Having had the weekend to reflect on the wealth of info from oral witnesses last week for my Private Members' Bill on Choice at the End of Life, I keep coming back to five things that really stuck with me 🧵 #AssistedDying 1/7.

Pleased to see the shift to prevention and early intervention as part of our #PlanForChange. Increasing public health grants funding will tackle the root causes of ill health and build stronger, healthier communities nationwide.

The committee looking at my Terminally Ill Adults Bill will begin line-by-line scrutiny next week. This is vital to ensure it is as strong, safe & practical as possible. This week I have tabled amendments with input from the Government that do just that.

I have proposed a new requirement that in their first discussion with a patient, doctors cannot discuss assisted dying in isolation. It must be alongside other treatment options, including palliative care, symptom management and psychological support.

I look forward to discussing these proposals & further amendments to strengthen the Bill in the coming weeks. I welcome the scrutiny this stage provides. It means we can craft the safest, fairest Bill possible that addresses the injustices of the law as it stands.

Having had the weekend to reflect on the wealth of info from oral witnesses last week for my Private Members' Bill on Choice at the End of Life, I keep coming back to five things that really stuck with me 🧵 #AssistedDying 1/7.

This bill is motivated by a non-partisan recognition that the status quo is untenable for dying people and their families who are currently abandoned in a system that protects no one. 6/7

This stage of the process is for scrutiny, analysis & consideration of the evidence, so all witnesses were selected for their expertise. Together, we can deliver a Bill back to the Commons that protects the vulnerable and gives dying people a true choice at the end of life. 7/7.
