🧵1/ It's been another eventful year in Taiwan politics. As 2023 draws to a close, here's a recap of the most notable events that
@WSJ
covered in Taiwan.
The Taiwanese internet is going "pink" today––an unofficial campaign to break gender stereotypes––following a tale about a boy who refused to wear a pink mask to school for fear of being bullied

This evening in Taipei, 300+ people wearing in black & chanting words—which are now banned in Hong Kong—turned out for a human-chain rally in solidarity with the city, marking one year after a key protest day that ended with cops beating people inside subway trains
Yes, we voted.

This guy, a first-time voter, took the first flight of today flying in from Hong Kong. He said his plane was full of Taiwanese people on board.
As of 9:15 am Sunday, the line waiting to vote outside a polling station in Fortress Hill has stretched for more than 300 meters. It’s so long that I couldn’t even capture the whole queue in this time-lapse video.

Happening now in Taipei: a few hundred protesters are gathering outside Taiwan’s legislative buildings after brawls erupted at the legislature on Friday over controversial bills
OK. Here's a second batch: Note that it's not only government agencies but brands, NGOs and cultural groups are also supporting the cause in this "pink wave" across Taiwan

With the legislative meeting for the controversial bills postponed to next week because it’s past midnight, DPP lawmakers came out to rally their supporters, chanting “Team Taiwan, Team Democracy.”
“I am even more convinced that China can’t be trusted after seeing what happened in Hong Kong.” A march in Taipei drew what organizers said were 100,000 people into the streets in solidarity with Hong Kong, which has endured 17 weeks of unrest.
🇹🇼🗳: "My role in DC has always been a very delicate balance," said
