Peter Thiel, co-founder of PayPal and one of the largest individual donors in US politics, just referred to Greta Thunberg as part of the “autistic children’s brigade” in his Oxford address.
A thread about Parliament, power and photo ops.
When I was 20, I visited Parliament with a group of young women advocating for gender equality.
We were told we would meet Scott Morrison. We waited next to groups of school kids. He went around the circle posing with each group.
With a bit of negotiation, the letter was never sent. They didn’t even care to have it. They just wanted me to write it.
I think about that moment to this day. I remember how scared and embarrassed I was. I thought I let everyone down.
That’s just the tip of the iceberg.
I have been awarded the Rhodes Scholarship for 2021.
I’m heading to Oxford to study intersectional gender equality policy.
As an Asian-Australian woman from a low-income background, I am so determined to shift the barriers that diverse women face.
Sebuah pesan untuk masyarakat Indonesia dari Menteri Luar Negeri yang baru Australia Penny Wong
@SenatorWong
, dalam kunjungan resmi pertamanya ke Jakarta dengan Perdana Menteri yang baru Anthony Albanese.
Later, we met with Anthony Albanese. Polar opposite. We sat around a table and discussed our concerns for 30 minutes. He asked us questions and wanted to understand.
Nearing the end, I raised my hand and said “Thank you for not treating us like a photo opportunity.” I meant it.
When asked how she would like her leadership remembered, Jacinda Ardern responded "As someone who always tried to be kind."
She was a bright light amidst the darkness of politics. Her legacy will inspire women and girls for generations. Thank you, Jacinda. ♥️
I was told it would be shown to all Liberal Ministers.
I felt cornered. So I did it. I went to my dorm room and cried.
They cared that much about one tiny comment made by a 20 year old uni student.
Refusing to worship the PM was met with tactics of humiliation and control.
Just extraordinary that Penny Wong, an Asian-Australian, will be our next Foreign Minister.
I really feel like our conversations about engaging with Asia will be different now.
It’s not us versus them. It’s not all about economic ties. Many of us are Asian, forever connected.
He got to us. He asked us if we support the Sharks. Awkward silence. “Guess I’m asking the wrong group,” he said.
A minute later, we stood and smiled for a photo. It felt gross. Everything felt cold, insincere.
There were no media or other politicians in that room. Just us.
Word got out that I made that comment. An hour later, I got a call telling me that a senior Liberal staffer was demanding that I write a letter of apology.
“With a signature”, they specified.
To politicians thanking Brittany for her courage and bravery, let this be the moment where you change the legal system to better support survivors. We don't need thoughts and prayers. We need justice.
When a woman resists, it’s the same old boys club that throws stones.
Young women see you. And believe this - we will not smile for you.
My opinion in The Age.

Thiel was a major donor in Trump’s campaign and has been instrumental in several Republicans being elected.
He worked closely with Musk at PayPal.
He also denied that his donations harm democracy and that “inequality” is not the issue, instead it is innovation “stagnation”.
He specifically praised Nick Bostrom, founder of Future of Humanity Institute for his longtermism theories.
Revealing timing given that last week Bostrom admitted to writing an email in the mid 90s which said that “blacks are more stupid than whites” and the n slur.
Well, the time has finally come. A very bittersweet goodbye to Australia, which I love and has given me so much.
Onwards to the next chapter in Oxford 🇬🇧
So grateful for everyone who has supported and guided me. I’ll be back. ❤️
I can only speak for my experience but this does not feel like a “mild flu” and I am double vaxxed.
The
#LetItRip
approach is devastating. It completely disregards people at risk and exploits our care workforce, female-dominated and paid so little.
I am proud that one of the ICJ judges who voted in favour of preventing genocide was Judge Hilary Charlesworth. An Australian.
The Australian Government has enabled genocide.
Today, I am grateful to see an Australian with integrity refusing to do the same.
An honour to be on Q+A again. Thanks for the beautiful messages. During COVID-19, I’ve been reflecting on a quote by Cynthia Enloe: “In patriarchal hands, urgency is the enemy of feminist investigation”. We cannot let decision makers use this crisis to sideline women’s voices.
The treatment of Yassmin Abdel-Magied traumatised many young woman of colour. It means that many will now pause before they speak out, wondering whether doing so could compromise their safety. Realising that there is an 'invisible line' for how much society can tolerate.
I got to have dinner with
@jacindaardern
at
@BlavatnikSchool
and it was very special. Thank you for showing us what politics could be, and should be. ♥️
This is shameful beyond measure.
I don't know what happened in Andrew Bolt's life to make him so bitter, and why he takes pleasure in hurting other people.
The lower he goes, the more he is rewarded - a perverse circus pony. He represents the very worst of Australian media.
I’m seeing a concerning normalisation of working from home when sick instead of taking the day/days off.
Flexibility is wonderful…but the work/home divide has essentially eroded. If left unchecked it’s a real threat to our hard won labour rights.
New from me: Payman expected to quit the ALP after caucus colleagues reveal she told them she was being guided by god on her Palestine floor crossing decision, shocking her colleagues

'Australia warns Israel’s plans for Rafah ground offensive could have ‘devastating consequences’'
Australia has had countless moments to speak up during this genocide. They were silent. Now they find their voice because the US said it first. Cowardice.
To everybody that has sent me such wonderful, kind messages after
#QandA
- thank you. This experience was a dream come true. At the end of the day, I’m hoping it encourages more youth (esp young women) to take an interest in politics. We need to be part of these conversations!
Seeing posts by other Asian Australians saying the Yes campaign did not do enough to engage with Asian Australian communities.
Respectfully, if you witnessed this happening and said nothing until now - why? The Yes campaign needed your knowledge and ideas. Now it's too late.
I'm a uni student. I can think of several male students that embody Porter's behaviour, yet are also being touted as future leaders. The cycle continues
#qanda
The relevance of Porter’s antics in his youth, in my view, lies in his being promoted & touted, even back then, as someone who would be powerful. His success was never going to be thwarted by errant behaviour ...a pattern that he’s apparently followed since.

Scott Morrison's interruption should be rightly called out, but let's also not ignore how problematic Anne Ruston's response was too. Stating words to the effect of 'Oh, well I've never experienced sexism!' is not only unhelpful, it's disrespectful to the women who came forward
The same politicians who are sad about the Voice referendum failing are silent as a genocide is underway in Gaza.
How can we say that we have changed as a nation and learned from our history if Australia shamefully others countries to do the same?
If Dan Tehan wants to prevent students from failing subjects, invest in improving youth mental health support. Increase welfare permanently so students aren’t breaking their backs trying to make ends meet, especially young carers. Failing is a SYMPTOM, not the problem itself.
@KateEllis22
I was meant to go on an overseas program last year, but I wasn't able to because of the pandemic. The Australian participants scheduled a Melbourne catch up instead. I ended up meeting my (now) partner and the rest is history :) No travel needed!
Congratulations to

who's just been been named Youth Influencer of the Year from the The King Center -which honours the legacy of Martin Luther King Junior.
Really exciting to hear from
@SenSanders
at The Oxford Union and grab his book ‘It’s OK To Be Angry About Capitalism’.
I asked the first audience question: What does it mean that billionaires can buy entire social media platforms? Should we rethink who gets to own the internet?
59 years difference between the inductees in this pic, from oldest to youngest. Feminist strength across generations. ❤️🔥
(there were more of us btw, just not pictured!)
I am so grateful to feminists who have come before me. You opened the space for my generation to advocate.
I also want to acknowledge the young women I have met in this journey, including
@TamePunk
and Brittany Higgins. I have learned so much from you. You inspire me every day.
Our long, long history of white Foreign Ministers have masked our diversity of stories.
This is an opportunity to tell the world about our long history of Asian migration since the Gold Rush. And the incredible contributions and stories since.
The same politicians who are saying nothing about the genocide in Gaza are the same people who will one day talk about a "complex history" and say "never again". Your words are meaningless if you stay silent in moments that matter.

This opens the door to more diversity in our international representation.
As Wong says, an Asian-Australian Foreign Minister shows ‘an independent multicultural Australia confident of our place in the world’.
Last night, we moved closer to that.
I wrote in 2020 that bridging the gap between Australia and Asia should look to Asian-Australians.
Our international image shouldn’t just be beaches and our easy-going attitude. It’s our migration story, the fabric of who we are.
This is a good example of how hard it is for people of colour to point out racism in the workplace. They’re met with “Are you calling ME a racist?!” and a deliberate mischaracterisation of what they are trying to say. Case in point.
Thiel’s Republican donations and Musk’s Twitter acquisition signal that Silicon Valley is not just encroaching on democracy but attempting to control it.
They are both free speech absolutists and criticise the state, but *interestingly* have nothing to say on their own wealth.
Was speaking to a young woman of colour that’s set to present to the Senate Committee regarding diaspora communities. She expressed how scared she was after reading Abetz and Fierravanti-Wells’ appalling comments about Chinese Australians. These words carry impact.
Young women of colour are encouraged to speak out. But if we choose to do so, we're often forced to walk the tightrope of being a model minority - one wrong slip and you're a troublemaker, an intruder. The game isn't fair.
But of course, Bolt is a symptom of a much larger problem. Clicks and views are profit, and some newspapers are so desperate for engagement that they don't care about the damage they inflict along the way.
They wind Bolt up and let him go, like a toy.
It is quite ridiculous that someone who is elected and receiving money from the taxpayer is sitting at their desk, feet up, complaining about the Australian of the Year.
I am committed to challenge, to critique, and to speak honestly. I hope that this will open the door further for other young diverse women to have this opportunity.
I am so grateful and will grasp it with both hands.
This is commitment personified. Sam Kerr, knocked about by the Swedes, injured & hardly noticed by the referee - only to get right back up, and with little hesitation, return to her team. How proud she & the Tillies have done Australia. Just legendary.

I believe that this decision marks a point where the internet changes. It’s not just run by founders - Mark Zuckerberg, Jack Dorsey etc - now it’s starting to be passed into the hands of others. And by others, I mean the ultra elite. The internet cannot evolve into this.
I will always acknowledge this reality, because there are so many young people with extraordinary dreams who are not given the support to thrive. This must be changed.
The road to university wasn’t linear or easy. I remember taking a gap year to save for university, doing the numbers and realising my minimum wage job would not even cover half a year of accommodation.
I was lucky, though. Lucky, because I could live with my family for a couple of years to save money. Lucky that my dreams were supported, not laughed at. Lucky that I found mentors who truly cared.
I spoke to my friend who is a nurse in the public health system. She says that some of her co workers have discussed leaving in frustration.
Many have $50k+ in HECS. They could double their salary in a similar industry like health policy.
We need to RETAIN not just recruit.
This was me on my last day of school. Education is a right, but 222 million children are not receiving an education due to crises like climate change and war.
I'm joining

I finally got to meet

! To those that have told us to sit down, shut up and be quiet - I regret to inform you we have both been named 100 Women of Influence and will only get louder. Sorry (not sorry). 😘
"Be quiet" "irrelevant" "you are stupid". A video of a defensive man lashing out at a woman in order to make himself feel powerful. It's not a case of women having to 'toughen up and deal with it'. This sexism - condescension and aggression - is a reality women face every day.
Tony Abbott criticising Victoria's lockdown approach, suggesting we have become "spiritually poor". On the contrary, I think the decision to prioritise lives shows our commendable compassion for one another. How many lives would be lost if this pandemic was led by Abbott?
