New preprint available with @caleb_scharf on a rethink of habitable zones through the lens of computation. We study the universal limits of bioinformation processes, which may offer us new insights into biosignatures and enhance our search for diverse forms of life in the cosmos.
Thread on my new paper with @okw on a somewhat radical rethink of the notion of 'habitable zones' - through a new lens of "computational zones"...1/n

In history, games have been a driving force for the development of AI. They are the constricted channels of communication that bring about intelligence patterns emerge in agents.
I quite like the idea using games to evaluate LLMs against each other, instead of fixed evals. Playing against another intelligent entity self-balances and adapts difficulty, so each eval (/environment) is leveraged a lot more. There's some early attempts around. Exciting area.

Amazing feat – albeit of course nowhere close to large scale quantum computing yet, neither in Willow-105 nor China’s Tianyan-504! Just to be clear, error correction scaling is a long-term effort. And it started nearly 30 years ago, with leaps by Shor, Steane, and Preskill.
Quantum computers offer many promising applications dependent on greatly improved performance. Read how we’ve combined quantum error correction w/ our latest superconducting processor, Willow, exponentially reducing error rates w/ increasing qubit scale →
