"Being with Neal was like playing music. You know what I mean? He would, like, throw out a lick, and, you know, I would dig it. It was like that kind of thing. It was like playing music. And you appreciate someone who was so, you know, in time. It’s hard to describe. I mean, it hasn’t been described so far. It hasn’t been said. – Garcia Remembering the one and only Neal Cassady, who would have turned 99 today. Celebrate Neal with the @GratefulDead’s Valentine’s Day show from 1968 at the Carousel Ballroom in San Francisco. Broadcast on KMPX, this show is forever linked to Neal, with Garcia dedicating the second set to him just 10 days after his passing. Listen here: 📷 Herb Greene / 🖼 Stanley Mouse

“Where the best Dead studio records feel like cozy, reined-in presentations of their best songs, Garcia is in its own class entirely. For one thing, Jerry clearly approached the record without thinking how it would hang together in a live set. Instead, each song is ornamented as its own set piece, building to a larger, heavenly atmosphere that owes more to art-rock than to the era’s post-hippie glow. Harkening back to the Dead’s playful beginnings as the house band at Ken Kesey’s Acid Tests in San Francisco, he incorporates sound collage and tape manipulation. There are false starts, recurring motifs, songs that segue into one another without pause. As it turns out, Garcia goofing around in the studio felt a lot like most other artists trying to craft their masterpiece.” As part of their Sunday series, @pitchfork takes an in-depth look at significant albums from the past. Check out their fresh perspective on Jerry's debut solo album, Garcia.

All along my old pal Jerry used to say, "You get some, you give some back." 🌹 @BobWeir
“The Grateful Dead has always been more than just music. It’s about the people who believed in it.” – Mickey Hart This year, we recognized the @gratefuldead’s @BobWeir, @mickeyhart, @phillesh, @jerrygarcia and @BKreutzmann as our #PersonsoftheYear honorees for their amazing philanthropy and musical legacy. Mickey and Bobby accepted the honor along with family members of Jerry, Phil, and Bill, and spoke on the importance of community in music. It was a truly impactful night of music and raising funds for music professionals in need, including those affected by the fires in the Greater LA area. “My old pal Jerry used to say, ‘you get some, you give some back.’ And so we did.” – Bobby Weir
