SICKENS me that landlords can put rent up by 20% and that's just "the market" but a wage increase of 10% is considered a greedy demand. The landlord class and the employing class are the same people and now they've normalised in-work poverty they wanna force us out of our homes
Jas Athwal MP is a landlord with FIFTEEN properties.
Complaints about toxic mould were ignored.
One of his tenants was threatened with eviction by an estate agent for complaining.
Athwal said he doesn't rent to people who receive benefits, which is unlawful.
He must resign.

We don’t need a repayment plan. We need rents to be suspended, rent debts to be cancelled and a permanent evictions ban.
Millions of renters are facing mounting arrears. Most have no savings to fall back on.

Today is the National Landlord Investment Show.
It's a real who's who of the biggest names cashing in on the housing crisis.
A short thread on what's going down today.
Spoiler alert: it's bad… 👀
Landlords don't provide housing. They hoard it and demand half our income for access to it.
Rents are too damn high. Dangerous disrepair is common. The housing system has already "broken down".
Homes should be controlled by the people living in them.
@EmmaKennedy
I’m a “private landlord” so are many of your friends. Anyone who has held on to a flat they had before a relationship is a private landlord, over 40% of UK homeowners have a share in an additional property. The entire UK housing system would break down without private landlords.
We've shut down NatWest in Stratford over their policy discriminating against renters on housing benefit! Customers are really supportive 😊
Renters claiming housing benefit need homes too 🏡

SHOCKING letter from an estate agent shows the truth behind the rental crisis.
Full admission that landlords and agents are knowingly preying on our desperation to artificially gauge rents and line their pockets.
There is no solution to the housing crisis without rent control.
We are increasingly seeing people like this 👇 use housing to stir up hate.
But migrants are among those MOST EXPLOITED by London's extortionate and unsafe private rental system. Most social renters are born in the UK.
We need more public housing available for EVERYONE.
To live on the Southbank in Central London, you'd pay £2,745 a month for a one-bed on average.
But immigrants in social housing, many of whom are unemployed, are paying ONLY £487 a month on average.
They are subsidised whilst you are extorted.
Not fair and must change.

The bailiffs have now left! We are still out defending a family of four in Walthamstow from eviction by a private landlord. Waltham Forest Council has failed to provide accommodation and threatens to move the family out of London.
THREAD (1/10)
This is appalling. And it's is why renters have to stick together and fight. Renters should have their right to organise legally protected.
The first step is to end no fault evictions - which are used to threaten tenants. The government promised this.
It needs to happen now.
💸Average rent in London is £2500.
💸Average monthly pay in London is £2100.
Many of us pay more than half of our incomes on housing and live in poverty while landlords make big profits on their assets. It’s not simply unaffordable, it’s exploitative.
We need rent controls NOW

Eviction resisted!! The bailiffs have now left ✊✊🏼✊🏾✊🏿
Dozens of neighbours & LRU members braved the cold in Abbey Wood to make sure the bailiffs, estate agents & their goons couldn't reach the door. George and Paul are safe in their home - because of renters getting organised
A single room in a shared house should not cost £1000 a month.
Imagine what our lives and our communities might look like if we weren't sinking half of our incomes into landlords' pockets.
We need rent control to bring the rents down!
LRU member Charlotte lost 80% of her income due to the pandemic.
She was asked by her landlord to take a personal loan to pay her rent. 😡😡😡
She withheld rent instead and prioritised her well being over her landlord's profit 👊

🌟SUCESSFUL EVICTION RESISTANCE⚡
A landlord planned to illegally evict several LRU members today. But we’re powerful when we’re organised.
Our resistance got the landlord to the negotiating table. We’ll hold them to the promises they’ve made.
Victory to the renters!

A London renter has been evicted from their home in Brent. The landlord changed the locks of the house this evening.

- asking landlords to be "compassionate" or "reasonable" doesn't work. Renters need real protections
Exciting stuff from Berlin - including:
🔸Five year rent freezes

Our rigged housing system has to change, and we can make it happen ✊🏾

Today we are out defending our member George and his partner Paul from eviction by a private landlord. Paul lost his job because of the pandemic, and they are now being forced out even though the government said “no one should lose their home as a result of coronavirus” 1/
The MAJORITY of landlords with NO MORTGAGE are still increasing rents.
The rental crisis is a greed crisis.
We need rent control to cut landlord profit.
"This is just an income stream for me... I've stopped working."
A landlord with no mortgages hiking rents just to keep up with what other other landlords are getting away with charging.
This is why we are taking action.
This is why we need rent caps.

🧵 THREAD
The issue with our housing system is NOT that some people pay £487.
The issue is that anyone is forced to pay £2,700 for a 1-bed flat.
Cause = privatisation & profiteering.
Only the super-rich win when ordinary people have to compete with each other for a decent place to live.
We are increasingly seeing people like this 👇 use housing to stir up hate.
But migrants are among those MOST EXPLOITED by London's extortionate and unsafe private rental system. Most social renters are born in the UK.
We need more public housing available for EVERYONE.
⚠️ Over a million renters are seeing landlords attempt to force through massive rent rises, some as high as 70%.
🧵 If this happens to you, here’s a what to do. A thread…
To the landlords yelling in our mentions: many renters forced to choose between food & rent - are you really suggesting they prioritise paying you over eating 🤯
Only 7% of landlords have offered tenants rent write offs. 4/5 tenants have landlords renting out multiple properties
Renters now have a six month eviction notice period.
It’s a huge step forward won by people power.
We need to keep pushing. The pandemic isn't our fault. Renters need protection from eviction and arrears.
We say: cancel the rent debt and make the eviction ban permanent.
🎉🎉🎉AMAZING🎉🎉🎉
Berliners just voted to take 240,000 properties off the city’s largest corporate landlords.
Huge congratulations to our friends in Germany. You smashed it!
This is what happens when renters get together and fight.
VERY exciting news everyone. The government is going to introduce open-ended tenancies and ABOLISH Section 21, the law that allows landlords to evict their tenants at a moment’s notice, leaving misery and homelessness in its wake.
#EndSection21
THRILLED to share that our member Mary has won £5,370 back from an agent that pressured the money out of her and refused to return it. A massive WIN after months of collective campaigning. 🥳👊💰💥

Here's our incredible organiser Ghazal explaining why on

You can join her here:
The London Renters Union is calling for nothing short of a moratorium on evictions & SUSPENSION of rent payments in this time.
We demand security in the homes of renters and workers in these unstable times.
Renters should not come out of this in DEBT to landlords either.
Landlord just wrote to us saying they are increasing our rent by 20% at the end of the tenancy. As such I'm going to likely be forced to move for the second time this year.
Would the Labour government kindly do something so that private renters aren't living in hell?
Earlier the government told media it had 'extended the eviction ban'.
The details are out and in fact this is a LIE.
@RobertJenrick
has given the go ahead to evictions of large numbers of people in rent debt starting Monday. Just as Covid deaths reach a new high.

As it stands courts remain open for eviction cases.
Ministers have asked bailiffs not to enforce evictions. But this is non-binding guidance that landlords will fight in court.

London has the poorest quality housing in the UK.
Londoners also pay the highest rents.
This is the inevitable result of a housing system run by and for landlords.
It doesn't have to be this way. We must build a housing system for people, not profit.
There's nothing "harmonious" about a housing system that hands valuable assets to a small group of people while forcing the rest of us to pay extortionate rents and live with a lifetime of insecurity.
Had to increase tenants rent by £275per month. I think tenants are starting to understand and empathise with landlords due to interest rates hikes.
It’s Better when landlords & tenants work harmoniously 🤝🏾

So-called "affordable" renting schemes are denying people housing who earn less than £36,000 a year.
That's more than the average UK salary!
We need council homes, not rip-off rents dressed up as "affordable."
40% of the council homes sold through Thatcher’s right to buy are now rented out by landlords.
Extending right to buy to housing associations will drive up rents & leave many more of us trapped in private rented housing.
We need more not less social housing and rent controls.
Mortgage payments suspended, but renters get nothing!

Berkeley is one of the developers Labour says can fix the housing crisis.
Its properties go for £650k+, 15x the average London salary.
In 2018, Berkeley was found to have reduced social/ affordable housing quotas in 93% of London developments.
These are not the homes we need.
Rising rents means the UK now has the highest rate of homelessness in the developed world.
But the major political parties aren't offering anything that would bring rents down.
No matter who forms the next gov, renters will continue to organise & fight for rent control.
We're here in E11 to stop an illegal eviction.
Since the start of the pandemic more and more landlords are resorting to illegal eviction.
