One of the most important concepts we try to teach in our courses is that issues with one body part or pattern are often not isolated to that body part or pattern.

Our lunge with extension test help us evaluate how well an athlete extends from the hip and thoracic spine. If a thrower doesn’t pass the test, we consider it to be a significant red flag.

Neck mobility is critical in golf, but WHERE we achieve that mobility from in the cervical spine is equally important. The lower cervical spine is not designed to rotate as freely as the upper cervical spine. Therefore, it’s critical that the segments above and below it move well. If we allow the upper cervical or thoracic spine to lose mobility (“become stable”), we often seek excessive mobility from the lower cervical spine, increasing the likelihood of disc herniations.

➡️ to 🔄 Notice how at the end of the First Move (first 3-4” of hands moving forward) the pelvis doesn’t move closer to the pitcher. Evidence of a firm front side. Shifting, not Drifting. Requires lower body strength, in addition to IR mobility

Creating Space A characteristic of elite hitters is the ability to create space for their arms to swing down the line of the pitch. Key physical capabilities: ✅ Hip, spine & ankle strength ✅ Lower body strength ✅ Core control 🎥: @JoshCathcart8

Evaluating the movement capabilities of your pitchers and hitters creates more informed recommendations related to treatment, training and technique. Assess, don’t guess.

Why we rely on assessments. Improve mobility where it’s needed, when it’s needed. More ROM isn’t always better, especially with the shoulder. For example, pitchers working on shoulder ER to improve layback should first ask: “is shoulder ER my limitation?” 🗣️: @ZachDechant

The ability to keep from “losing space” (allowing the pelvis to move closer to the plate) is not only key for a hitter to maximize bat to ball skills and adjustability, but also bat speed.

Congrats to our friends at the @Dodgers on the World Series title, including hitting coach Robert Van Scoyoc. Here he is working with Dr. Rose during the MLB All-Star break on generating ground reaction forces earlier in the swing and creating a feeling of the “legs driving the arms.” This is one of the most common cues we give amateurs after evaluating their force plate data. When compared to the best golfers in the world, most amateurs we see are generating force too late in the downswing. It was a huge unlock for Robert as he was - impressively - able to immediately implement it into his swing to improve club path, speed and help clear his lead hip.
