle up what he might have looked like!

Everyone go home I have officially the worst comment to ever come out of Art YouTube in my inbox
Nothing will ever beat Adobe's most desperate bootlicker
@schnetzle_
I got a comment once that said "oh I thought your character was a woman because he has eyelashes" 🙃 I wonder if they had ever seen a real person
@KenMcFarlane
SAME I feel so much frustration about this. Same with a post I saw recently that said "I'm making art for a dead fandom because the game came out last year" and... I don't get the hurry to move onto something else? I feel very old
Finished the doodle of Jester I started after the first episode of the new campaign! Hence her horns are slightly wrong. Sorry!

A lot of this is general knowledge but these in particular are all things I struggled terribly with until I received some great advice from friends/other artists over the last couple of years. I think my attitude towards my art is healthier now and I feel much happier for it! 💖
@Misfit_Playland
I don't envy new artists starting out at all. I've already seen people say they feel there is no point in them drawing any more, let alone trying to find work. As much as I'm a person fuelled by spite, it's heartbreaking to see
Just going to say this: take this from someone who's been posting their art on social media for 15 years - you and your followers don't owe each other anything unless money has changed hands. You don't owe them content, they don't owe you interactions
May everyone working retail today be blessed with a shift that goes quickly, customers who know how to behave and a store that doesn't look like it's been hit by a tornado
If you're shopping today, BE NICE or I'll come and have a stern word with you 🔥
🔸 Heroforge:
Customise a 3D image of your character and, if you like it, pay for it to be 3D printed as an actual mini. They have colour options now too

Big chunky eyebrows and like... extra fluff between the brows?? I TRY to draw thinner more well-behaved eyebrows but every time I fall victim to my own weakness
Here's the Patreon monthly illustration for February! My patrons voted for me to draw Aaravos who is ABSOLUTELY MY AESTHETIC ✨🌙 The shattered mirror effect was difficult but I'm happy with the result!

I've seen a few posts floating around from artists avoiding doing one or all of these things and you're at risk of losing your accounts, being taken advantage of, or just making the transaction more confusing than it needs to be
If you use invoices, you and the customer know exactly what's being paid and what they're receiving, there is an option to add a tip without the customer potentially feeling awkward and having to ask if you accept tips, and it's much easier to keep track of come tax season
I just handed in my notice and am now officially a fulltime artist, and not that I'm petty or anything but today is dedicated to the teacher at my college who said no one would ever buy my cheap and tacky art
Big (and scary, and exciting) news. I'm quitting my retail job and going fulltime freelance!! 🎉🎉🎉
I've worked in retail for 10 years and I'm incredibly nervous to leave, but so excited for the opportunity to dedicate my time fully to my art
As for the 'friends and family' option, that's fee-free because it's for people you know and trust ONLY. There is no seller protection. And if Paypal becomes suspicious because you receive a lot of payments that way, they could close your account
A birthday gift for

of our illustrious captain Ego, a kind and generous soul who can do no wrong 🏴☠️
I hope you have an amazing day Lio!! 🎉

I'm currently playing 3 characters in one of my campaigns, and one of them is Vespertine, now in his 40s. So good to have this fussy, skittish, fireball-slinging boy back 🔥
Wanted to share a really useful resource for those using CSP who have clippy points to spare - there's a 3D planar head model on the asset store (ID 1978967), which you can pop on your canvas and set up a light source on for easy shading reference!
Still kind of a WIP because I'll be using this for a couple things, BUT the
#BeyondSkeletonsDnD
gang were talking outfits for fancy events and I may have summoned Ez's ultimate form 🌟

Thought I'd add this, since setting up invoices is the thing I see people putting off the most: here's mine! Very basic, once I set it up I just use the same template for everything.
(Disclaimer this is not the actual price of my fullbody comms, I just threw a number in)
@JazzSeeks
Yes, definitely! I wrote this thread quickly and didn't expect it to get the reach it did, but there are definitely a lot of factors here that make the kind of simplistic breakdown of 'women soft shapes, men hard shapes' a problem
'Preordered Stonehouse's Anatomy and trying to get a refund' gang rise up 💀💀💀
Anyway if anyone wants a rec for anatomy guides I've found the Morpho series by Michel Lauricella REALLY helpful, these are pretty much constantly on my desk and I plan to collect the rest
The last one - yeah, fees suck, but it's against ToS to ask a customer to pay a surcharge for paying by Paypal. Just build that fee in your pricing across the board. Maybe a little daunting but that's the best way to do it
And of course:
🔸 Commission artists!!
The best way to get art of your character made specifically for you, and to support artists, is to commission them. Some artists (like myself 👀) can also design a character from scratch if you don't know what they look like yet
⭐ OC SHARE THREAD ⭐
OCs are GREAT!! Post your favourite OC here, or maybe just one you've been working on a lot lately, and tell me a little about them!
If you can, don't just drop an OC and run - check out each others' work 💜✨
Level 1 - level 10 🌩️✨
Never played a character to this level before so it's fun to see comparisons. I'm excited to hopefully be able to do the same with my other characters!

Lately I've seen some people try to justify stealing art/demanding lower prices by saying "not all of us are lucky enough to be born able to draw." Yes, the truth is out, I was born holding a cintiq, because it was my destiny. It was an unfortunate experience for all involved 😩
Today is the 1 year anniversary of our campaign

It's been a WILD ride full of everything from heartbreaking angst to the most ridiculous antics, and I've loved every moment so far with the bunch of absolute dinguses that is our pirate gang 💖
