Most people in the smash scene are at least vaguely aware of the hierarchy. Most aren’t content with their spot in it, and they use it as motivation to improve. There’s an abject level of non-inclusivity of people worse than you. You’re less likely to ask to play friendlies

Smash, in the beginning of Ultimate, was insanely bottom heavy. There were more new players than ever, as a result of many causes. Nintendo finally letting content be made on their games brought in many new fans from many places. The hype for the game grew to genuine motivation,

not just to play, but to join a scene, make friends, get better, and have fun. As you’ve noticed, post quarantine, that reality has completely flipped, and now we have less entrants than we could’ve ever expected for a game with this much reach.

People have noticed too, and the conversation of “How do we keep 0-2ers playing and competing” is more topical than ever. We realized they’re the life and blood of this scene, and keeping them around is irrefutably important. However, people haven’t been finding why they leave.

It varies vastly. New jobs, new circumstances, new schedules, but it goes the other way too. New players, interested and aware of tournaments, should theoretically also be changing circumstances. So the number shouldn’t have dipped this much.

What it always boils down to for people leaving, along with what I said before, is motivation. Motivation to go to tournaments, play the game, find new friends in the scene, improve, travel, etc. What causes the drop in motivation, is the thesis of this thread

So how do high level players kill the motivation of other people? Well, first, I’m gonna reiterate that you should probably pay attention to this. This is what gives you your weekly influx of cash, and if you don’t wanna see it continue to diminish, it’s better to hear me out.

with someone worse than you, because why would you? What could you possibly learn from someone with less experience than you? You’re less likely to follow them on media platforms, because why should you care about the opinions and perspectives of someone less knowledgeable?

This, consequently, leads to a lot less interaction with these people, if any at all. Unless it’s forced upon by them. In which case, if they’re corny (possibly due to lack of experience interacting with other players, or players with experience), they get clowned on.

Starving these players of the social interactions they’re seeking out BY GOING TO TOURNAMENTS, kills their motivation. Whether they tried a little at 1 or 2 events, or for a few years, enough becomes enough for different people at different times.

And no one is more at fault of adopting that mindset and doing those actions, than high level players. The reality of the scenario is that your ignorance is killing your wallet, and you aren’t a fan of it. You worked hard for what you earned, so think you deserve more,

but you don’t. You’re a person, just like every other in a given venue. You all live different lives, and no one is more important in a venue than anyone. However, due to some anomaly, high level player’s perspectives are warped by their success.
