The person handing out the masks in the photo is Ahmed Kargbo
@AhmedDeanKargbo
who is an Organizer at
@NYCImmigrants
. He's a proud SI resident and a Veteran. Today is his birthday!
The man who carried a gun and claimed to be a cop made a rant full of references to the anti-migrant crime narrative that the mayor and governor espoused for weeks abt the NYPD-instigated fight with asylum seekers in Times Sq. Those irresponsible and xenophobic words were heard.
If you are a candidate for City Council in 2021 and you don't support expanding/restoring the right to vote to all non-citizen New Yorkers (nearly 1.5 million) in NYC elections, I can't get behind you.
#OurCityOurVote
If we really want bold and transformative change, we have to be unapologetic about who & what we believe in. I'm supporting
@Dianne4NYC
because we need our next NYC Mayor to always center the most vulnerable and disproportionately underserved amongst us. TY for the

Queens is one of the few things keeping me going this morning. In four years, we built a progressive movement that turned out in this Election. (H/T to
@pikittakbo
for calling it.)
Vile. Horrid. There is NO justification.
FYI: To vend legally in a park you need a mobile food vending permit (only 5,100 available and a closed 10,000 waiting list). Then you must submit a competitive RFP or bid for one of only 400 Parks' permits. A system built to criminalize.
This is what fucking
@NYCParks
and NYPD are busy doing on a Sunday afternoon…trying to put a twelve year old child in cuffs who’s selling fruit with her family
I feel sick. If a staff member from
@NYCImmigrants
was fired for not doing construction work on a senior staff member’s home, that’s horrific and against the values of everything MOIA once stood for. This must be investigated and there must be accountability.
When New Yorkers defeat fascism on Tuesday, the story will be that the left literally saved

despite how they've spent so much time fighting the left and not Republicans.

Watched the heartbreaking video of the fight that led to the shooting of a fellow NY'er on the subway. I have so many thoughts and there's so much to say about gun control, mental health, real public safety, the racist carceral system. But I need to get one thing off my chest 🧵

@BernieSanders
has won the most votes in both states that have voted. He also leads Trump by the widest margin of ALL 2020 candidates. If you are still questioning Bernie's

I met
@Dianne4NYC
for the 1st time this weekend. Folks, she's the real deal!
It's so incredibly refreshing to hear a Mayoral candidate whose big ideas actually address the crisis we're in and not what's politically acceptable.
49 days to Election Day. Let's do this!

After earning my BA working full time, I never thought I'd go back & do it again. Taking classes & working against perpetual crises is no joke. Shout out to all who supported & encouraged me 🙏❤✊

New York City Council committee assignments and chairs.
There's a new subcommittee on COVID Recovery and Resiliency, chaired by Moya, and a special committee on the Twin Parks fire, chaired by Feliz.
If I lived in Astoria, LIC, Greenpoint, or StuyTown, I would definitely vote for Kristen Gonzalez
@Gonzalez4NY
for State Senate TOMORROW, August 23rd. Polls are open from 6am–9pm.
Today's vote is a litmus test for
@NYCCouncil
Members.
You say you support immigrant New Yorkers.
You say diversity is our greatest strength.
You say you support working people struggling to survive.

Columbus committed genocide and set the stage for the slave trade.
As someone with Italian (Sicilian) ancestry, I 100% support

Also, EVERY Columbus stature is an assertion of white supremacy and should be removed
I saw two delivery cyclists hit by reckless drivers tonight as I was biking home from work. Both within a mile of each other. This is an emergency--it's straight up deadly violence against New Yorkers.
Shout out to Ahmed Kargbo, Neighborhood Organizer at

The City of NY received NO verified reports of ICE raids today. Only reports of thousands of New Yorkers who know their rights and many more taking to the streets to demand that ICE be abolished.

So proud of the thousands of New Yorkers who came together despite the cold tonight to say

The gatekeepers of NYC politics-- consultants, party leaders, electeds, & pundits are much more conservative than folks trying to impact systemic change.
Remember, it's not you. They frame the mainstream political conversation so we're stuck debating basics like taxing the rich.
Too many recent articles on NYC's housing crisis are advancing a dangerous narrative.
Resisting Throggs Neck-style NIMBYism doesn't rationally mean an indiscriminate green lighting of all luxury developments impossibly unaffordable to NYers facing homelessness. It can mean...
Judge Forrest just ruled that Ravi Ragbir should have "the freedom to say goodbye" and he should be immediately released from ICE custody."

This might be *the first* interview where Mayor Adams was genuinely held accountable for fearmongering about crime, cuts to essential programs, 31 deaths on Rikers, & scapegoating of migrants.
EVERY New Yorker should watch

Respectfully, we can't vilify someone who committed genocide, heinous acts, & set the stage for the slave trade.
As someone w Sicilian heritage, it's insulting to honor this colonizer in my name.
It's not politically correct to be honest abt Columbus, it's historically correct.
NYC is officially the first city in America to pause for-hire vehicle licences and ensure a living wage for all Uber/Lyft drivers. Congratulations
@NYTWA

Another thing that’s bizarre about his narrative is “training” = malfeasance. Being trained on how to effectively and safely engage in nonviolent direct action is really important for everyone’s safety including the NYPD. Everyone from Rosa Parks to Cesar Chavez received training
First dose down. Didn’t feel a thing. I got vaccinated to keep my family, friends, community, and everyone I hand flyers to safe.

@WaluigiSoap
This inhumanity reminds me of Queens CB5 meetings when the city wanted to open a shelter in Maspeth, a community w zero shelter beds. These meetings are not productive, not real community engagement, and serve as an organizing tool for candidates to exploit bigotry & fear monger.
...rapidly building/investing in deeply affordable housing for low-income NYers (what NYC hasn’t done enough of), passing Good Cause Eviction, freezing rents, and long term investments in public and community solutions that move us away from a free market solutions to housing.
In 2013, when
@NYCCouncil
overrode Mayor Bloomberg’s veto of the Community Safety Act—it made history & helped define the conversation for the next decade. The Mayor & NYPD said the sky would fall but the Council refused to play politics with civil rights despite intense pressure
We have to do better.
@NYCCouncil
staff deserve a union. Most staffers don't just make near minimum wage, they actually make far less, spending their evenings and weekends at community events without overtime.
#UnionNow
Politicians who protest shelters in their districts NEVER do it because they are concerned about conditions for the unhoused.
It’s always to score points or save face. Even if it means punching down on the vulnerable.
It’s rooted in anti-blackness and classism and they know it
Yesterday after 16 years on a waitlist & $140,000 spent renting a permit on the underground market - our member Mohamed Bahieldin finally got the green light to apply for a Supervisory License & own his very own food cart permit 🎉
Second dose done. I didn’t think I’d get emotional but as I waited, I kept thinking about every friend and community member this virus stole. Much ❤️ to the healthcare workers, scientists, and every single essential worker who made today possible

I worked with Hassan for 7 years—through Trump's islamophobia, the pandemic, and the rise in Asian hate. I can't think of ANYONE who put the work before their own reputation more. The issue here was obviously that he didn't put Mayor Adams before his faith and the actual work.
ICE came to one building today where 100% of the residents refused to open their doors. They knew their rights. Please share resources, rally, and please DO NOT share unverified reports of raids.

As a Jackson Heights resident, I am completely against this. These vendors are community members doing survival work. The City has failed to fix the broken system capped the number of permits 40 years ago. Celebrating taking the bread out of these neighbor’s mouths is shameful

It never cease to amaze me how folks whose work isn't informed by direct experience or community work think they're more qualified than Organizers or folks rooted-in community to be at the table or make decisions.
I can't stress enough how important it is that we avoid using jargon, acronyms, or concepts that only mean something to people in our field.
This is true for outreach staff but really in every space where there might be someone who isn't fully on the same wavelength.
Can’t imagine having to co-chair an

It will never seize to amaze me how NYC government works so efficiently for developers and the rich. As a reminder, only 20% of Cash Assistance applications are processed on time per the Mayor's own numbers.

For February 13, Tibetan Independence Day, I’m sharing this gem I recently came across.
As a history lover, watching the effort to rewrite the history of Tibet’s independence is tragic.
Photo shows the Tibetan National Flag in a flag display in Queensland, Australia in 1939.
When I lived off 36th Ave in Dutch Kills/Astoria-area, our (very nice) landlord told me he wanted Amazon, BQX, and LIC-like high rises to be built nearby as it would help him since his property value would go up and he could raise rent with more high earners and amenities coming.
Emotional listening to Urgen Sherpa from
@ChhayaCDC
speak at the Rent Guidelines Board’s Queens meeting tonight. He helped thousands eat during the worst days of COVID, now the very same New Yorkers will be on the street. We can’t afford a 7% increase.
#MayorAdamsDontRaiseMyRent
Powerful: 400+ of our street vendors rallied in front of City Hall for the right to work without being criminalized. To be treated with dignity and not be strung along by the City any longer. Passing the
