Not only was Akron’s own Fritz Pollard one of the very first Black players in Pro Football (prior to the NFL), he also was the first Black Coach. He played and coached for the Akron Pros back in the 1920s. #BlackHistoryMonth

Dorothy Jackson was Akron’s first Black, female Deputy Mayor, appointed to the cabinet in 1984. Prior to that Jackson advocated for Akron’s disadvantaged residents at the Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority. #BlackHistoryMonth

Edward D. Irvine joined the Akron Police Department in 1963. Over a 40+ year career, Irvine worked his way through the ranks, becoming Akron’s first Black Chief of Police in 1996. #BlackHistoryMonth

This week, we announced that the City of Akron plans to plant 1,800 trees as part of the street tree program in 2025! The city is budgeting $750,000 towards this effort. Learn more:

Sylvester Small was the first Black Superintendent of Akron Public Schools in 2001. Small was dedicated to ensuring the academic success of Akron’s kids. #BlackHistoryMonth
