Taiwan plans to cull up to 120,000 green iguanas ๐ŸฆŽ๐Ÿ’”Read PETA's full statement below: These green iguanas are victims of the pet trade, which steals animals from their native homes or breeds them in filthy mills, sells them off like cheap toys, and does nothing to stop buyers from dumping them on the street to fend for themselves. These animals may not be as familiar as the dogs and cats who share many of our homes, but they feel pain and fear just as much and are just as deserving of humane population control. PETA reminds the public that animals are someone, not something to get rid of. PETA urges authorities to prioritize non-lethal strategies, and if culling is deemed necessary, to ensure that it is done according to established guidelines to minimize suffering.

All of us at PETA are heartbroken. Barbie was one of the first and biggest stars to lend her support to PETA. She used her platform on social media to expose the cruelty of the fur industry, educating millions of people about how animals are confined to tiny cages, trapped in painful steel-jaw traps, and killed by electrocution or gassing. She spoke up countless times for animals, directly urging brands to stop selling fur. She also used her artistic skills to decorate a bear-shaped card to draw attention to how bears in circuses are hung by their necks and forced to stand on two legs.

We appreciate the efforts of the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) in addressing these issues. However, we know from experience that most abuse goes unpunished for either lack of animal protection laws, politics or an unwillingness to hold major industries accountable. Regardless of any convictions that may or may not follow, PETAโ€™s recent investigationโ€”and our documentation of over 150 shearing sheds worldwideโ€”clearly shows that beating, punching, kicking, stomping, and cutting are standard practices in the wool industry. This is true not just in New Zealand but globally. Read PETA's full statement:

The recent tragic death of a tourist who was bathing elephants at a tourist attraction in Koh Yao Yai, Thailand, is a stark reminder of the inherent cruelty and danger associated with keeping wild animals in captivity. Elephants are highly intelligent, sensitive beings who suffer immensely in unnatural environments where they are forced to interact with humans, often resulting in unpredictable and dangerous behaviors.
