“why is manga outselling american comics in lgbt spaces, despite a push for diversity?” cus i can read dozens of volumes of textual gay stories in manga and DC takes seven years to release four pages of some random white boy smiling at another w the chemistry of a wooden plank
Personally, I feel like we need to start shifting the conversation from “we need diverse stories because we need to balance representation” to “narratives from marginalized folk have inherent value, not tied to their ability as a mirror or a category”
If your character design course doesn’t talk abt which racial caricatures to avoid, then you’re failing your students. If your animation course doesn’t cover minstrelsy, then you’re failing your students. It’s not enough to be just “not racist”, we need to be anti-racist.
Creators, especially those of us who deal with comics/creative IPs: work it into your contracts now, have clauses that say you do not want your work now or ever to be used in cryptocurrency-based transactions
PSA cause I know a lot of artists follow me: buy this book!!!! ask for it for christmas! request it at your library!!!! bodies are not abstract imaginings of your own fear of becoming fat!
I’m sorry but the whale winning for a fat suit that is literally incorrect with depicting how the body distributes weight is so embarrassing. Like you all should be fined $500 for wasting my goddamn time
Pls don’t believe anything a crypto company tells u abt environmental work they’re gonna do, that work takes 5-20 years to execute, while these companies are built to profit, get flipped, and sold within a few years, and that new board of doesn’t give a shit what the website said
Cannot think of a better example to show that prioritizing fictional character “representation” in the mainstream truly ain’t shit. Capitalism will always be compliant with whatever is profitable, regardless of morals.
Never have i been able to recognize the power of artwork more than back in school, seeing my character design classes reaction to my concept of “Dog, but with human legs”

Hi all, I want to contribute something useful regarding folks speaking up about the current Palestinian genocide, so i’m going to do a quick thread on how to protect yourself as a contractor/worker so you can voice your opinions and avoid firing or losing money. 🧵🪡
Way too many ppl don’t realize 1. what a full buyout means, and 2. that huge media companies do not manage their budgets like regular folks lol, trust us when we say that the value of this is genuinely +15k and accepting lower is not just bad for deb, but ALL artists
I noticed that a lot of my friends this year had the resolution to get into reading, and as someone who managed to do this pretty successfully last year, I thought it might be fun to share some tips!
Nothing to promote except I would love for someone to watch Cowboy Bebop episode 11 “Toys in the Attic” then talk to me about how it’s one of the best episodes of anything ever. Even if you’ve never seen Cowboy Bebop please just watch that episode.
This thread hits on a problem i keep seeing again and again, and i know that i’ve tweeted this before but: If a “zine” organizer is paying for professional printing, they should be paying you a professional wage.
No, you weren’t deemed “Bad online” were accused of being racist in both personal and professional contexts and you actively alienated Black women from community spaces you helped create.
I’m sorry but the whale winning for a fat suit that is literally incorrect with depicting how the body distributes weight is so embarrassing. Like you all should be fined $500 for wasting my goddamn time
If you are an artist willingly endorsing or participating in crypto-art and NFT, I will not work with you in any professional space and you are not welcome in any of my circles.
I’m not an expert, but I’m really afraid of when capitalism decides that the “gay narrative” isn’t marketable anymore, and I would rather not use identities as “oh but wait, there’s more!” hooks
Friendly-to-hostile reminder to any editors, ADs, or folks in hiring positions out there: Now is not the time to post “We wanna hire more AAPI artists, please reply with your portfolio!”
It’s exhausting, dehumanizing, and ya’ll never follow through. Do your own damn job.
my fav book i read recently is this japanese indie book “Astral Season, Beastly Season” by Tahi Saitate, abt how two teens are massive fans of an underground jpop idol, and after she’s charged with grisly murder they try to pin the crime on themselves.
1. This is an incorrect headline. it’s describing the direct market comic industry not graphic novels, and the data excludes online metrics (its using units sold). Their numbers of 15mil vs 10mil “total” is completely incorrect.
2. Stop promoting an article pushing this agenda
Happy Sunday everyone, it’s time to think about the Dior fall 11/12 show inspired by The Memphis Group, a design style described as “bauhaus meets fisher price”
I’m glad that Scott Campbell has become twitters main character today by showing his whole ass through digging up this mess from years ago, but personally I’m still stuck on this massively offensive cover he made for DC comics -checks watch- in 2021

you know, the love languages, acts of service, quality time, physical touch, wordlessly sending links to ppl like a crow leaving a gift on the windowsill,
There are many conversations around the Eisner-nominated comic by Thomas Woodruff, but it is not a grey area: The book is explicitly racist and fetishistic of cultures that that the white author has no right to comment on, and thus should be excluded from any and all awards.
Also, literally no subtweet implied to ppl, esp in publishing and animation, who are actually marginalized and using this tactic to hustle and fix things. Ya’ll keep being heroes
Hi you should be asking for longer deadlines but also remember that this also falls under the umbrella of “what an agent does”. It’s our responsibility to uphold your choices and advocate for you. The responsibility of the artist is to draw the book, we try to make it easier.
@EthanMAldridge
i keep thinking about how recently a drag performer introduced themselves to the crowd w “Ladies, gentlemen, and those of us that know better,”
“There’s too much of X in popular culture” “there’s not enough Y in media” “Everything these days is-“
I wouldn’t know, i have become an expert in curating my life to only watch and consume things that creatively excite me and I highly suggest you do the same
A letter to the MICA illustration department, signed by over 200 former illustration students from the classes of 1996-2020.
In the full letter there are over fourteen pages of statements and testemonials from former students.
This must end here and now.
I have no idea what kind of pricetag all this nft business has other than it’s BIG, and corporations do not practice awareness of environmental or sociological impact (fun quirks of capitalism). They aren’t on social media, they are just being sold something
The way some ppl are treating hashtag ownvoices is really harkening back to the “list all your mental illnesses and traumas in your tumblr bio” kind of days lol
It's stressful to be in such a discourse-laden community, esp wrt hopeless feelings on ai art and being paid your worth feel so personal, but consider: NFTs are now little more that a hack graveyard, and that's because of our efforts as a community. Confrontation brings results.
Hey. Most folks on here know me as a literary agent, but I also had aday job i was very happy at. I was a DE at comixology, and today, while i’m on personal leave to deal with family matters in Argentina, i was notified that me, and the whole company, are being laid off.
🥳 Guess what my New Years resolution is!!! 🎉

Sometimes im like “it’s fine that most high fashion is unattainable and wouldn’t even fit me if i could buy it, i appreciate it as art that compliments a body, even if it isn’t mine” then i see a look that i want to wear so badly I Could Die

Crypto is built on marketing scam after marketing scam, because every participant knows that the only way to keep this from crashing is to keep lying to people about a heartlessly needless act. No respect for those who chose to buy into this.
@MadyGComics
Yeah! i think that like, manga def has issues, but the range and variation of stories allows for there to almost always have a story that represents an experience, while direct market is painfully procedural
As someone who adores manga and owes most of my creative life to it: We need to reassess the manga magazine system. it is an abusive labor practice that banks on exposure and overwork to martyr it’s creator over a blockbuster story.
No, no, hell no, holy sh*t no, NO.
The “Shonen Jump System” is a prime example of what’s wrong in creative industries, and especially manga. NO ONE should be burning themselves out and sacrificing their health because “I could be dropped at any moment if I’m not popular.”
isnt it wild how one of the main arguments for N/FTs is retaining “ownership” of your artwork, yet they’re out here stealing like some no-talent deviantart scammer in 2005
There’s tons of reasons for why it’s important to credit an artist, even for a commercial job like a book cover, but abstractly it hits on art’s modern crisis of separating work from creator. It deprives both the audience and maker the tools to continue a visual conversation.
@safifesse
the fact that they left two off but they are also..... blonde and brunette white thin girls....... we really need stop leaving gay stories up to white ppl lmao
you know what does “fix” things? listening, apologizing, investing time and money into learning how to be anti-racist, and DECENTERING YOUR OWN VICTIMHOOD. Don’t act confused when people decide you don’t deserve forgiveness!
Folks keep disagreeing with this statement to try to sanitize the romantic ideal of “working in comics”, but have they considered that this is a real and fixable problem??? It is not impossible to change the industry!

Listen to your friends before politicians, practice solidarity with your community before patriotism, and don’t congratulate yourself before you’ve helped those who need it most. This isn’t an endorsement for austerity, but just try to seek joy from somewhere other than politics
