Apple’s iMessage lock-in is a documented strategy. Using peer pressure and bullying as a way to sell products is disingenuous for a company that has humanity and equity as a core part of its marketing. The standards exist today to fix this.
It's clear why Apple is opposing interoperability. But people should be able to send high quality videos and photos to their mom without having to buy her a new phone.

"I don't hear our users asking that we put a lot of energy" into RCS, says Tim Cook in response to a question at Code. "I would love to convert you to an iPhone."
"I can't send my mom certain videos," says the questioner.
"Buy your mom an iPhone," says Tim.
We’re not asking Apple to make iMessage available on Android. We’re asking Apple to support the industry standard for modern messaging (RCS) in iMessage, just as they support the older SMS / MMS standards.
Wild to think about user experiences for phones that can connect to satellites. When we launched G1 in '08 it was a stretch to get 3G + Wifi working. Now we're designing for satellites. Cool! Excited to support our partners in enabling all of this in the next version of Android!
Intriguing idea

. BTW, I'm just wondering out loud here, and obviously this is such a crazy thought, super hypothetically...what if...what if there were Peppermint flavored

We built an OS, available to all for free, and it even supports multiple app stores. It’s strange that this suit attacks Android when it provides an unprecedented level of openness and choice. We think they got it wrong, and we’ll defend ourselves.
💚 Group chats don't need to break this way. There exists a Really Clear Solution. Here's an open invitation to the folks who can make this right: we are here to help. 💚💙
Everybody should have secure and modern messaging without worrying what kind of phone they’re texting to. So glad to see Apple joining our ongoing work with the GSMA on RCS to make texting better for all! 🙏
By not incorporating RCS, Apple is holding back the industry and holding back the user experience for not only Android users but also their own customers.
Wish list for the perfect pair of truly wireless buds:
✔️ Great sound quality, latest codecs
✔️ 10+ hours before needing a charge
✔️ A case that fits in tight pockets, USB-C
✔️ Sweat-proof for workouts
✔️ Intuitive, tactile buttons
✔️ Auto mutes when someone is talking to me
This from the company that claims to be the most open, with "the most choice." I hope this is just a developer preview thing, and the shipping version of Windows 11 lives up to their claims. This is far from "choice."
Microsoft is making it harder to switch default browsers in Windows 11. Alongside the new Widgets that ignore your default browser choice, Microsoft's browser competitors aren't happy. My report here:
Apologies to Podcast Addict fans today. We are still sorting out kinks in our process as we combat Covid misinformation, but this app should not have been removed. Carry on with your podcasts, folks! 🙇♂️

Supporting RCS would improve the experience for both iOS and Android users alike. That’s right, RCS will also improve the experience and privacy for iOS users.
SMS has evolved, and it’s better. You can see read receipts, typing indicators, better groups, secure 1:1 messages (groups coming soon) etc. That new standard is called RCS, and it’s available now.
I went into the office for the first time since early March (!) to record a quick appearance for an upcoming launch. Device hidden in pocket, sorry...

(Also, Bay Area folks, please stay safe from the fires.)
If you want to reach someone and you don’t know whether they use app x y or z, you have high confidence that sending them a text (SMS) will work. That’s because it’s a standard and supported by essentially all mobile devices. That’s probably why Apple supported SMS to begin with.
Today,

shared that developers around the world (excl. China) have earned more than $80 billion to date on

. Our platform can’t succeed without the help of our developer ecosystem, so a huge thank you for all you do!
Introducing a new standard isn't fast or easy, but this has truly been a milestone year for RCS. A heartfelt 🙏 to our partners and the 1 billion users who helped Google Messages with RCS get to this point.
Thanks to the more than 1 billion active users who have enabled RCS in Google Messages! To celebrate, we're introducing new features to Google Messages, including Photomoji. Excited to use one of my dog Jeffree:)
Disappointed in the Commission's decision, but humbled and thankful for all the support from our partners across app developers, OEMs and operators.Thank you.

Precisely! People have talked about "green bubbles" as an Android problem. There are hundreds of millions of people around the world already using RCS - encryption, uncompressed images and all. If you're an iPhone user, hopefully you'll be able to get these capabilities soon too.
.
@Apple
still has yet to adopt RCS as a messaging standard and is still defaulting to SMS/MMS. This is less secure, and causes images/videos to be compressed cross-platform. Looks like Android is raising awareness to this issue:

Happy 15th Birthday
@GoogleMaps
! Reflecting today on some of the ways it’s been helpful to me, from getting around more easily to finding a good veggie burrito wherever I am:) Thanks to the support of our users, Maps keeps getting more helpful every day.
This was a fun one to watch as I wrap up my week. A busy one for many Googlers. Thanks all for your interest. 🙏 (and thanks Googlers!).
So excited about the stuff we announced, AND the stuff still up our sleeves (or in our pockets 🤪).
At I/O, we announced more than 800M people are currently using RCS, and we expect to hit 1B by the end of the year. Adopting modern messaging standards helps bring us all closer together and improves user privacy.
We built an amazing experience for CES but this was the right call. You can't beat the Android ecosystem for choice and we've been hard at work creating some magical experiences across 📱⌚ 📺 🚗 💻🎧🔑. Lots of great news to share in 2022. Stay tuned!
Do you remember when you first started using Chrome? For those of you who joined us 15 years ago when we launched Chrome, thank you! 🎂 Check out some of the updates coming soon to Chrome as we celebrate 15 years.
"I'm not tired of Panos," Lockheimer said near the end of their first-ever joint interview, before Panay cut him off: "I'm very tired of Hiroshi."
That pretty much sums it up. 🤣

Today I'm excited to share that we're working with AT&T to accelerate adoption of the RCS standard, and that AT&T's default Android messaging will now be via the Jibe platform, so their users will get the latest RCS features instantly.
So, for the past few weeks I've had the opportunity to test the latest
