Congratulations to
@AlboMP
and the Labor team! Australia has chosen change and progress. I look forward to seeing vitally needed changes for equity, diversity and inclusion.
.
@jacindaardern
showed the world a new style of leadership by deciding to foreground kindness and empathy. Her example has been a shining light to many, especially women. I congratulate her on all she has achieved to date and wish her well in this next phase of her life.
Congratulations to
@jacindaardern
and
@NZlabour
. You have led NZ through difficult times, with an understanding of the special power of kindness. Your leadership will continue to inspire people around the world, especially women.
My sincere condolences to
@ScottMorrisonMP
on the death of his father John. Losing your dad is always hard, and even more so when you are serving as PM. My thoughts are with him and his family.
Congratulations to
@ScottMorrisonMP
- always an honour to serve. To the 29th PM, from the 27th PM,
@TurnbullMalcolm
there is a life after. Best wishes for the days to come.
Thanks to all at
#March4Justice
today for raising your voices against misogyny & violence against women. I honour your passion for action & courage of those who have spoken out. I hope today’s decision makers hear
#enoughisenough
& it’s time for lasting change & real justice.
Bob Hawke was the greatest peacetime leader Australia has ever had.
As a teenager Bob inspired me, as a PM he guided me.
I will miss him. I wish so very much that Bob had been able to see one more election day.
My condolences to Blanche, his children and grandchildren.
We stand united with our friends in New Zealand.
Tonight there are children going to bed missing a parent. Parents who have lost a child.
Their tragic losses follow acts of cowardly hatred.
Let’s honour their memories by strengthening our commitment to compassion and love.
The High Court of Australia has today issued its decision on the case involving Cardinal George Pell. I do not intend to comment on that judgement.
But I do wish to address the impact on our community.
Australian women are still undervalued in the workforce, earning 13.8% or $255.30 a week less than men, which can have negative economic and social impacts over a lifetime. Thrilled to see
@AlboMP
’s policy to make gender pay equity an objective of the Fair Work Act.
Thank you America for showing that while democracy can be messy, it works, and for embracing a future of hope and reason. Congratulations to President-elect
@JoeBiden
A courageous concession speech from
@billshortenmp
. He and the entire
@AustralianLabor
team can be extremely proud of a campaign that put the ALP values of fairness and equality front and centre. I’m certainly proud of all of you.
People discharged from hospital after a suicide attempt are at high risk of trying to end their lives again. That’s why Australia needs universal aftercare.
I am delighted to make my official start today as Chair of

I’m honoured to join a high performing team dedicated to supporting science in solving the urgent health challenges we all face.
A great privilege to receive the Honorary Degree of Doctor of the
@UniofAdelaide
today. It is the place I discovered my passion for public policy and advocacy. It was also the first uni in Australia and one of the first in the world to admit women to all degree programs in 1881.
We have lost a global feminist icon in Helen Reddy. For decades her song ‘I am Woman’ has given full-throated voice to our fight for gender equality. Every word still relevant, no message dated, including we have ‘a long, long way to go’. Her legacy will endure. Hear us roar.
On this historic day, my personal thanks go to the Royal Commissioners and all who supported their work. Our nation is indebted to you and to the survivors who fought so hard for justice and a safer future for our children. JG
I am shocked and saddened that we have lost feminist hero and Labor giant, Susan Ryan. Every Australian’s life has been improved by her leadership on gender equality. She blazed the trail for Labor women, including me. I honour a woman of courage and true believer.
I am very grateful to have received my 2nd dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine. My thanks go to the staff & volunteers at the Waldron Health Centre.
I urge everyone to take up opportunities to be vaccinated and to play their part in helping protect the community from COVID-19.
This was the last time I saw Bob Hawke. I am terribly sad to miss his memorial today. He inspired the Labor Party to govern well. He inspired the nation to embrace a better future. He inspired me as Prime Minister as I sought to live up to his example. He continues to inspire me.
📢 Big news: We’re proud to welcome
@JuliaGillard
as our new Chair!
During her time as Australia’s Prime Minister, Julia navigated the global financial crisis, education reforms and improvements in healthcare.
She joins us in April 2021:
Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s intellect, wise words and determination to achieve gender equality shined throughout her long life of achievement. She inspired women around the world to do more and fight harder. RBG will be missed but her legacy endures.

The last time I was on

Congratulations to

I have fond memories of spending time with Prince Philip during his visit to Australia at the time of CHOGM in Perth. While a man of duty, he had a sense of fun.
His loss will be mourned by the Queen, his family and millions around the world.
For me, it is a personal and cathartic exercise looking back at THAT speech. But what has meant even more has been gathering the reflections and thoughts from others about then, now, and what next. In October, to mark the 10 year anniversary, I will share it all with you.
Recovery from sexual abuse in childhood can be complex and can take time. For many people, particularly those who have experienced trauma, today’s news may bring a range of emotions. It’s important to know that support is available.
I want our nation to be a world leader in gender equality.
Australia’s response to the violent, sexist and misogynistic conduct in our Parliament needs to be urgent, and ambitious.
My thoughts here:
A celebration in Sydney tonight with
@tanya_plibersek
of 20 years strong service in Federal Parliament - fighting always for her constituents, her community, our country. I am so proud to stand with her.
Congratulations to
@PMalinauskasMP
and
@alpsa
on an historic victory! Pleased South Australians have endorsed the progressive policies needed to create a stronger and fairer future for our great state.
Congratulations
@JacintaAllanMP
.
It’s wonderful to welcome the second female premier in Victoria’s history.
I heartily agree with your sentiments that there is a place for women at every decision-making table.
I have just disembarked from a long-haul flight to learn the terribly sad news of Queen Elizabeth II’s death. My thoughts are with the Royal Family today and with all those affected by this news. She was a remarkable role model with an incredible dedication to service.
Looking back on my time in politics, I do wish I’d called out the sexism earlier. Thanks to
@FinancialTimes
for the chance to discuss my time as PM and how
@GIWLkings
will work to create more female leaders
Congratulations to all the
@AustralianLabor
winners tonight. They each waged strong campaigns that spoke to the issues that matter. A great result for
@billshortenmp
and the entire the Labor team.
I have been reading the reviews of
@theresa_may
’s time in office. While I am from the progressive side of politics, I admired her resilience. I wish her all the best.
The bravery of the victims of child sex abuse has been acknowledged by the Royal Commission. Their voices finally heard by the nation. Nothing can take away the hurt, but a national apology & fair compensation are the next steps in recognising the lifetime of pain they endure-JG
I'm delighted to launch the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership at

@GIWLkings
will work to accelerate change.
It’s been a privilege to get to know Chrissie Foster. She and her late husband Anthony bravely spoke out and campaigned for the Royal Commission into institutional child sexual abuse. I congratulate her on the well deserved honour of a Member of the Order of Australia (AM).
I was very honoured today to receive an honorary doctorate from
@OUCymru
in Wales, where my family originated and where I was born, and to engage with the graduates and faculty on this special occasion.

In a world of far too few women leaders, I congratulate
@GladysB
on being the first woman to win a NSW state election & well done to
@MichaelDaleyMP
&
@NSWLabor
on a hard fought campaign.
Very honoured to receive the

Ceiling Smasher Award today. As always, I am in great company - congratulations to all the nominees and award winners.
Huge congratulations to my wonderful friend and co-author Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on becoming the leader of the World Trade Organisation. Ngozi, thank you for making history again!
@NOIweala
Today on the 6th anniversary of the National Apology for Forced Adoptions, my thoughts are with those who were hurt by the practices of forced adoption, and still live with the pain today.
Jenny Macklin is a special combination of an enormous heart and huge brain. She used both to drive compassionate, caring and highly effective reforms for Australia. Our nation is immensely better off for her service. My personal thanks to her for all her help and support.
Aus. politics will miss Jenny Macklin’s drive, sense of social justice, and intellect. An outstanding role model for women who aspire to be leaders, and for all those who serve their communities. I hope Jenny now gets to indulge her sense of fun and spend more time with family.
If you told me one day, I’d be hosting my own podcast, let alone winning awards for one, I would have said:
’I’ve got as much chance of doing that as being Australia’s first female Prime Minister!'
Thrilled to receive an

A great win for the Dees - well deserved, and well waited for. Commiserations to the Western Bulldogs players, coaches and staff. Upwards and onwards for next year.
Time seems to fly. Amazing that it has been 10 years since I became Prime Minister. My thanks to
@EMILYsListAus
for helping me reflect on that period of public service.
The Gillard Government – reflecting on Nation Changing Policies ten years later
The Gillard Government introduced an emissions trading scheme to combat climate change. During the period the carbon price was in operation, it worked.

I thought the rate of change on gender equality would be pretty fast – that it would be fixed by time I was in my 40s or 50s. But there’s clearly a lot more to do, which is why I helped set up

Great to talk about this for

It was my very great honour this evening to receive an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from
@CurtinUni

Vale Yunupingu. Widely respected, and known for his wise and enduring counsel, he worked with many Prime Ministers towards a better future. While we no longer have the power of his advocacy, we can honour his legacy through The Voice.
A good bloke, a character and a high-achiever - Tim Fischer will be sorely missed by all of us. But the greatest loss will be felt by Judy, Harrison & Dominic. My thoughts are with you.
It can be difficult to understand why a person who appears to have it all takes their own life, but nobody is immune when it comes to suicide risk and mental illness. MORE:

With Australia’s 1st female Prime Minister, the Gillard Government fought for gender equality, including requiring balanced gov boards, addressing the gender pay gap for social/community sector workers, and introducing Dad and Partner Pay.

As a young activist and student in Melbourne, I was awed by Premier John Cain, a reforming giant of the Labor Party. My sense of deep respect and affection never lessened. What a life of achievement. He will be missed.
Whatever code you follow, it’s been a difficult year for footy fans. Here’s hoping we get to celebrate tomorrow & FIFA announces the 2023 Women’s World Cup will be hosted in Aus & NZ. That would give us a great way to promote women’s sport and better gender equality.

For some, the new year heralds health and wellbeing goals. As Chair of Beyond Blue, I’m often asked how I look after my own wellbeing. It’s the simple things that work for me.
As PM, I had the privilege of working with David Hurley. He is a strong and compassionate person. I congratulate him on his appointment as the next GG.
