Did you know Bermingham slang for ‘good bye’ ‘Ta ra’, originates from Irish immigrants who said ‘tabhair aire’ to each other, which translates to ‘take care’.. the locals picked up on it and shortened it to ‘ta ra’. A fine example of how our languages are so intertwined

Language learning is not a linear process you don’t go from beginner to Intermediate- advanced in that order. E.g I consider myself tipping towards advanced yet there is still material that I’m covering from beginner level. We are constantly looping around in this way.

I love the language learning community here on Twitter. But I do notice many of the well known Language accounts, whose content I love, just don’t follow people back. They have endless numbers of followers but are following very few themselves. What’s that about?

Learning a language to fluency comes from a bedrock of absolute blind optimism. It doesn’t matter, how much you struggle, how often you forget the simplest of phrases, just keep on keeping on and one day you’ll realise your holding your own in conversation with very little effort

canceled my sons barber appt for the 2nd time in a week because he’s sick. Each time no charge incurred from La Figaro Limerick. How accommodating is that given difficulties that business must have faced through Covid. They’ll be getting a big box of chocolates as a ‘thank you’.

I’ve noticed the closer I come to fluency, C2 level, the rate at which I learn and acquire the language is accelerating day by day. It’s a very surprising phenomenon, capacity to take in and retain is getting larger by the minute. Very satisfying place to be.

Irish was supposed to be a new hobby for me. It became a new way of life instead. I’m turning 37 next week. I have 2 kids and a job. I’m starting my MA in Irish studies in October. Fun times ahead. 😁

Im so struggling with this, over the last few weeks I’ve heard people I know justify why a grown man was tipped over the edge into savagely beating a child, how he is otherwise a good person - I’m so sickened, and I will never stop speaking out about it.

Very proud of the teenager who is really starting to develop an interest in language learning. He’s enjoyed French well enough since starting in secondary. But now he’s asking me for YouTube recommendations and has just listened to episode 1 of Hugo’s podcast ‘InnerFrench”

Restricted the teenagers screen time through parental controls to 2hours a day. This is either going to be the best thing we ever did, or an absolute shitstorm. Fingers crossed for us.

I fixed lots of painful attacks of gall bladder through Keto, Doctor reckoned high fat diet would make it worse, it’s been the opposite. It’s carbs breaking down to sugars, that’s the real issue for gall bladder

There are many people out there, who have often thought that they’d love to speak another language, but have resigned themselves to thinking that it’s not possible. To those people I’d say, try it, start learning, it really becomes a fantastic hobby, & it’s very achievable 😊🙏

You’re not going to get fluent using Duolingo as your primary language learning tool. As a support tool fine, but your main source has really got to to be large input through reading, listening, youtube, and Netflix. And output -communicating.

Keep at the gentle parenting, it’s a long term investment & you will reap the rewards. We took this approach when my son was smaller & we were struggling he’s a wonderful boy and now as a 15yr old we have a really good relationship, he’s absolutely rock solid and we are so proud

If we lived in the world that really wanted change, we would never see a convicted child rapist competing at the Olympic Games, treated as a role model in just a few days.
If every athlete refused to compete until this person was removed, he would be sent home tomorrow.

Language learning has so many dimensions and levels. Once you’re hooked the very passion it stirs up, milestones surpassed, goals achieved changes the way we view ourselves, it helped me deal with anxiety, it becomes part of you..and now I couldn’t be without it.. ❤️ languages

During the civil war, my grandfather as a 15 yr old walked from Limerick to Adare to fight for the anti treaty side. Approaching Adare he met an older soldier who told him to go home he was too young, my gf wouldn’t. This Soldier then engaged the boy with running various messages

I had a meltdown here a few weeks ago, I shouldn’t have let it come to that, but I did. Teenager now washes all his own clothes, if he can’t find stuff or it’s not clean it’s nothing to do with me anymore. It’s good for him & it’s good for me.
