Frogs across Ireland are emerging from hibernation and migrating to various breeding sites. The males arrive first and croak loudly & consistently to attract females. There will be a lot of frogs on the road making this perilous journey. Please be careful to not injure them! 🐸

Irish waters are being damaged by nitrogen from fertilisers & manures, and phosphorus from agricultural runoff & wastewater discharges. These cause an overgrowth of plants & algae, clogging up our waters and using up oxygen which harms fish & aquatic life:

1. There was no real improvement in the quality of Irish rivers or lakes in 2022. High levels of nitrogen and phosphorus (mostly from agriculture and wastewater) are damaging Irish waters. Read EPA’s latest Water Quality Report here: #water #waterquality

The EPA successfully prosecuted an individual for the unauthorised industrial extraction of peat in an area greater than 50 hectares. The EPA will take legal action against anyone carrying out industrial extraction of peat without an EPA licence.🔗

Pluto was rescued in Kinvarra, Co Galway on 7th July by @seal_rescue . He was a few days old and abandoned by his mother. This usually happens because of human disturbance or dog attacks. Please make sure to keep dogs on a lead and keep at least 100m from seals on beaches.

The former Director of a waste facility in Kerdiffstown, Co Kildare, was today sentenced to 3 years in prison on each of 3 charges for serious environmental offences. The sentences will run concurrently with the final 12 months suspended.

1/3 Roadside hedge-cutting is not legally allowed from 1st March to 31st August. Each year, thousands of hectares of these habitats are destroyed out of closed season. Usually this involves incineration where wildlife find themselves trapped and, ultimately, killed.
