Christian Miller aka BurroughsJunior was a 4x champion at Plainview and his fierce fighting spirit will never be forgotten. We had some great banter and talks about the sport and I never met a kid that wanted to win more. My condolences to his family, Plainview and GBR wrestling.
Max Hughes was one of the fiercest competitors we've ever had in our state. His record of achievement in our sport was gigantic. My deepest condolences to Jon, Barb and Bailey. May God comfort you all in this darkest of times. The wrestling community mourns with you today.
The state and our sport lost two legends today. May their competetive spirits live on forever in our hearts and may we never forget their great positive impact on us all. Men, save a seat for me matside when we meet again one day
We can confirm the passing of state medalist Ashton Schweitzer of Broken Bow, formerly of Pierce. Lots of people in both communities hurting right now. Please keep them in your hearts during this difficult this time. A significant loss of a great young wrestler and student.
Respecting the wishes of the families right now. Please pray. I'm so crushed but I will update when I'm able. Enormous losses to our wrestling family. Just enormous
Clayton Grice, father of Garrett and Gabe passed away. Got to watch his sons compete in the state tournament one more time a few weeks ago. Godspeed to everyone effected.
ALL the respect in the world for Dylan Vodicka. Services for his father held this morning and he's out there on the mat competing this afternoon. Not much else to say that speaks for itself
Garrett Grice is the 35th 4x state champion in Nebraska history. He goes out with an incredible 196-1 career record and wins his final match for his Coach Todd Porter who is retiring this year
Just remember, if you wrestle, you never really lose. Even if you didn't reach your goals, this sport makes you a winner in life! So many people couldn't last five minutes in a wrestling room!
Skers officially locked into 5th
From 6th in B10 to 5th in NCAA they really regrouped in the last few weeks and wrestled like the team we thought they could be this season. Lots of credit to coaches and wrestlers for righting the ship. People should be proud of this group!
Huge loss for O'Neill, Northern State and the wrestling community. Don't have the the words anymore. Keep everyone up there in your thoughts and prayers 😢
Touching moment at the Devaney Center as Christian Miller's family is presented flowers, shirt, and shoes from head coach Mark Manning.

Our sport is all about toughness but this kind of tragedy will turn men into mere mortals. There's a lot of really tough guys out there that have tears running down their faces right now. This is heavy stuff, real loss.
Know it sounds like a broken record lately but we're going to need some more thoughts and prayers. Working on details will let you know more when I know more. We've apparently lost another young student athlete 😢
Mad respect to all of you kids that work so hard and make the sport so enjoyable. Remember that a scoreboard doesn't define you-your character does. Everyone drive home safe!
Husker wrestling coach Mark Manning called Christian Miller's death a devastating loss for everyone who knew and loved Miller. The other crash victim, Max Hughes of Syracuse, won three state titles at three weight divisions as a high school standout.
Our state tournament coverage this year is dedicated to the memories of Max Hughes, Christian Miller and Josh Warren of Bridgeport; Coach Boyer of Plainview who continues to fight the good fight; and Coach Mowinkel of Logan View who we hope makes a full recovery
Pretty sure 99% of regular people out there couldn't function in this environment. These kids are pretty special being able to handle this atmosphere and all that's on the line. Win or lose the respect for these athletes is unwavering!
Ron Higdon probably doesn't get near the credit he deserves for making wrestling in Nebraska a top notch sport. Watched his attention to details all weekend even sizing up mat placement. Lucky to have him here!
Ryan Christo was originally from Albion. Wrestled 185 in the 1995 state Class B championship team. Was state champ in 1996 at 189. Sounds like he was able to watch his son Blaine compete at state before passing. Just 41 years old 😢
I know many of you are hurting right now like I am. My prayers to all of you too. Grieving right with everyone wish we had a wrestling tournament to gather at to be together
Couple things-sessions just simply way too long. Yesterday ran from 8:30 until 9. That's too much for anybody. Feel like we're back in Devaney Center era
Unsportsmanlike calls during finals. C'mon. Having fun isn't unsportsmanlike. Think this rule went way too far.
Just think about Burke for a second. In last month they've had two athletes compete on a world team. One win a national championship and earn OW. Two more All Americans in Jr Greco. Now Henrich to the Huskers. What a stretch for the Bulldogs!
Really nice service for Ashton Schweitzer. Young man was very accomplished in so many areas and made quite an impact on so many during his life. No doubt will be missed greatly. RIP kid.
Going to miss Moomey he's one of the great wrestlers in our state's history. Look forward to watching this guy do work on the D1 level and beyond. Thanks for being a class act over the last 4 years Phillip!
To those that didn't reach your goal of state tournament or state medal, I feel your pain and hurt. You have to let that desire to never feel like that again be your greatest motivator going forward. Not just in wrestling but life. Be proud of all your efforts this year!
Tell you this-in all my years involved with HS sports, don't think I've ever been more proud of a group of coaches and wrestlers than I am of Bow after what they did today. Courage defined. It was pretty glorious watching this bunch compete today. Very special and inspiring
Breaking Friday News:
Have learned that Bellevue East has hired Glenwood IA native and current UNK standout Matt Malcom to be their next Head Coach replacing Todd Porter. Malcom will finish up his college career at D2 Nationals next week. Quite the splash hire IMO!
Got a message last night regarding former PLV and Millard South wrestler Austin McDonald. Had a serious asthma attack that's left him in critical condition-next few days are really important. You know what to do prayer warriors! 🙏
This is Broken Bows day. Team and coaches have to do some things today that the vast majority of us will never have to in our lives. Much respect that way!
Here we go! Wishing all wrestlers, coaches, fans and media the absolute best on the 3 month journey. All roads lead to February in Omaha! Dreamchaser szn!
Best of luck to all the dream chasers that will put it on the line across the state the next two days. If you've made it this far in the season, you've already won in more ways that you might know. It's go time ✌
I'll tell you unequivocally that as good of a wrestler as James Burks is, he's an even better kid. One of the most polite respectful young people I've had the pleasure of interacting with. Job well done looking for big things in your collegiate career!
Here we go! Good luck to coaches and wrestlers on your 4 month journey to late February. May your visionquest be full of triumph and take you wherever you dream of! All the best in mind body and spirit-will see you on the road!
Hard to find the words for the last three days but it's time for reflection. Congrats to wrestlers, teams, coaches and everyone else who makes the sport completely unrivaled. Enjoy, celebrate, eat and be with friends and family! Everyone deserves it after the grind of the year!
Kael and Kyler Lauridsen became the 20th known set of brothers to win a state title in the same year in state history. They can join the sibling duos of Kevin & Kenny Nordhues, Zach & Quintin Cottle and James & Jakason Burks to accomplish the feat twice next year
On this NYE if you could keep our great friend Coach Mowinkel in your thoughts and prayers I know his family and the Logan View family would appreciate it 🙏
So incredibly humbled to accept this honor you guys have no idea. It means so much that my peers would think enough to elect me to the Hall of Fame. As Jimmy Johnson said, when you put in so much work, it's nice to know people appreciate it 😭 Congrats to all 2020 HOF!
Well seniors, two official days of practice left in your HS careers. You all have been a great bunch to watch grow and compete over the last 4-5 years. Hope you get what you're after this weekend and close it out with no regrets. Thank you for your work and good luck!
Before today's match,
@HuskerWrestling
paid tribute to Christian Miller, a wrestler who tragically passed in a car accident in November.
Forever a Husker. ❤️
As always, Mr Throne AD from Millard South out here watching the Patriots in the finals. What other Athletic Directors are here supporting their teams??
The response and outpouring of support for Christian and Max and their families and communities is as we would be expect from all over. They will be missed immensely.
Kael Lauridsen, the ultimate definition of a team player. Sacrificed to make the weight cut so Bennington could get their best lineup on the mat. That's what it's all about! No hyperbole, the real deal.
