The visit to Berlin taught me how important it is for communities, institutions, and countries to face their history with humility. There are countless reasons to go to museums, libraries, and movie theaters, but the experience of collective reckoning is one of my favorites.

After visiting a dozen Holocaust Museums/Memorials in at least five countries, I still can't shake The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe (Germany doesn't beat around the bush). In the U.S., we tend to emphasize individual reckoning with the past over the collective.
