Clara B. Williams college professors did not allow her inside the classroom because she was Black. But that didn’t stop her. She took notes from the hallway–standing up! She eventually graduated at the age of 51 and lived to 108 years old and saw her 3 sons become doctors.

In 1959, police were called to a segregated library when a Black 9-year-old boy trying to check out books refused to leave, after being told the library was not for Black people. The boy, Ronald McNair, went on to became an astronaut. The library is also now named after him.

Did you know Cornrows were used to help slaves escape slavery? Slaves used cornrows to transfer and create maps to leave plantations. It is most documented in Colombia where Benkos Bioho, came up with the idea to have women create maps & deliver messages through their cornrows.

This is Charles & Willa Bruce. In 1912 they bought prime beachfront land in Manhattan Beach, LA County and built a Black resort community. In 1924 the county took it and refused to pay its value. In 2021, worth $72 million, it was returned to their descendents by Senate Bill 796.

On this day in 1921, The Tulsa Race Massacre happened in the affluent black community of Greenwood in Tulsa known as the Black Wall Street. White supremacists killed more than 300 African Americans. They looted and burned to ground black homes and businesses.

In Louisiana, black women were put in cells with male prisoners and some became pregnant. All children born in the penitentiary to blacks were property of the state. At 10 years, they would be auctioned off. The proceeds were used to fund schools for white children. -THREAD-
