Source: Houston senior guard Rob Gray has been suspended one game by the NCAA for participating in a church rec league game this offseason. He will not play in
@UHCougarMBK
season opener tonight against McNeese State.
Only athletes are presumed guilty, immediately suspended, and must prove themselves innocent. Quite a contrast to coaches facing allegations in the FBI investigations and federal prosecutions...they are presumed innocent until proven guilty. What an amazing concept.
Ohio State is holding out defensive end Chase Young, a Heisman Trophy contender, for a potential undisclosed violation of NCAA rules, the university announced Friday.
UCF is 13-0 after beating Auburn, but had no shot to compete for the National Championship. Every game counts, huh? Not so much. Scott Frost and UCF should’ve been in the playoff.
Coaches getting in a postgame fight. Not players, coaches. Calling timeout and pressing in a blowout instead of running out the clock, and can’t shake hands without acting like big babies. Weak and foolish. There are multiple degrees of culpability, none more than Howard. Awful.
Hey NCAA: since you have now admitted that college athletes are professional, how about righting past wrongs and reinstating the records of Reggie Bush, the Fab Five, and countless others you mistreated over the phony concept of amateurism? It was unfair then, and clearly so now.
Some will say elite prospects don’t value college sports. The truth is, college sports doesn’t value its elite prospects, either. No purpose was served by suspending Wiseman 12 games. What a sad waste of time and resources. These rules and sanctions need to change.
If you watched any of the Women’s Final Four, you saw rules of the game that Men’s College Basketball should adopt. Quarters, team foul reset, advance the ball in last minute...the Women’s game is better administered, and the Men’s game should follow suit.
Our friend and legend

is beginning treatment today. If you can, let’s all share our best wishes with Dick on this thread, and let him know how much he means to us, and to the game. We love you,

Tom Rinaldi, boarding a flight this morning, greeted the flight attendant with, “Good morning! What are your hopes and dreams?” She began weeping uncontrollably. Flight delayed.
Let’s see if we have this straight: Miami has a football coach, under contract. Yet, Miami is negotiating with another coach, under contract at another school. Please NCAA and college presidents, lecture us some more about “integrity.” Clearly, you don’t know the word’s meaning.
Coaches complain about players opting out of bowl games, and two coaches agree to new jobs while their teams are competing for a spot in the CFP? This can’t be good for the industry. How can college presidents condone such interference with coaches under contract? Integrity? Nah.
So sad to hear that former Michigan State star Adreian Payne passed away at the age of 31. AP was an outstanding player for Tom Izzo, and befriended Lacey Holsworth through her battle with cancer. RIP Adreian Payne.
RIP to the great John Chaney, the iconic former Temple coach. Chaney was an American original. I absolutely loved talking with him, including his early morning practices where he had a lecture for his players that would rival any sermon. A great, great man.
RIP John Thompson, one of the game’s greatest coaches. His teams were smart, disciplined and ferocious on defense. Thompson was thoughtful and forceful on social issues, and always took the principled stand. A true giant, on the floor and off.
College Football, where “every game counts,” except for Cincinnati’s and Indiana’s games, which were clearly just exhibition games. College Football is College Basketball with a smaller tournament, and no way to win your way into the field.
Toppin. Ionescu. Winston. Powell. Howard. Garza. Alarie. Cowan. Jones. Azubuike. Mays. Cox. Tillie. Mooney. Flynn. Stevens. Pritchard...just a few of the stars that won’t finish the year the way they hoped and expected. Heartbreaking. Respect and empathy for them all.
The issue isn’t whether NBA players have an “end game.” After George Floyd’s murder, the NBA, owners, media partners, sponsors, and so many of us stood with the players. The real question isn’t what will THEY do now, it’s WHAT WILL WE DO? It’s not just on them. It’s on US.
Cincinnati really messed up. The Bearcats should’ve scheduled Louisiana, lost by two touchdowns, and then they would have risen in the CFP rankings. Every game counts? Please.
Great perspective. That Tim Tebow wishes to turn down compensation doesn’t mean all should be required to. He is free to play for free. All athletes should have the same economic rights as LITERALLY everyone else. That’s real choice.
Seventeen years ago today...The young and future King James and the beautifully coiffed Jay Bilas. The King was spectacular, but The Bilastrator’s hair was even better.

I’m so glad I went to law school, passed the bar exam, and have been licensed to practice law for the last 26 years. That way, I can talk about basketball.
This is interesting. Amateurism is already dead. Isn’t the issue just whether a college athlete is enrolled in school as a full-time student in good standing? Any college athlete can make a paid appearance, why disallow actual earnings?
Fiona Crawley, a student at University of North Carolina, competed at the US Open & earned $81,000.
She forfeited the money. If she had accepted it, she wouldn’t have been eligible for NCAA.
“I’d never take the money & never risk my eligibility. But I worked my butt off this
Yet, the NCAA is concerned about player transfers and “poaching.” Tucker was under a multi-year contract, and at Colorado for just one year. So, tortious interference with contract is okay, but player transfers are not. Amazing.
Maori Davenport should be reinstated immediately. The Alabama High School Athletic Association, specifically Steve Savarese, ruled Maori ineligible for a clerical error. It’s heartless, mindless, and wrong. Savarese has the authority to fix this. He needs to fix it. Now.
Wow. An official in the UNC-FSU game literally turned his back on a four-year player trying to speak with him after a dead ball timeout. And, officials talk about players showing officials up. Ridiculous.
Roy Williams has been a credit to the profession, and one of the truly great coaches of all-time, in any sport. Williams is also a wonderful person. Congratulations on a magnificent career, and thank you.
Wait, is this all it takes?! Okay, well, I don’t think Jennifer Lawrence is real, she is a remote controlled cyborg. So, there. I should get her invitation shortly.
NASA has offered to give NBA superstar Steph Curry a tour of one of its lunar labs after the Golden State Warriors guard said that he doubts humans landed on the moon
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is being interviewed on ESPN right now. Candidly, this is what real leadership looks like. Smart, informed, reassuring, with a global perspective beyond the NBA itself. Bravo.
"I can't be more proud of the group that I just coached this year."
Hubert Davis sounds off on the Tar Heels special season 👏

Urban Meyer was “not complete and accurate” at media day. Wow. That’s some rhetorical gymnastics. I’m not sure one can do a limbo dance low enough to see Ohio State’s “high standards.”
I know Roy Williams doesn’t want to hear this because of his reverence for Coach Dean Smith, but Roy Williams is absolutely in the same class as a coach. Quite simply, Williams and Smith are two of the best ever, in any sport. Congrats to Roy Williams on his 879th win.

After learning of the cancellation of the Memphis-Tennessee game an hour before the scheduled tip, the Vols’ players decided they wanted to scrimmage. Players play.
MJ was an amazing college player, on the highest tier of greatness. But, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was the greatest college player ever. It’s simply not close. He was 88-2, a 3-time champion, a 3-time MOP, and a 3-time POY. Kareem was the college GOAT.

I had the honor to work alongside Hubert for many years at ESPN, and I simply don’t know a better person. Don’t let the smile and laugh fool you, Hubert is a cutthroat competitor with an uncommon understanding of the game. And, he bleeds Carolina Blue. Hubert is the real deal.
Breaking: North Carolina is expected to promote longtime assistant Hubert Davis as the Tar Heels’ new head coach, sources have confirmed to ESPN.
First reported by Inside Carolina and the Raleigh News & Observer.
All due respect to the selections and the voters, but how does UNC’s Kenny Williams not make the ACC All-Defensive Team? There needs to be a recount. There is no way he’s not among the league’s five best defenders. No way.
My favorite part of the illogical, nonsensical CFP rankings: Florida State isn’t as good as Alabama…but the ‘Noles are better than Georgia, which was the “best team” last week. That makes perfect sense.
Put players’ name and likeness on a bus, billboards, anywhere you like, for nothing. But, a player sells his shoes? An NCAA crime, perhaps even a federal crime.
Arizona may bolt for the B12? The B10 is scouting UO and UW to join UCLA and USC? SDSU may bolt the MWC? FSU openly talking about leaving the ACC? Yet, we still entertain coaches, ADs and legislators complain about the transfer portal ruining college sports? Seriously?
Heartbroken. Eric Montross was the nicest, kindest person one could ever know. A great player and champion, husband, father, friend, and a truly wonderful, beautiful soul. RIP Eric Montross.
Illinois, Ohio State, Purdue, and now, Iowa...the top Big Ten teams we saw all season did not show up in the NCAA Tournament. This isn’t “overrated.” This is “underperforming.” Surprising.
There was no legit reason for the officials to bring the KU and K-State back onto the floor after a fight and the clock at 0.00. None. The fight was unacceptable, and should be dealt with. It was absolutely wrong to put one second back on the clock. Poor judgment.
NCAA president calls for immediate, meaningful change in basketball, calls bribery allegations “disgusting.” But, asked about Dr. Larry Nassar, convicted student-athlete abuser, and Michigan State, he doesn’t have enough information for an opinion? That’s just not good enough.
NCAA President doesn’t have enough information to have an opinion on the biggest sex abuse case in NCAA history, after convictions and victim impact statements. But, he can state allegations of amateurism violations are “disgusting.” Wow.
So, Alabama loses a game to a higher ranked team in LSU, but drops below a Georgia team that lost to a sub-.500 South Carolina team? Huh? Alabama is Top 4, without reasonable argument.
@AlabamaFTBL
Alabama slides to No. 5 in the CFP rankings following its loss to LSU.
The Crimson Tide are outside the Top 4 for the first time since Nov. 28, 2017 (also 5th).
Alabama won the National Championship that season.
Gonzaga…Nine consecutive Sweet 16 appearances. Go ahead, try to rationalize or marginalize that. You can’t. No other program can match it today, and precious few in history can, either. Amazing.

Hopefully, one thing that will extend into the future from the NBA Bubble will be the way coaches dress for games. There is no reason to wear suits and ties anymore. Same for college hoops...dress like Maui!
By saying “yes” to Coach K, I had the honor of having Quin Snyder as a teammate and friend for over 37 years. Quin was a great player, and the smartest basketball mind I’ve known. A hoop savant.
37 years ago, I met Johnny Dawkins. I don’t know a better man. Dawkins and Coach K are the reason Duke is what it is today. He’s the most important player in Duke history. But, that’ll all be out the window at 5:15pm!
North Carolina and Baylor are playing a physical, tough, competitive game. But, it’s not basketball. It’s hockey and rugby. This has been happening all season, and needs to change.
