We have a union, folks! 94% of us voted YES. Thanks to our supporters and to all Northeastern Grads. Solidarity forever!
Now let's go bargain a winning contract!

BREAKING NEWS: A majority of graduate workers at
Northeastern University have signed cards to support our union ✊
Our union is built by us, and we can use all the help we can get:
#Northeastern
#NEU
#Union
#Solidarity
Congrats! We got our first union-busting email after admin got word A MAJORITY of grad workers have signed cards! Universities keep using the same tactics (and anti-union law firms) but grad workers keep WINNING. And we plan on doing the same!
IT'S ABOUT DAMN TIME! After an 8 year battle with admin obstruction, Northeastern grad workers are finally having our union election! Come to the rally on Wednesday July 19th at noon in Centennial Common to celebrate and let
@Northeastern
know that we're ready to fight and WIN!
Today, we are filing an unfair labor practice (ULP) charge against
@Northeastern
alleging ILLEGAL retaliation against two of our union organizers, who are both members of marginalized communities.
BREAKING NEWS! It may be below zero in
#Boston
today, but we put on our kilts and beanies and marched with our ice coffee down to
@Northeastern
@PresidentAoun
's office to request a fair
#union
election. If that isn't
#MApoli
, we don't know what is ✊❄️
We want to acknowledge the murder of graduate student Jaahnavi Kandula at the hands of the Seattle PD in January of this year. She was a 23 year old international grad in Engineering at the
@Northeastern
Seattle campus. (1/3)
So which is it
@Northeastern
? Are we bargaining next, or are you going to continue to try and invalidate our union? Interesting that you will say one thing to the Boston community, and another to our campus community.
@BostonGlobe
@HuntNewsNU
Requesting contact information for workers is a standard part of the organizing process. We want to make sure we aren't excluding anyone from our unit.
@Northeastern
knows this, but they are fear-mongering because they know we have the support of our fellow workers ✊
Show up July 19th at NOON and show solidarity with student organizers retaliated against by their universities. Let's show the admins that whether it happens to
@UCSD_Unions_UAW
or to us here in Boston, students coast to coast will stand together and support their unions!
Solidarity to our fellow graduate workers
@hgsuuaw
as they fight for a democratic and just workplace! We’ll see you on the picket line

Universities work because we do! ✊✊✊✊✊
A special thank you to
@HOWLatNEU
. They have been a consistent ally and we are so grateful for their support. Raising awareness, providing resources, helping organize, & volunteering to observe our election. HOWL has done it all. We are stronger than ever in large part to you🫰
Tonight, the US Government is trying to deport a member of the NU community. GENU stands in solidarity with Shahab and encourages anyone in the Boston area to join the protest at Terminal E in solidarity. More info:
#LetShahabIn
#StopDeportingStudents
Grads like Alex laid the groundwork here on campus for a movement that's culminating next week with our election.
When we vote yes together we are doing it for Alex, ourselves, and the graduate employees of tomorrow.
That's what solidarity is all about.
.
@PresidentAoun
decides "a
#union
is not in the best interest of grad students at
@Northeastern
" and refuses an agreement for a fair election. This is a slap in the face to the majority of grads who know that a better university is possible
#weareworkers
Candidate for Boston City Councilor Joel Richards, speaking now!
"It's the same battle everytime... We're going to win this thing because we're in this together! You are right."

First Rally since filing? ✅ Thank you SO MUCH to all the grad workers, undergrads, staff, faculty, and community members who came out for our We Demand the Vote Rally!!!! We had amazing speakers, marched through ISEC, and delivered a letter to Aoun requesting a fair election.
The election is today! Polls are open in Robinson Quad!
We are voting YES together and will join the 100,000+ grads across the country who have affiliated with
@uaw
and won fair contracts, gained material benefits for their members, and fostered community on their campuses.
Yesterday, we called on
@Northeastern
to defend its own autonomy in reopening plans for the fall. This statement says Northeastern is going to do nothing beyond what it was already planning. It is the literal floor of possible responses.
Hold your horses,
@Northeastern
. 🤠 We hoped our Bingo game would last til the election. Throwing everything at the wall and hoping it sticks? Lucky for us it sticks as well as chalk on concrete. 👀
See our response to each of the school's (false) claims:
Our organizing committee stands in solidarity with UNC anti-racist activists, grad workers, and faculty on strike to protest the $5 million re-installation of Silent Sam. UNC admin's plan also includes an armed security force to further suppress campus activism.
#StrikeDownSam
Cambridge offers its “enthusiastic support of the
@nugradunion
and their effort to form a union!” They acknowledge
@Northeastern
's use of “disinformation”, and “campus police to illegally threaten false charges” as impetus for the City to call on NU "to bargain in good faith.”
Northeastern has OBSTRUCTED our vote, tried to strip ALL GRADUATE WORKERS of the right to unionize, put sensors under our desks WITHOUT CONSENT, and now, are ILLEGALLY using armed police to harass marginalized grad workers.
We are holding a RALLY this FRIDAY 4/14 on
Centennial Common at NOON!!
Come hang with the forbidden
#NEU
group that masters and PhDs everwhere are calling "the greatest example of graduate worker solidarity you'll ever find on campus" and find your newest friends 😻
Northeastern research and teaching assistants do powerfully important work and help keep the university running. I stand in solidarity with
@nugradunion
workers in their union organizing and fight to win a fair contract.
This is a pattern emerging from coast to coast. Just this past spring members of our own Organizing Committee at
@Northeastern
University were similarly targeted by
@northeasternpd
.
We offer solidarity to our fellow union members at
@UCSD_Unions_UAW
!!!
In an unconscionable move by the UC, University of California Police arrested 3 workers on felony charges and confiscated their possessions for writing messages in chalk and washable paint calling on UC to stop underpaying workers.🧵
Each organizer was approached at their desk by an armed NUPD officer, who tried to get them alone. It is ILLEGAL to retaliate against union organizing. Yet Northeastern called police against our marginalized organizers exclusively (others at similar actions were not threatened)
GENU-UAW calls on
@Northeastern
to cease all efforts to intimidate our organizers immediately. If you're a current grad student worker, show Northeastern that *WE* know what we need to thrive in our workplaces: sign our Vote Yes Petition.
Another Giving Day, another day
@Northeastern
has spent power-washing our labor organizing off of campus... 😩 See y'all at NOON on FRIDAY for our RALLY!
With "Giving Day" decorations still up,
@Northeastern
is back at it power-washing our rally announcements. Fred, one of our dining workers, ran into this scene: "I'm one of the workers who wants to get better pay"
HUGE VICTORY: After eight years of obstruction and union-busting from the university administration, the Graduate Employees of Northeastern University have won their union!
Welcome to the
#UAW
family 🎉🎉🎉
@nugradunion
@uawregion9a
There appears to be an extremely quick and free flow of our private information between NUPD and the university, and we do not trust that they won't use surveillance in other harmful ways.
Thankfully, WE are a (unofficial) union, so we can stand together against this retaliatory behavior. But we need recognition and a CONTRACT so we can have a real grievance procedure to deter and resolve retaliation quickly!
Thank you
@left_voice
for this incredible article about our rally on July 19th. Academic labor in Massachusetts stands in solidarity with our targeted organizers and the UCSD grads from
@uaw2865
#DropTheChargesUCSD
Since last summer,
@Northeastern
has been claiming students are clamoring for in person classes. Yet as cases rise rapidly on campus (23 new positives today, now over 900 total!), they are rolling out a marketing campaign to beg students to attend. So which is it??
"Don't miss the moments that matter" Northeastern is mounting a social media campaign to pressure its students to attend classes in person, during the worst part of the pandemic.
With many cases of police violence against minoritized people, it’s horrifying that our university would harass and intimidate BIPOC and trans grad workers rather than listen to us.
This "unions are for factory workers" mentality is pervasive in this country and in academia. It is flat wrong. Unions are for everybody. Workplace democracy is for everybody. Solidarity with the Kickstarter union and all workers struggling for control over their lives!

Boston City Councilor
@LydiaMEdwards
kicks off a press conference on this National Graduate Worker Day of Action speaking in support of our right to organize! Universities like
@Northeastern
must stop pretending they are powerless and hiding behind the Trump NLRB.
WE WON OUR UNION! The votes are in. By an incredible 93% margin, a vote of 1599 Yes to 122 No, USC Graduate Student Workers have voted resoundingly in favor of forming our union, GSWOC-UAW!
Koby from Harvard, "I know first hand we can win. Graduate workers across the country know their admins are failing. We will not stand oddly by and watch NU face this anti union campaign. Solidarity forever!"
Officer Kevin Dave hit her with a police cruiser at 74 mph, and his colleague Officer Daniel Auderer mocked her by stating that she had “limited value” and that the city could, “just write a check.” (2/3)
We are proud to take part in
@doesnucare
's day of action to
#ProtectThePackNU
. Many grad workers still don't know what their working conditions will be this Fall. We are all dealing with uncertainty about what will happen when there are clusters on campus. Seriously:
#DoesNUCare
?
Grad student organizers braved the heat outside of PhD orientation today! We met many new people and had frank conversations about the issues that affect us all — especially workplace abuse and harassment. See the leaflet and testimonials we collected
Northwestern University grad workers voted 1644 to 114 to join
@NorthwesternGW
(celebrating below) as the newest local of the totally independent badass
@ueunion
. Next up:
@TRUhopkins
is 1/30-30 and
@uchicagogsu
is 1/31 and 2/1.
Excellent turnout to the BU
#ProtestFromAnywhere
! Solidarity with workers and students at BU and everywhere standing up for health and safety at our schools, in our workplaces, and in our communities!
#OurRiskOurChoice
Councilor Willie Burnley Jr. , "What's disgusting? Union busting! What's outrageous? NU's outrageous! I'm here to struggle and celebrate with you all in this. I crossed the river to be here today because our residents say NU was not giving them the benefits they deserve."
The Trump NLRB is set to propose a rules change that would strip our right to organize. But we will not be deterred - we know that we are workers who don’t need to wait for any federal body to tell us we can organize - we ARE organized, we ARE the union, and we WILL win!
My dissent on student employees: As the Board has correctly found, student employees are workers, with workers’ interests and workers’ rights. There is no good basis – in law, in policy, or in fact – to take their rights away. 1/3
Today, we asked
@northeastern
trustees to do what
@presidentaoun
won't: choose grads over Trump and give us a fair union election. In response,
@northeastern
legal counsel tried to shut the event down. They’re scared trustees will listen to the majority of grads who want a union.
