University bosses apologised for the fences, which they had committed to removing following the negative reaction, but the protest went ahead nonetheless.

Great news for UoM students as, following pressure from student action groups and the Manchester Students Union, the University of Manchester has agreed to waive rent for anyone who has not returned to uni halls until the end of the current restrictions.

President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell said: “I sincerely apologise for the concern and distress caused by the erecting of a fence around our Fallowfield Halls of Residence today. This was not our intention – in fact, quite the reverse."
S.A.F.E.R. Manchester have occupied the Owens Park Tower building in Fallowfield Halls of Residence. Moments ago they dropped a banner from the windows of the building. There is expected to be a protest tonight at 8pm in connection to their demands.
