My partner went to Starbucks & got 2 bagels & coffees & the barista asked him if it was for his valentine & he said no its for the homeless guy outside & this bitch was like “This is why they don’t leave the area” then they went to try & make the guy leave.
Ppl are so miserable
This lady is telling us about this painful ordeal about getting tested for monkey pox and I just can’t get over how she’s still tanning with painful rash and sores all over her body
A friend told me about a seamstress that is sewing face masks (for free) for her community w/donated fabric and the men are angrily refusing to wear floral patterns 😩
During a pandemic
This isn’t heartwarming.
Disabled people fighting for their lives never is.
Bravery should never involve literal freaking children trying to dodge obstacles that shouldn’t be there in the 1st place omg
Ableds are definitely confusing “some want the pandemic to last forever”
With “People need to follow guidelines bc we (Disabled people) REALLY don’t want to die”
And
“Quarantine has suddenly made lots of things accessible & we would like these accommodations to stick around”
I don’t want to share the vid again, but a Black, Autistic kid was dropped off on her 18th bday at a homeless shelter by her adoptive family
She was being interviewed & I can tell she had NO idea why her family would do that
I really hate that her story isn’t that uncommon
Someone just told me a postmates delivery guy showed up and said "im here to deliver to the lazy motherfucker that ordered from 4 blocks away"
Some Disabled and elderly folks can’t just mosey on down the street for their groceries. They still need to eat. ♿️
My friend has autism gets special testing accommodations. She takes exams in a private room, where she uses her notes to do better. Is that fair? And is it actually helping her?
Shifting away from “being Disabled is expensive”
to
“There are intentional structural inequalities that force & keep disabled people into poverty”
I think is important..
Maybe will touch on this later once my brain fog clears or I’ll forget. Either or 🙃
Just took a shower and here is your constant reminder to let go of that ego/pride
And get yourself a shower bench, chair, stool
You literally don’t have to stand (unless you need to ofc)
I know animals can be super intelligent & express I wide array of emotions but it’s hella weird when an animal is Disabled & ppl project their ableist views on them
“This dog is blind but it doesn’t let it get him down! He’s happy anyway!!!”
And I’m just like..he’s a dog, Pam
The last of the “Ugly Laws”
which allowed police to jail Disabled people for being seen in public ended in **1974**
They’ve been rebranded as anti homeless bills & proposals for forced institutionalizations.
It’s never about malls, libraries, bathrooms. Just Disabled hate.
Hawaii could become the 1st state to discriminate against Disabled ppl by taking away their ability to eat and drink safely. Lawmakers continue to dance around the real causes of pollution because of greed. 🙃♿️
Hawaii could become the first state to completely ban plastic at restaurants. Lawmakers just introduced proposals to ban plastic straws, utensils, bags and plastic foam cups, an effort to cut down on plastic pollution in our oceans.
In all seriousness.
Watch Crip Camp on Netflix if you haven’t
The Disability Rights Movement is history that is often times ignored yet changed the lives of millions.
But keep in mind the issues discussed in the film are *still* very real for Disabled ppl today! 👩🦼👩🦯🧑🦽🚶♂️👩🦽
My partner told me of this person he knew that recently passed due to a fall. For some time before this he had refused getting a walker.
Please I cannot stress it enough:
If you’re thinking about a mobility aid please get one before it’s too late. Please.
Call the Midwife has really changed how I watch tv shows.
Whenever I come across a show w/disabled characters w/no disabled actors I’m flabbergasted bc I know it can be done
Reminder that disabled people have been fighting for things like telehealth & remote learning before the pandemic.
It’s accessibility & life saving, not some emergency one time thing. ♿️
I’m thinking of all the Disabled people in harms way right now.
War is a mass disabling event. DP aren’t thought of during emergency preparedness, evacuations, & struggle even more so afterwards as refugees. The world is inaccessible but almost impossible to maneuver during war.
Disabled people: x is inaccessible
Ableds: Just find a workaround!!
Oh do I have some news about living disabled. I spend most of my days and energy trying to find workarounds for myself and others. We shouldn't have to.
I hope everyone that was harassing Disabled people for using (& needing) life saving straws ditched that snazzy unrecyclable wrapping paper this year 🤭🥤
You can be ableist without knowing it. You can be ableist without hating disabled people. You can be ableist without intending to be. Start actively unlearning.
#MakeAbleistsUncomfortable
@yumcoconutmilk
There was a lady taking care of her mother in HOSPICE and folks were berating her for buying her Starbucks.
Sweet summer child let her have her mocha choco lata yaya
I need EVERYONE to realize that DISABLED people are THREE TIMES more likely to be assaulted
THREE TIMES
This “act deaf” “act blind” “act crazy” or whatever tf Tyra Banks said 30 years ago was always harmful, dangerous and statistically incorrect
The Paralympics really took someone’s medal away bc they didn’t make the announcements accessible & had them in a language the athlete didn’t understand so he was late🙃
I hate Frida’s bday because people come out of the woodworks on here to try & tell INDIGENOUS Zapotec women how to feel about their culture being stolen right from under them 😩
“Well... what did Disabled people do before *insert important thing Disabled ppl need that others are trying to dismiss here* ”
The answer will always be: We died.
The Venn diagram of the people that were willing to risk sick and Disabled people for a hair cut and the ones saying you shouldn’t wish bad things on people is prob a circle ⭕️
Went to the gyno the other day for the 1st time since COVID started & they got an accessible exam table in my absence & they were so excited to show me.
It was the 1st time where the exam table was *too* low (it was able to go *all* the way down!) ♿️
Canada *coerces* Disabled people into euthanasia by denying them affordable housing and a living wage. It devalues the lives of Disabled people.
Fixed it for you.
Canada allows people with serious disabilities to choose euthanasia in the absence of any other medical issue. Human rights advocates say that devalues the lives of disabled people.
Someone asked my partner why we aren’t married & he explained that if we do I’d most likely lose my healthcare & the guy got so mad he almost flipped the table 😭
Yes! Let the hate flow through you… and demand change 📧 📞 📢
“Oh I didn’t mean to include/exclude Disabled people when I tweeted this terrible take/imaginary harsh law/utopian daydream!”
Yeah, we know. That’s part of the problem.
I’m going to need folks to stop saying “Quit letting your disability define you”
Disability shapes my every day life and I’m going to need you to stop making that be a negative.
Since I’m reading what Mr Beast did & paraplegic folks are getting thrown into the mix:
Hi! It’s me! I’m the one that wouldn’t want to wake up walking.
My body was made not to walk.
My disability made it evolve into its present form.
I’m ok w/it!
More accessibility please!
Something makes me itch when Ableds praise Disabled people for “suffering in silence”
It’s like “thank you for not having me & others feel remotely uncomfortable with your pain. So resilient!” 🤢
A few years ago a BIG communist account turned out to be a fed after people realized she was posting selfies from known upscale government getaways and that’s why I don’t trust no one on these Twitter streets lol
my sister RUINING thanksgiving w her damn celiac disease… my mama suggested making a gluten free apple pie w tapioca flour i said hell no!! This is America!
Please stop telling Disabled people to “lawyer up” when we tell you about our inaccessibility problems
It would be the most obvious & common sense thing to do if it wasn’t so obscenely unaffordable.
🧵 Today is Disability Day of Mourning. If you’re not familiar it’s a day where the Disabled community mourns the deaths of our people at the hands of parents & caregivers.
#DDoM2022
Having a family member of mine tell my mom not to worry about Covid bc it “only effects Disabled people” is why I don’t automatically believe having a Disabled family member makes you more trustworthy 🙃
Friendly reminder that wheelchairs mean mobility, freedom, and independence.
What “confines” me are things like the lack of: ramps, elevators, paved roads, wider doorways and accessible transportation.
Thank you for coming to my TedTalk. ♿️
Idk who needs to hear this but disabled ppls lives REVOLVE around “looking for alternatives”
Backup drs. Backup routes. Backup foods. Backup modes of transportations. Backup ways to reach things that fall away.
We dont always find them. Pls stop suggesting it like we dont know
Vaccines may not be as effective for people who are immuno-compromised.
Protecting them needs to be a top priority, researchers say — both to keep them safe and to slow the emergence of new variants.
I can see Disabled people sitting down in almost every way for valid reasons.
Medical professionals really need to keep their thoughts about patients to themselves
Please get the vaccine if the option is presented to you.
I know it’s easy to feel guilt bc “some people are more at risk” but as of rn the more ppl vaxxed the better.
You’re still doing a part to keep others safe. You can still be an advocate for a better system.
If people can stop trying to be the disabled police that would be great.
You are harming actual Disabled people!
Not all disabilities require a mobility device. Some disabled ppl need them some of the time or not at all. ♿️
A local woman with Parkinson's Disease says she received a hateful note and scratches on her vehicle after she parked in a handicapped spot.
@deannadurante
has the story:
@GuildingLilly
Twist: the person shaking their fist while holding the “differently Abled” sign is an actual Disabled person tired of ppl calling them the cringeworthy patronizing term “differently abled” ♿️
