NEW: Boys at an American-run school for troubled teens in Jamaica say they were beaten, forced to do extreme amounts of exercise, and made to hold stress positions for hours at a time

Here's a thread of the 20 politicians who've falsely claimed this year that schools are accommodating who kids identify as cats, putting litter boxes on campus for them
NEW: a group of Moms for Liberty backed school board members were sworn in Tuesday
Within 2 hours, they’d fired the superintendent & the district’s lawyer, banned CRT and set up a committee to determine books to ban for “pornographic content”
A school district near Dallas, Texas ripped down LGBTQ ally symbols, functionally shut down a student newspaper, barred faculty from being part of GSA meetings, and now plans to terminate an openly gay teacher
My new
@nbcnews
story explains what happened
Today I found out that I've been laid off from BuzzFeed News
Anyone hiring a reporter w/ several years experience covering sex assault, crime, issues facing young people, and who knows his way around Nexis, PACER, FOIA, etc; get at me!
I have too many story leads to stop now!
NEW: An Oklahoma school district has had *six* consecutive days of bomb threats
Threats started after Libs of TikTok shared an out of context video of a district librarian, and the state’s top education official retweeted it
Lauren Boebert, Congresswoman:
"They are putting litter boxes in schools for people who identify as cats. Durango is doing this. This is how extreme it is."
(Durango is not doing this)
JUST IN: Okla.'s top edu official Ryan Walters says the state's social studies standards are going to be overhauled by a committee that includes Dennis Prager, David Barton, Steve Deace and Kevin Roberts
Roberts leads the Heritage Foundation, the group behind Project 25
Heidi Ganahl, GOP nominee for Colorado governor:
"they're mute and they don't talk, they growl and meow. it's bizarre. that's an extreme example but it's happening."
Marjorie Taylor Greene, Congresswoman:
"if some student wants to pretend like a cat & use a litter box after school, that's their prerogative, whatever. But no ... school resources and the other students and teachers should not have to be put through that"
Greene: They’re embracing lies. I mean literally embracing lies. If some student wants to pretend like a cat and use a litter box after school, that’s their prerogative
Janice Bowling and Mary Littleton, two Republican members of the Tennessee legislature.
Bowling: "ppl who identify as cats using a litter box in the hallway, that is not good. ... I thank you Rep. Littleton for addressing that growing crisis"
Three minutes of two state lawmakers in Tennessee insisting this week in a hearing that there is a “crisis” of kids identifying as cats and peeing in litter boxes in school hallways “across the state”
"There’s something going on in our schools called 'furry.' I think it's spelled F-U-R-R-Y... I looked it up on Google.”
3 Minnesota GOP State Reps. spread false rumors of litter boxes in bathrooms, uniforms that accommodate tails and kids identifying as cats during floor debate.
NEW from me: An investigation into a school for troubled teens, where girls say they were punished for being gay or bi, pulled off anti-anxiety meds cold turkey, and had their diet limited to peanut-butter sandwiches when they wouldn't cooperate
Nebraska state senator Bruce Bostelman, a Republican
(Note: He's the one example we found of a politician who retracted his statement and admitted he was wrong)
This morning it was brought to my attention that a candidate for the Williamson County School Board is claiming that students in this country are having litter boxes placed in classrooms and speaking through meows.
Exclusive: a 17 y/o Native American girl died suddenly at a troubled teen boarding school
Ex-staff say she'd been sick for weeks, was pale & bloated, and wasn't taken to a hospital
Records I obtained showed she vomited 3 x's in the week before her death

Scott Jensen, Republican nominee for Minnesota governor:
"Why do we have litter boxes in some of the school districts so kids can pee in them, because they identify as a furry?"
If NBC News had a scoop abt the biggest post-Cold War prisoner swap, not only would the top editors of int'l desks, investigations and politics be in the loop, so would news execs and our Standards & Legal depts. I don't get how the fault at Bloomberg lands on one reporter.
Brendan Shea, member of Ohio's State Board of Education: "We've literally got kids who think they're cats and dogs using litterboxes in classrooms"
(It's a widespread claim that has been repeatedly debunked across the country)

Too many reporters on the media beat think their job is to cover tweets rather than the systematic dismantling of local newspapers and glad handing between local TV news stations and police and businesses they cover
Hope you'll read the story to get the full context
And remember: this wasn't due to parents swarming school board meetings demanding LGBTQ materials be removed. It wasn't due to a new law.
This situation stems from a district decision.
Iowa govt's guidelines say those exposed to the virus for 15 consecutive min within 6 feet need to quarantine after exposure
So schools are literally having kids get up and move around the room every 12-14 minutes
i went into the archives and found out about the time far righters in the '60s went to war against a textbook that taught Black history. And wrote about how things haven't changed:
A South Carolina county GOP group is pushing the local library to ban any LGBTQ topics in the kids and teen sections.
The group also checked out a bunch of books with LGBTQ characters and is holding them hostage in the basement of their offices
@NBCNews
The school district held firm. The teachers did not return to their classrooms (they were reassigned).
Then LGBTQ students were pulled into meetings with HR officials, without parental permission, and asked about the GSA and the stickers
@NBCNews
Several teachers sent an email asking what's the deal, sent as a reply-all to a staff memo. Within two weeks, two of those teachers -- sponsors for the Gay Straight Alliance -- were pulled from the classroom
In response, hundreds of students walked out
@NBCNews
It all started with the principal of MacArthur High School ordering that small rainbow stickers, which teachers had posted to show they're an LGBTQ ally, be scrapped off of classroom doors. She says the district told her to do it.
But then teachers asked questions
@NBCNews
Students made pleas at school board meetings for the stickers return. They spoke with the principal and told her about anti-LGBTQ bullying. Nothing improved, they told me.
GSA faculty sponsors appealed to the school board, and were shut down.
A 14-year-old girl told school administrators she was sexually assaulted by multiple male classmates.
The school suspended her later that day for inappropriate behavior.
I examined 26 cases like this for
@The74
to figure out what the hell is going on
A high school kid posted a rap song comparing himself to El Chapo, and telling the listener “you can suck my dick.” His profile photo included a handgun.
He might go to prison for it.

NEW: Far-right activists w/ties to a Christian nationalist movement are pushing to recall a public library's trustees over LGBTQ books
But the library doesn't even have any of the books
Now the library director is quitting over the "extremism" she faced
NEW: I spent the weekend at the Moms For Liberty national summit, where activists were trained on vetting candidates, messaging and running for office -- in between speeches by Ron DeSantis, Betsy DeVos, Rick Scott and others
So where are things now?
School's GSA membership has dropped
Student newspaper isn't printing
1 teacher facing termination, another plans to quit, a third said she cannot talk about her employment status
LGBTQ students told me bullying continues
Ally stickers are still banned
i still haven't seen an argument, even in bad faith, about why we should not know the name of a person who boasts about getting random teachers fired, appears on one of the highest rated cable shows, and has the attention of prominent politicos
@NBCNews
So why are they so opposed to the stickers, which the GSA had handed out?
Well, listen to the school's lawyer in remarks from 3/21/22 - he accuses the GSA sponsors of wanting to break the law.
You can see how vehemently the GSA sponsors (seated) disagree with that
@NBCNews
The district opened HR probes in relation to these events, & concluded a GSA faculty sponsor had called the principal "homophobic," which she denies doing, & made colleagues uncomfortable sharing her opinion on LGBTQ issues.
Last month, they told her it planned to terminate her
Northwestern prof who once insulted Amanda Terkel's talent based on her voice is now accused of harassment by 10 women (And for the record,
@aterkel
is supremely talented and needs no advice from this dude!!)
The Rutgers student newspaper is about to lose its funding after a conservative student group led a campaign to defund it
The campaign seems to have started after the paper noted the group's posters were practically identical to a white supremacist org
@NBCNews
He labeled the stickers as part of a "personal agenda" by the teachers, but said that teachers can still support students who -- in his words -- are "gay, straight, LGBTQIA, question mark, plus"
(He declined to speak with me when I called him or answer questions in email)
@NBCNews
The district also declined to answer over a dozen specific questions I posed to them about this. Instead, they sent me a statement saying that the LGBTQ ally stickers could make some students feel unsafe
NEW: Ranches for troubled teens promised therapy & time with horses.
Two dozen sources say they were forced to perform manual labor and received bizarre punishments if they refused.
Today,
@NBCNews
published the results of my 6 month investigation ->🧵
NEW: In Des Moines, Iowa, a 27 y/o activist with no political experience ran on a platform of "defund the police" and decriminalizing weed -- she beat a two term incumbent by 10 points

NEW: Oklahoma's top education official is threatening to takeover or shut down Tulsa Public Schools
It started after a right-wing Tulsa board member was criticized for leading a prayer from the mic at a public HS graduation ceremony
Meet Ryan Walters...
Joe Rogan -- who a couple months ago thought it was true that kids in schools are using litter boxes -- spent 12 minutes talking about a tweet in a podcast episode
Turned out the tweet was fake. The supposed author of said fake tweet is now being harassed.
NEW: Facing anti-critical race theory protests, educators are resigning, and teachers are being punished over lessons about racial issues and over student projects that mention Black Lives Matter
@NBCNews
NEW:
We found 20 right wing candidates and elected officials who’ve publicly claimed this year schools are accommodating kids who identify as cats, letting them only talk in meows or installing litter boxes
It’s an obvious hoax, but they keep saying it
Due to a new law, Missouri schools have banned:
multiple books abt Holocaust;
X-Men, Fantastic Four & Batman graphic novels;
books abt history of comics;
an Annie Leibovitz book;
a Manga version of Hamlet;

& Orwell's 1984
NEW: A growing number of states are passing laws to offer money to every family to pay for private school
It comes after a group founded by Betsy DeVos poured $9 million into elections last year, backing nearly 200 candidates

NEW: Oklahoma state superintendent Ryan Walters pushed a new rule to stop 1 transgender teen from updating the gender on his private school records
That teen and his family are fighting back, and spoke to me in their first/only interview
@nbcnews
NEW: Conservatives have spent the past two years mobilizing around school boards.
National Dems have basically stayed out of it.
Now liberal-minded parents groups are springing up, trying to match the organizing by right wing groups.
Can they do it?
And after what happened last week, in which the local superintendent of the states largest district resigned under pressure from the state superintendent, Oklahoma Dems say it’s time to talk about impeachment
To better understand why they’re calling for impeachment, read my story from last week about what Oklahoma’s top education official has done in his first months in office
Many are appalled, but he maintains support among the conservative base
I’ve covered civil rights investigations conducted by the US Department of Education many times over the past 12 years. I’ve never seen a school make this argument challenging the constitutionality of the feds investigation
NEW: School officials in Southlake, Texas, are refusing to negotiate w/ the feds to resolve four student civil rights violations.
The district argues, in part, that the Supreme Court's overturning of Chevron limits the Education Department's power to enforce civil rights laws.

An increasing number of lawsuits over book bans are being filed, which seem to me like they're going to eventually set relevant legal precedent as parent activists continue pushing for restrictions on certain books
The authors of a picture book about a baby penguin with two dads filed a lawsuit in Florida, aiming to have access to the book restored in schools where it's been banned, and to have the state law declared unconstitutional.
