The severe suffering of 3 million children at the sharpest end of our poverty emergency is unseen and unreported. These are austerity’s children – millions of boys and girls living through what is for them the “hungry 20s” in food bank Britain.

Sad to hear of the death of Denis Law, a Scottish football legend whom I had the privilege to watch and meet. Denis was one of footballs greats. My thoughts are with the Law family.

Today, and on 9 January – earmarked by Joe Biden as a national day of mourning – we will remember a life of service and a moral compass: things that will be celebrated long after the lives of many other presidents are forgotten.

I count it a privilege to have known and worked with Jimmy Carter and learn from him. The secret to the success of his long life of public service is that he treated everyone equally, was a friend to everyone and subservient to no one.

Sad to hear of the death of Manmohan Singh. I remember him as the incorruptible former Indian Prime Minister who helped the world through the global financial crisis and as a friend whose integrity could never be doubted.

Congratulations to Judi Dench on her 90th birthday. It is a remarkable achievement that she published her excellent book on Shakespeare, which I am currently reading, in her 89th year.
