The truth remains: America cannot be great without being good. It's time to reset national aspirations in order to save democracy.
My talk on American patriotism is featured today on
@TEDTalks
. Take a look:
Don’t you dare,
@jeffsessions
.
In 1985, when I defended 3 black civil rights leaders you brought false “voter fraud” charges against, I knew then what I know now— you stand for nothing Dr. King stood for.
Don’t forget: we won the case. And we’ll never stop fighting for justice.
Today, we honor Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy. "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

Thank you
@chrisevans
and
@markkassen
for inviting me to speak with the
@ASP
community about what to expect, and look forward to, as the Biden administration gears up.
Watch our conversation here:
In a spirit of profound gratitude for all the country has given to me, with a determination to build a better, more sustainable, more inclusive American Dream for everyone:
I am today announcing my candidacy for President of the United States.
America needs a unifying and experienced leader, who can and wants to make life better for everyone everywhere.
@JoeBiden
is that leader.
I know that from experience, more than can fit in a tweet:
Yesterday the nation saw an entitled, belligerent judge who is credibly accused of sexual assault, cite partisan conspiracy theories without a shred of evidence. Today, the GOP put him forward for confirmation. You can change this. Vote Nov. 6.
I am so proud of my friend
@ewarren
. She and her team drove an energized, disciplined, and important campaign committed to big ideas, grassroots organizing, and fighting for what you believe in. We need her leadership to win - - and to deliver real change when we do.
In January 2009, at a dinner for Obama’s first Inauguration, I was seated with
@SenJohnMcCain
, who was there to show respect for the man who had won the contest he had fought. America lost that kind of statesman yesterday and we are poorer for it.
We can’t miss this moment— because failing to engage risks losing a whole lot more than an election in November. Today, we’re suspending our campaign, but not giving up the fight. Read my full statement:
One candidate is calling the results into question because he apparently didn’t do well. Another is declaring victory without any votes being confirmed. The way to beat Donald Trump isn’t to act like Donald Trump. Our party and our country deserve better.
The attempt to silence voters in Georgia, and especially black voters, is a cynical attempt to engineer the outcome. Instances like this are why we must turn out in force in November. We deserve better government, let’s go get it.
.
@harrisonjaime
understands that while there is no substitute for personal grit and determination, government — through good schools, adequate housing, healthcare you can depend on, and an expanding economy — has a role to play in helping people help themselves.
It’s hard to think of another American who did more to challenge America to face her demons, to be her best self, and to respect the dignity in every living soul. John Lewis was a man of conscience, when the world was watching and when it wasn’t.
Through
@FacesOfCOVID
, my friend
@alexjgoldstein
has created a remarkable platform to help us all remember those who lost their lives to COVID and honor their amazing stories. Worth a read:
Tonight, America will not see herself in full on the debate stage, but we must ensure issues facing people of color stay in the forefront as we address our future. Democrats cannot win in November without voters of color, and more importantly, neither can America. Full statement:
Proud to have spent the last few days out in Jackson, Mississippi talking to folks about electing
@MikeEspyMS
as their next Senator.
MS voters are ready for their leaders to be a working voice for them in office — and I know, without a doubt, that Mike is up for the job.
I hope that
@SenKamalaHarris
will have a long and productive career in public service. We are better, as a Party and as a Nation, with her talent, her dedication, and her voice in the public square. I look forward to working with her in the years ahead.
No matter where I go, the message on the ground is clear: voters are ready for a change. Make sure we get the democracy we deserve — make a plan to vote on November 6th.
I recognize what
@MayorWu
is dealing with. We’ve learned to shout our anger and whisper our kindness. It’s upside down — and the times call on us to reverse it.
Whether it’s behind closed doors or screaming it from the rooftops— every candidate in this race needs to say it out loud: women and people of color can win. To say otherwise expresses a lack of faith in the American people who deserve more from their leaders.
Congratulations to our new Sec. of Transportation
@PeteButtigieg
. Your outlook on our nation's infrastructure as a generational opportunity to create jobs, work toward racial and economic inequality, and fight climate change is exactly what our country needs to build back better.
10 years.
It feels like forever ago, but it also feels just like yesterday. Boston Strong, to me, is the strength of turning to one another, not on one another. That’s the best of us, that’s the best of Boston, and that’s how we honor those we lost in 2013 on
#OneBostonDay
.
Tomorrow’s the day! The people of Mississippi get to shape their future instead of just reminisce about their past. From Hattiesburg to Jackson I saw first-hand the leader that
@espyforsenate
will be for all Mississippians. For a brighter future, vote Espy.
.
@CoryBooker
is a trail blazer and truth teller, and is one of the most important voices in our country. I love and respect him, and I congratulate him on running a meaningful and joyful campaign.
We need leadership that brings us TO each other rather than sets us ON each other. Leadership that encourages us to see our stake IN each other.
That’s the kind of leadership that is going to bring our country back together.
This week, the U.S. surpassed 500,000 deaths from COVID-19. As we commit to doing everything we can to end this pandemic, let’s honor the lives of families, friends, and loved ones lost.
@FacesofCOVID
motivates us to fight in their memory.
The U.S. death toll from

has topped 500,000, more than any other nation on Earth, according to

Joe has always been an advocate for the people of Massachusetts who were far too often overlooked. His voice and leadership in Congress will be missed.
Thank you for your service.
The race has lost an important voice and a strong representative for justice. I am grateful to Secretary
@JulianCastro
for his leadership and commitment to fighting for our nation’s most vulnerable. We’re a stronger party for it.
We seem to migrating to having one camp, nostalgia: getting rid of the incumbent president and then doing what we used to do, and another camp: "It's our big idea or no way."
Neither of those seizes the moment to pull the nation together.
Today marks four weeks until Election Day, and if I've learned one thing from my travels over the past few weeks it's in spite of our politics, our communities are still strong. We deserve a stronger and fairer democracy — but we won't get one unless we vote on November 6.
Grateful & honored to have
@DevalPatrick
's support in this race! His legacy of bringing people together in politics & public service is an inspiration—opening the doors for a new generation to lead.
The symbol of the Confederacy was hijacked long ago. It was hijacked by people who tried to make it into something other than a symbol of slavery, white supremacy, and rebellion.
If we want to make change that lasts, we need to invest in everyone, everywhere. There’s still time to make a difference in one of the first important 2020 races in Texas. Let’s send
@ElizMarkowitz
to the State House:
When it comes to political talent, Massachusetts has an abundance of riches.
@EdMarkey
and
@JoeKennedy
are extraordinary public servants and bright lights among Democrats.
Congratulations to Ed on his win and to Joe on a hard fought race.
I was set to announce my run for President in 2018— and then my wife got diagnosed with cancer. I knew being there for her was far more important than political aspirations.
She’s well now, and I’m so proud we’re doing this together. Love you, Diane.
I enjoyed sitting with my friend
@davidaxelrod
for
#axefiles
and talking substance. The character of our country is on the ballot this Nov. None of us can afford to sit it out.
I have a lot to be thankful for today.
When we embarked on this journey, I asked for your time, energy, and support as we fight for a better American Dream for all.
I’ve been blown away by this grassroots team’s commitment.
Wishing you and your family a happy Thanksgiving.
Look who’s running for governor of South Carolina — my friend Joe Cunningham, whose races for Congress I worked on. A very good dude with a serious mind on climate change and climate justice.
I’m running for Governor of South Carolina because the challenges we face aren’t because of our people, they’re because of our politicians.
It's time to change that. Join me.
Had a chance to visit Birmingham, AL to help get out the vote with my friend,
@DougJones
and his wife Louise. We need him to keep on fighting for a more prosperous society for all Alabamans and Americans.
In just 2 days, let's vote for leaders like Sen. Jones.
#OneAlabama
My grandmother used to say that we weren't poor, just broke, because broke was temporary. Like so many others, we used food stamps at times. This cruel move by the Trump administration just makes it harder for families to get on their feet and for kids to succeed.
Just in time for the holidays: the Dept of Agriculture has finalized a process whereby 755,000 Americans will be removed from the federal food stamp program. Secretary Purdue says it's an effort towards "self sufficiency," and is the first step of many to cut food assistance.
People are looking for revolutionary change — and revolutionary change they shall have. We've been waiting for it for a long time. But in this moment of anger and anxiety, we have to seize the opportunity to use systematic change as a way to bring us back together.
My roots in Kentucky run deep— as a descendant of an enslaved Kentuckian and a slave holder.
Now, I’m on the ballot as a candidate for President of the United States in Kentucky.
We rise together.
Not one question about racism in tonight’s debate. Not one.
Let’s face reality. Racism is not all there is to talk about, but when millions of Americans deal with it daily, encouraged by our president, when do we face their truths?
I didn’t discover injustice just lately. I lived it, I fought against it, and I won.
We need to offer the American people a proposal that doesn’t just help them get even. We need to offer them one that helps them get better.
This weekend I'm heading to Georgia to support

Headlines about wine caves are besides the point. If we are going to unite the country, then we need to focus on what the real problems are and how we make the American Dream possible for everyone, everywhere.
Yesterday was better than the day before. Control of the House is now in responsible hands. And many of those hands are black and brown hands, women’s hands, the hands of servant leaders. That’s historic and that’s good for America.
Wishing the happiest of birthdays to President-elect
@JoeBiden
. Diane and I are forever grateful for your kindness, sincerity, and compassionate leadership.
NEW: Trump told his Mar-a-Lago buddies to expect ‘big’ Iran action days before the Soleimani hit.
In other words, randos at Trump's club knew more about the strike before members of Congress.

With just 23 days til Election Day, it’s all hands on deck. Get out and knock doors or make calls for progressive leaders like
@LucyWins2018
— our democracy is on the line.
“So the question facing us is: with the year gone by having revealed what it revealed, do we find the gumption to seize what may be the greatest chance to change things in our lifetime?”
You are so right,
@AnandWrites
— the opportunity is before us, right now. Let's seize it.
I’d like to express my gratitude to those in the Senate who voted to convict based on their conscience and an old-fashioned sense of duty— especially people like Doug Jones and Mitt Romney, who did so despite the conventional political wisdom.
People across the country are taking their anger and disappointment with the week’s events and turning it into action. It’s clear here in New Jersey’s 4th District, where I had the pleasure of meeting with Women for
@JoshuaWelle
supporters this morning.
So proud to see how
@alexjgoldstein
, after all these years, has kept his heart so open for so many. Beautiful story about a beautiful reminder of the power of kindness.
FACES OF COVID: For more than two years, Alex Goldstein has been memorializing the lives of COVID victims nearly every day on the account
@FacesOfCOVID
.
He says he hopes the account encourages people “to stop just for a minute and bear witness and look.”
Today’s the day! Go to the polls, remind everyone you know to go to the polls, & vote for candidates who know we have a stake in the dreams and struggles of our neighbors as much as our own — and remember to thank the poll workers who dedicate their time to our democracy!

Happy birthday to a true visionary, empathetic leader, and our new DNC chair,
@harrisonjaime
. Hope your day is wonderful, friend. Thank you for everything you do.
Last week, I had the privilege of talking to
@cmclymer
about the work that needs to be done to protect and expand LGBTQ+ rights.
Most imminently, that means voting out the current administration.
We cannot afford to let this moment pass. We stand at a crossroads where we must choose the sort of nation that America will be. I believe America at her generous best stands above hate and division and delivers on our promises for everyone.
Thank you
@VanJones68
for the great discussion today about how to create an opportunity agenda for all Americans.

As Governor of MA, I recognized that I was Governor for every person who lived in MA, not just those who voted for me or who agreed with me. Gov. DeSantis should recognize he holds the same responsibilities, and fight for all Floridians’ voices to be heard.
#LetUsVoteFL
Q1: Over 5 million people voted for
#Amendment4
to restore voting rights for 1.4 million Floridians. But
@RonDeSantisFL
keeps appealing it, & a judge said he’s “trying to run out the clock” for the 2020 election. Why do you think he continues to block the law?

This election is about the conscience of our democracy, and we can’t afford to sit it out. Check if you’re registered, and get informed before November 6:
I'm late to the commentary here — who ever said Twitter was just for instant response? — but I was moved and inspired by Tuesday's primary results in Massachusetts.
I first heard Dr. King when I was 7 or 8 years old, in a park on the South Side of Chicago, not far from where I grew up. I met Mrs. King a number of times, when I was all grown up and practicing civil rights law. I know, as we all do, that they both loved American ideals.
If we're going to unite the country, then we need to focus on what the real problems are— not wine caves. The issue isn’t wealth. It's greed. We have a system that enables people to hoard all of the better benefits among the few, and that needs to change.
This week, I had the privilege of meeting with
@Carolyn4GA7
and voters in her district. Carolyn has spent her life working to create public services and policies that truly help and protect the people — friends in
#GA07
, we need a leader like Carolyn Bourdeaux in Congress.
As a former assistant Attorney General, I know that Merrick Garland is the right person to restore our justice system. He will lead the charge to amend the consequences of the outgoing administration and build a justice system that serves the people, not the President.
Thank you to so many who came out to our Exeter Town Hall in New Hampshire yesterday.
This time, it's not about the character of the candidates— it's about the character of the country. And you get to decide.
Today I’m hitting the road in North Carolina’s 9th district to help get out the vote for
@McCreadyForNC
. Voters are ready to put country over party — and that’s what Dan is doing.
Dr. King and his allies didn’t fight and die for the right to vote for us to sit idly by and wait for someone else to save us.
No one is coming to save us, but us.
We have learned to shout our anger and whisper our kindness — and it’s exactly upside down. We must learn again to shout kindness. Thank you
@NHYoungDems
for having me.
One year ago, 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery was murdered by three white men in a senseless act of violence. We must remember his story, and so many others like it, as we build a society that upholds the dignity of Black lives and is free of white supremacy.
With Senator Alexander’s decision, Senate Republicans got what they wanted: a chance to punt yet again on this president’s lawlessness.
As usual, beltway insiders see corruption, choose to look the other way, and hope no one remembers at election time.
We won’t forget.
President Trump’s commutation of his friend Roger Stone is about what I have come to expect. Trump is perhaps the most lawless president in American history. For anyone still in doubt, in Trump world it pays to have friends in high places. America has to do better than that.
Tomorrow, Americans head to the polls. Make sure you know where to vote, and have a plan to get there. This election is about the conscience of our country — we can’t afford to sit it out.
#ElectionDay
I’ve spent the last few months traveling across the country and listening to concerned voters. The problems we face are big, but we’re all ready for big solutions.
In America, we have been losing sight of some basic truths, namely: that we have a stake in each other’s dreams and struggles, as well as our own; and that we each owe a responsibility to leave things better for those who come behind us.
That’s why I started
