The devastation in our region is unfathomable. People are suffering and in desperate need. Please donate what you can to these mutual aid efforts across the region. A 🧵:
Tyre Nichols, who had Crohn’s disease, should be alive.
Half of people killed by police have a disability. 55% of Black disabled men are arrested by 28 yrs old. 2/3 of our prison population are disabled.
Racism & ableism are woven into the system.
Tyre Nichols deserves justice

Disabled folks in the South are fired up and fighting back 💪🏼
Thank you all for the support!
#RyanGainer
, a Black autistic child from California, was murdered by police. There is no training or reforming a system which dehumanizes Black disabled lives. And while Ryan did not live in the South, we can’t be silent as this reverberates across the nation. Abolition now.
We are so proud and excited to announce the launch of our Plain Language Policy Dashboard! The dashboard is a tool that translates complex bills from Southern states into plain language. Take a look!
Seems like a good moment to once again shout out our friend
@VilissaThompson
. Black disabled women are the backbone of this movement and we honor Vilissa’s work today and every day.

There’s no issue more “kitchen table” than giving disabled people home and community-based services rather than institutions.
There’s no better way to “grow Georgia” than increasing pay for care workers.
Disabled Georgians, families, and providers deserve freedom & opportunity.
New Disabled South is fighting for a South that values disabled people. For too long, policy choices have disproportionately impacted the lives of disabled people in the South.
The Biden Administration failed disabled people with their new CDC guidance. We are in the midst of the largest mass disabling event in decades—over 22 million newly disabled people, with a huge portion of those folks living in the South.
Today, as we celebrate the anniversary of the ADA, we also have to recognize where it falls short. Disabled people deserve to vote freely, fairly, and independently, but enemies of democracy have made that harder to achieve. We have to keep fighting for more.

We are offering one time payments to folks in the South who are impacted by Hurricane Helene. Please go to for more information and to request support. And please share!
New Disabled South announced its support for the LaTonya Reeves Freedom Act, which paves the way for disabled Americans to exercise their right to receive long-term care in their community and flourish independently.
A disabled

🚨EMERGENCY CALL TO ACTION:
Call Delalb County Jail at (404) 298-8195 and demand that they release Adele MacLean. They still do not have their leg braces and have been held in solitary confinement. The bond was paid at 10 am? Their excuse...a fingerprinting issue? Bullshit.
As we celebrate Disability Pride Month, and the upcoming 33rd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, we're using the hashtag
#ADAFloorNotCeiling
all month to remind folks that the ADA was just the beginning. Disabled people deserve more.
Happy New Year to our disabled community. In 2023, we’ll demand more for our people in the South and hold those in power accountable. We hope you’ll join us.
It's time that disabled people get care in their homes instead of institutions. It's time that care workers get paid living wages. We can finally get this done.

Today we honor
#Juneteenth
with a reminder that we can’t have disability justice without racial justice. Disabled people won’t be liberated until all Black people are liberated. Our region’s stained legacy of enslavement and oppression continues on, and we fight to dismantle it.
Throughout the South right now, there are a number of bills that would expand private school voucher programs under the guise of “school choice.” Like
#SB233
in Georgia or the PRICE Act in Alabama.
But students with disabilities don’t have a choice.
A 🧵:
Trans health care is a disability justice issue. We are fully opposed to SB140 in Georgia and any legislation in the South that limits access to gender-affirming care for trans people, no matter their age.
The Senate Health and Human Services Committee just voted 10-4 to pass
#SB140
out of committee despite clear evidence that the bill is unconstitutional and overwhelming opposition from parents, advocates, grandparents, and Trans Georgians.
We’re hiring for a Field Organizer - Labor Rights, Tech, and Disability!

Hydeia Broadbent spent her life in HIV and AIDS activism—raising awareness, fighting to eliminate stigmas that surround it, and educating people on the reality of life with the AIDS. Broadbent's work began at the age of 6, and she never, ever stopped fighting. Rest in power.
Today we wanted to uplift the 10 Principles of Disability Justice. This framework was developed by Patty Berne, Mia Mingus, and Stacey Milburn, and it is something we follow every day in the work we do. [continued in comments]
Today we acknowledge

•Celebrate disabled lives every day
•We don’t exist to inspire you
•Collective liberation is the goal
•Our ability to produce within an oppressive system does not determine our worth
•Nothing about us without us
Georgia has over 7k disabled people on a waiting list to receive care in their homes instead of in institutions, and across our states, that number is over half a million total. We’ll be fighting in Georgia and across the South to get these wait lists fully funded.

We’ll be introducing you to our team in the coming weeks, but right now we want to highlight our Advisory Council! We’re thrilled to have these disabled and nondisabled leaders working alongside us for disability justice in the South. Here they are in alphabetical order.
Disabled kids need support and care in their communities, but instead those in the foster system are too often put in institutions. It’s time to get rid of these systems that harm children with disabilities.
Disability Voting Rights Week exists because our community faces significant barriers to democracy. Disabled voters deserve to participate fully in elections, full stop.
Today, we placed a full page ad in the
@ajc
telling Georgians that our government can afford to fund the 7k+ waiting list for home and community-based services.
We’ll be holding a press conference at the Capitol in just a little bit, and we’ll be testifying this afternoon.
LGBTQ+ folks deserve to be safe wherever they go, but especially in queer spaces like Club Q.
We have to stop normalizing mass death in this country. It’s long past time to do what the vast majority of Americans want and stop gun violence.

The Georgia Court of Appeals essentially decided that the ADA doesn't count for state employees, citing the 11th amendment. This is a dangerous precedent for disabled GA govt workers.
The ADA is federal law.
Thankful every single day for our disabled elders and ancestors, the ones who taught us to be proudly and unapologetically interdependent, for a vision of liberation for all disabled people thriving in community and not alone in institutions.
The 33rd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act is coming up on July 26th. We know that the ADA was always just the beginning, but we want to hear from you—why do you think the ADA is the floor, not the ceiling? Tell us your story!

Here we are once more, commenting on a mass shooting in the U.S., and more specifically in the South. This time, it's Atlanta—where our organization is based. Gun violence is a disability issue. It is an issue we should all care about.

What’s very dangerous to others is making a generalization about a disability that looks different for different people.

in Georgia would outlaw ballot drop boxes. Drop boxes make voting more accessible for many disabled voters. Disabled voters face enough barriers as it stands, and now this makes it even more difficult for our community to vote freely and independently.
"The truth: the ADA, passed on July 26, 1990, isn’t enough to defeat ableism—and it never has been."

Interesting that
@Disney
scored a 100% on
@DisabilityIN
's 2022 Disability Equality Index and was named a top place to work for disability inclusion, yet they actively discriminated against a disabled worker in Florida.
Yesterday we held a press conference at the Georgia Capitol urging our lawmakers to both fund the waiting list of over 7k Georgians with disabilities waiting for home and community-based services, and give our care providers a pay raise. This is a solvable crisis.

TW: Policing and incarceration of Black autistic youth
An all too common experience that disabled young people of color face, especially in the South. Corruption, racism, and ableism at play. None of these systems keep people safe, and there is no reforming them.
Can't sleep. Watching my child sleep with gratitude. He was swatted by someone and Southaven police arrested, handcuffed and put him in juvenile detention for three days. I am LIVID. We've hired lawyers. The police had NO EVIDENCE. The judge that verbally ok'd the arrest warrant

Today, the city of Atlanta confirmed they plan to use exact match as part of their verification process for petitions to get

We need a reenergized movement in the South. We need to hold those in power accountable for disabled death. We need to tear down the structures and systems that harm disabled people and imagine a world where we can be free from institutionalization, poverty, and oppression.
Our very own Dom Kelly and our Comms Director Sean Kelly were recently on the excellent Proud Stutter podcast! They talk about about the work NDS is doing across the South, growing up with stutters and cerebral palsy, and more. Check it out wherever you get your podcasts!

the deprioritization of affordable and accessible health care by those in power, and more, disabled people – particularly those who are multiply marginalized – are literally fighting for their lives, all in the middle of this ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Georgians deserve healthcare regardless of their ability to work. Work requirements only make it more difficult.
Full Medicaid expansion is a must in Georgia and the 7 other Southern states that have yet to take this life-saving action.
Police in Knoxville, TN accused a disabled woman of faking, treated like a rag doll, and mercilessly mocked her while she was actively suffering a stroke. She died in custody.
Police don’t keep disabled people safe. Knoxville police killed Lisa Edwards.
The TLDR is that disabled students don’t benefit from voucher programs, and private schools are often able to discriminate against them with no repercussions. They don’t have to follow federal law, and they don’t have to accommodate students’ individual needs.
Whether it’s the been through the perpetuation of systemic racism, ableism, misogyny, homophobia, and anti-trans violence by state & local lawmakers, the destruction of coastal Southern towns due to a lack of action on climate change, the construction of new barriers to voting,
Far too many Disabled people have died from the Biden administration‘s COVID policy already, primarily Black and brown disabled people, and this new guidance doubles down on eugenics.
Not our Paxlovid nor our sick days nor our disability insurance or long term in-home care.
Disabled people are fighting for our lives, and the Biden Administration is killing us.
