The Load Sharing score introduced by MacCormack in 1994 assesses the degree of comminution, apposition & deformity of thoracolumbar fractures. In general if the LSS < 6 then a posterior short segment fusion is sufficient, otherwise reconstructing the anterior column is necessary.

Benzel biomechanics: Implants fail at the pt of max stress. Stress is M/Z. M is the applied moment & Z is strength determined by 3rd power of diameter. If D is uniform, pt of max stress is determined by pt of max M. If D is not uniform stress is influenced by rate of change of D
